Toronto -- Arrow Entertainment has acquired the international distribution rights outside North America for the Hugh Hefner biopic "Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel" from Canadian director Brigitte Berman.
Phase 4 Films earlier picked up the U.S. rights to the Canadian documentary, and Kinosmith grabbed the Canadian rights.
The twin distributors plan a simultaneous July 23 North American release for the film, which bowed at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall.
The documentary portrays Hefner in early civil rights battles, including breaking the color line in his Playboy clubs and TV shows, after launching his popular men's magazine.
Toronto-based Arrow is shopping the Hefner biopic to foreign buyers in Cannes.
