King George III, blue urine, and porphyria. It is true that: George was quite, quite mad; records from that time mention his blue urine; blue urine is a sign of porphyria. However, G3 was taking heavy doses of a gentian extract which would certainly have given him blue urine. Records of his behavior and signs & symptoms do not resemble porphyria but do closely match bipolar disorder.
