It's a good movie with a great story
filipppl29 February 2012
In the opening scene we see a wall that is being torn down by some soldiers manually, brick by brick. As the light begins to get into a room we see a man with cigar who seems to be waiting for something. Then his brought to a burned house where soldiers have moved in. With disappearance of one of the soldiers, Sivi (Grey),unexpected things begin to occur.

This movie isn't best Serbian movie, it isn't great movie, it even isn't best Dejan Zecevic's movie, but it is a good movie. Acting is very good and scenery really reflects the movie's gloomy atmosphere. What I really loved about this film is a story. If you're looking for a fright you won't get them here, but if you want to watch a good thriller, this movie will give you some chills and get you thinking.

All in all, I recommend this movie for everyone who loves well made thriller with good written story.

For a squad of soldiers who have managed to survived a bleak civil war, things are about to get worse...
Jono_Moffat5 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Synopsis: One week after the signing of the Dayton Agreement, a small squad of soldiers from the Army of Republika Srpska are, under UN supervision, clearing a rural area of land mines they themselves laid. It's long, painstaking work that leaves no room for error. After a (not so civil) war lasting over three years, these men are exhausted, scared, and scarred - each one haunted by his experiences, psychologically and physically beaten nearly to submission. Every movement is a chore, every thought and every word adding to the weight upon their shoulders, and each man desperate to go home, to a place that no longer exists for them, and each still painfully aware that, despite the fine words of the deal-makers, the shadow of the war, not to mention the danger of their current task, could still see them listed as casualties of war.

Could things get any worse?

Yes they can.

A routine patrol uncovers an enigma. A civilian outcast - Daba the Lame (a magnificently sinister Tihomir Stanic) - a chain-smoking simpleton with a gift for saying the words that will get under people's skin. Is he but a simple man, released (or escaped) from a mental institution? If so, why was he walled-up in a room? Or, of course, he could be the very devil himself...

Neprijatelj is a thought-provoking Serbian psychological thriller written by Djordje Milosavljevic, and directed by Dejan Zecevic. It's a grim, and tragic tale of friendship, camaraderie, and, ultimately, enmity - produced from the ashes and the deep, deep scars of a country which, I'm sure, is still coming to terms with the horrors of the war which racked it some 20 years ago.

This film, though focusing on a band of Serbian soldiers remains above picking sides, or advocating one version of history over another. Instead, Neprijatelj focuses on the damage done to those who participate, both physical and psychological, and shows how finely balanced is the modicum of control the individual has when balanced on the razor sharp edge of war, where any wrong move will rip them apart. The ambiguity of the true nature of Daba is a key element of the plot. Almost every action he makes, or the consequences he creates, could as equally be supernatural in origin, as they could mundane.

The film is stark - it's washed out colours, a palette of greys, browns and greens, make it seem almost monochrome. Everything we see, the land, the buildings, and the beliefs of the men themselves, is burnt out, broken, and beyond repair. It's carefully crafted characters, and well written script allows us to know these men, and like them (for the most part) - every word, every gesture, helps to build the picture of the hell these men have (so far...) lived through. We know that bad things are coming (it's something of a horror film, after all), and when they oh so inevitably do, it affects us - these men are not heroes, they not trying to be heroes. What they're trying to be (with a couple of exceptions) are survivors.

Exactly who neprijatelj - the enemy - is, is perhaps the central question of the film, and it is one that has many answers. Is it the (possibly) malevolent Daba? The unseen Bosniak forces (represented, perhaps, by the unseen, yet agonisingly present land mines that surround our protagonists)? The war? Or even the squad itself? Any one of these has merit as the answer, and, perhaps there is more than one enemy at hand.

And what of Daba? Is he truly the devil? If so, what sins have these soldiers committed that has cursed them to his personal diabolical attentions? Or is Daba - who uses nothing but his words to cause violence, chaos, and suffering - more representative of those who urge their followers into the war, by finding enemies who must be destroyed at all costs, lest they 'destroy you and all you hold dear'? Those who manipulate, through fear, blame, and hatred, 'normal' people into situations and acts of great suffering?

Or is he, perhaps, just a simple man, unwittingly become an avatar for suspicions and hatreds of wounded, hurting soldiers?

Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Maybe it's much more straightforward.

Maybe Neprijatelj is the simple tale of simple soldiers against an adversary (or THE adversary!), but, even if not intentional, I can't help feeling that this film is filled with more subtle commentary and questions. We know these men. We've met these men. We may even be these men. Can we truly believe that we would not end up the same in such circumstances? War brings out the worst in humanity, yet sometimes it seems a necessary evil, but is there truly any such thing? Are we ultimately damned by our actions, even when the intentions are meant to be good? The road to hell is paved... and all that.

Neprijatelj is a good film. Its pace is slow, and it takes a while to get going. This will no doubt put off some, but at the same time it's unsettling, if not outright scary, with a mounting sense of dread and unease. There are, however, a few predictable plot points, and a couple of standard set pieces, and stock character devices that I felt were unnecessary - these, though, are few, and easily forgivable.

But Neprijatelj has a secret weapon up its sleeve. An incredible performance by Tihomir Stanic as the possibly diabolical Daba - one of the best movie Devils I've ever seen. This devil, true or imagined, is perhaps more like his biblical counterpart than many others. He corrupts, not by deeds or violence, but by word, and thought, and he seems to be having a devilishly good time whilst doing it.

7/10 - solid, if not spectacular, but thought provoking nonetheless.

Tense and symbolic exploration of human nature and beliefs
TomLucius27 January 2022
Set in first days of truce of Bosnian war, movie follows group of Bosnian Serbs Army who encounter a strange man locked behind the wall in abandoned factory. Soon after they release him, a member of Bosnian army informs them that they made a terrible mistake and that they set Satan himself free. Soon after, problems and conflicts between them start to arise.

Set in winter, with its black and white photography, slow pace film successfully creates a true thriller movie atmosphere.

Strongest part of the movie is story and directing. While being interesting, captivating, tense and symbolic, film explores human nature among the people in state of war, conflict, fear and desire to be safe in the never ending debate: What is source of evil deeds: A human nature or gods and demons?

Acting is generally good, with three main actors portraying Cole (Aleksandar Stojkovic), Caki (Vuk Kostic) and Daba (Tihomir Stanic) being the best ones. Their portrayal made their characters really layered and well rounded. However, some other characters have moments when they appear a bit sloppy, sometime it's a fault of an actor and sometime it's a fault of weaker script. Even though a story is really good, script is weakest point of the film, especially dialogues which sometime come out as forced and artificial. But dialogues are weakest points of many other Balkan movies.

In conclusion: I recommend this film to everyone who likes to watch tense and thriller movie with such interesting themes like human nature and their beliefs.

peace as war
Vincentiu1 May 2014
gray, powerful, slow. a film about ashes of war. about the traces of memories and need to escape from yourself. a bitter exercise of reconciliation with the past. it is not the only from ex-Yugoslav cinema but it is meritorious for the science to present the realities of a world in change. that does it not only an admirable movie but a profound , touching testimony. not only about post-war Bosnia but for the way of survive in East. it is a film who must see it not for individual experiences or for the acting. but for a more clear image about a period and for to define existence not exactly as adventure or passing. and, sure, the basic motif - it could not be an American heroic blockbuster.

Portent Drama . But Is It Horror
Theo Robertson11 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The Dayton Peace Accord brings the Bosnian civil war to an end and a unit of Bosnian Serbs find a Serb civilian in a nearby factory . From then on strange things start happening I haven't seen too many Bosnian war films from the Blakans but the ones I've seen such as NO MAN'S LAND and PRETTY VILLAGE PRETTY FLAMES would seem more at home on the theatre stage rather than a cinema screen . By this I mean the location is static and the story is dialogue heavy and there is a small cast list . This slightly bizarre film by Dejan Zecevic is no different

In many ways THE ENEMY is similar to the 2001 British film THE BUNKER except for one important difference and that is THE BUNKER is a confirmed supernatural film where as THE ENEMY isn't . In truth this movie is a film that is entirely open to interpretation . Is the man the Chetniks find really an agent of either God or Satan ? Or is the mindset of the Chetniks something that leads to self fulfilling prophecy ?

