The town of Quartzsite is filled with conspiracy theories. Among them are that people who know too much about Town Hall's historical corruption, normally end up threatened, jailed or even dead. The film's director, Cyle O'Donnell, was almost killed in front of the Chamber of Commerce building while still in production, when a vehicle pulled out in front of his motorcycle. The Chamber's president was standing in witness to the event as it happened, and even captured the event in a picture. In a podcast later released of the show, Shanana "Rain" Goldenbear, the president of the Chamber and the editor of a local tabloid publication, threatened to sue O'Donnell, claiming that he was infringing on her lesbian partner's political affairs by releasing the documentary that criticized the town government. The president's partner, Starr Bearcat, was a council member at the time. The release of the film revealed the connection between Rain, who manages a non-profit that is legally bound to be non-political in nature, and her partner, who allegedly votes on political affairs that have a direct impact on that non-profit. Witness reports throughout the production also claimed that Starr Bearcat ran, reported for, or was at least the photographer for Rain's tabloid.
