- Three Grams of a Dream takes place in a small rural village in southeastern China and introduces us to Ben, a 6 year old boy who has no material wealth but big dreams.
Ben lives with his mother and grandfather in Fujian Province. Ben and his friend Zhou Qi watch a table tennis (ping pong) competition on a communal village TV, and Ben's dreams begin. Playing ping pong is in Ben's heart, but he cannot bring himself to ask his poor mother for money to buy the balls and rackets.
Ben's dream of wanting to play ping pong is shared by many children in China. Audiences are moved as we watch Ben find a way to realize his dreams.
In order to make his dream come true...
Ben struggles between his family relationships and his own honesty, as he has to use unusual initiative and work hard to find a way to purchase the ping pong ball, and make his own paddles, net and table from old farm wood.
Upon achieving his goal, tragedy strikes as the Sichuan Earthquake occurs. Chinese citizens are asked to donate, however Ben, caught between the desire to do what feels right, and what he can afford, decides that his only choice, is to give up the one thing that he truly loves.
Ben shows us that once we make the right decision no matter how much it hurts, we will find our reward. We can all be role models.
The film teaches us if we stick to our hopes and goals our dreams can be achieved. Many children don't understand the value of love or family, nor compassion. Many children today are compared to their peers by their own material wealth... they are often given what they demand and show no appreciation or understanding of value. The hope is that this film will both educate and move audiences to a closer understanding of the true value of family love and of the human spirit - something that unites the world, not just China.