One problem this leads to from a cinematic point of view is that not much happens . I do remember my problem with THE BUNKER is that low brow horror would have been preferable to the psychological chills suggested and this problem is reinforced with this film . The story doesn't actually get going in to the final third which makes for a rather mundane film which is a shame since the director and cinematographer bring a gloomy mis-en-scene to the movie but don't make the most of it

I suppose one positive that can be taken from THE ENEMY is that of the five previous comments on this page two are from Croatia and two from Serbia and they're all unanimous in enjoying this film which makes me optimistic that there is hope in the world

Armospheric and captivating
jonga-629-72243410 March 2013
After reading the positive reviews from both Croatian and Serbian side I had to see this movie. This is not a horror film for the lovers of lots of blood and chopped of heads although there are plenty of corpses at the end. What I found captivating is the atmosphere of malice and distrust that slowly builds up. Also the post-war world of destroyed buildings and believes is well captured. The actors play soldiers as if they fought in a war yesterday (did they?). The change of a group of guys who trust each other and laugh with each other into distrust is beautifully done. This slowly growing mistrust is the real enemy from the title, and this is obviously done by people who know what is about. I highly recommend this film. It is a real shame it did not get wider distribution.

Amazing surprise
igor-saric8 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I was reluctant to watch this movie, fearing low cost production and with mostly unfamiliar actors - low grade acting. Boy was I wrong. This is a horror movie without any super special creature effects. It relies upon great story, acting, camera work and atmosphere. You can't tell who is kidding who and what the truth is - even in the very end. It is by far one of the best movies, and believe me - I watch 1 or 2 of them each day; US or international. If you like good psychological horror - this gets a thumbs up for must see!

I certainly hope to get this on DVD or Blue-ray; if someone finds out where to get it - PM me please. So lean back, turn on your plasma and enjoy the show :)

Amazing!
arminio24 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Fantastic film! So simple but so effective... Atmosphere and mystery around the main character and all insanity that his presence actually only emphasize, are shown in so simple but so effective way that this is a must see for all who wants to learn how to produce great film with minimalistic approach. Acting here is superb and actor who portraits "demon"/"god" is simple amazing. Zecevic manage to mess up minds of his characters and audience by mixing horror, mystery, drama and nonsense of war.

Together with "Zivi i mrtvi" (aka "The living and the dead") which has similar surreal anti-war story and equally great realisation and "Idi i smotri" this is the third best anti-war movie I've seen so far.

I can not bread
katjaivanovna25 February 2012
This movie, this is an amazing story of essence of life, present ending of human evolution and Introduction to the end of the world as we know. This is not just a war movie, or local story. This is an universal story of the end of the human race. We have released the Evel and we are done on this planet. Not to mention excellent cast, actors who are brilliant in a specific and for some, completely new roles, and scene, Scenography, light, environment, camera... the overall atmosphere... Sound and ... all !!! The quality of acting was amazing. Transformation of characters and impressions of symbols... My God, this is an excellent Movie! I was breathless during the entire projection. The movie has not only psychological, but physical impact on me as a simple viewer.

I salute Mr. Zecevic and the cast! Brilliant!

too negative
NijazBaBs31 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is too negative and subjective. Meaning, looks like this is more about believe in some Satan or Devil rather than about war. No any solution nor end. Also location is very limited, static, and talk dominates. Not what I hoped for. The best part is presence of IFOR in beginning which reminds me or real war state as it was. But since then things are just worse and worse. Bit funny talk, but still almost only talk. Bit of weapons, fights but between same nation and friends, and based on desperation. Looks like this is psychological, about negativity of our minds, perhaps caused by war environment. I expected more to happen with that devil but even that is shallow, nothing happening. No depth nor convincing.

10 out of 10 - not easily given from me!
ujka_miljan29 February 2012
The Hard Truth - that I would call it... Real truth of life. There's a bit of Devil and a bit of God in everyone of us. Watch it - think of the real Enemy. The only movie in the last ten years for which I am sorry that I have not watched on the big cinema screen!!! Spooky, mind blowing, horror and a thriller, with a little bit of psychological drama - just not to take viewers for granted. Zecevic gives us first-class blockbuster. What is the meaning of life? Do we exist? How does God look like? What is the Devil? Is there a God? And all that happens around a small group of Serbian military de-miners working on fresh minefield in the center of an even more fresher PEACE :)
