Hold back your snickers, people. Nothing about this next story is supposed to be funny. Word on the street is that Kevin Costner is in negotiations to star in a new Kazakhstani film. The still untitled picture is an epic, historical drama following the foundation of the Asian state and its numerous altercations with the dreaded Mongols. No, Borat Sagdiyev will not be involved, though acclaimed filmmaker Akan Satayev is. You probably don.t know him, but his newest effort Strayed is getting quite a bit of buzz. According to The Playlist, no third parties have confirmed Costner.s potentially involvement; so, as of now, it should be treated as nothing more than wishful thinking. When Martin Scorsese lets you know someone is going to be involved in his next film, you write a news story on it. When random Kazakh filmmakers tell you the same, you overtly advise readers...

Briefly: Akan Satayev directed Kazakhstan's official foreign language Oscar entry Strayed, which is a film that most of us haven't had a chance to see, but sounds like an appealing picture for those with an arthouse/indie bent. (It's about a man stuck on a remote road with his family; after his wife and daughter disappear, the man enoucnters another strange family unit, and things start to get weird.) Now Akan Satayev might make a very different sort of film. He told The Playlist [1] "we are in pre-production for the new movie, a historical epic drama,” for which he is in talks with Kevin Costner to appear. The film will revolve around events that led to the formation of Kazakhstan and conflicts with Mongols in the 18th century. The film would be shot in Kazakhstan, and at this point we don't know what Kevin Costner might play. Sounds like a...

Kazakhstan's submission to the Foreign Language Oscar race, Akan Satayev's Strayed is a spartan yet strangely compelling trip into one man's personal hell.
Andrey Merzlikin - you know him from Bimmer and Newsmakers - stars as a man who seems to have it all. A beautiful wife. A young son. Enough money to buy an expensive car. But when that car breaks down and strands the three of them in the middle of the vast, desolate steppes, we quickly learn how thin the veneer of success really is. The trio spend the night in the car and when he wakes up Merzlikin's un-named lead character discovers he is alone, his family having disappeared in the night. And now he must find both his family and a way to get them all safely home. But all he can find is a very peculiar father-daughter duo living alone in a small...

While I do not think that something as edgy or unusual as Giorgos Lanthimos' Dogtooth (pictured above) will make the 'final five' short list, but kudos to Greece for throwing it out there. Perhaps something like Tetsuya Nakashima's Confessions will make the cut despite its similarly unsettling subject matter. Either way, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did put out a big release yesterday with all of their Foreign Language film submissions, 65 of them in total even Greenland, from various countries. Many of these films have reviews in our archives.

I have been keeping track of all of the Foreign Language Oscar submissions in my "The Contenders" section of the site and today the official list of sixty-five films from sixty-five countries was unveiled by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration for the 83rd Academy Awards. On January 20, 2011 a shortlist of nine contenders will be announced prior to the naming of the nominees on January 25, 2011.
I have included the complete list directly below, which includes first-time entrants Ethiopia and Greenland. The only film that was originally thought to be under consideration, but didn't show up on the Academy's final list was Afghanistan's entry, Black Tulip, directed by Sonia Nassery Cole. IMDb doesn't list a release date for the film, which means it may not have met the release requirements in time.
I have linked each film to their corresponding IMDb page for those films not included...

Though Russia is by far the most prolific of the former Soviet Union states when it comes to film production it would be a major mistake to overlook other territories in the region as many parts of the Soviet bloc are increasingly ramping up film production. The Ukraine is very much in the game and, increasingly, so is Kazakhstan.
