Jed Shepherd, the writer of Shudder sensation Host as well as Rob Savage’s follow-up Dashcam, sat in the director’s chair for Flashback, a new horror short coming to Netflix.
“I’m very excited to announce Flashback, which I wrote/directed for Netflix,” Shepherd tweets this week. “It stars some of the loveliest people I know and is out This Friday, October 20.”
Shepherd has also shared a teaser trailer for Flashback, which stars Jemma Moore (Host) as a yoga teacher. Set in South London, the short features “time travel and monsters.”
Of particular note, Fangoria brings us the word that mega popular artist Trevor Henderson (Mayfair Watcher’s Society) worked with Shepherd on the short’s monster design!
In Flashback, “a yoga teacher’s life flashes before her eyes during a home invasion. Before time runs out she must use the flashback to race back in time and save the man she loves.

Rob Savage makes scary movies.
After smashing his way into the horror scene with the pandemic chiller "Host" and the divisive horror comedy "Dashcam," Savage made his first major studio movie earlier this year with "The Boogeyman," an adaptation of the Stephen King story of the same name. And while it was a sleeper hit at the box office, the most exciting aspect of the film was that it proved Savage could take on a much bigger movie without losing his edge. This is a frightening film, one coated in dread and literal darkness, with a story just as interested in its shattered characters as its unsettling monster. Some horror directors abandon their spark when they work on a bigger, more expensive studio project. It looks like Savage thrives.

Rob Savage feels "amazed" that 'The Boogeyman' was awarded PG-13 status. The director has confessed to being surprised that the supernatural horror film wasn't given a stricter content rating. He told Bloody-Disgusting.com: "We ended up pushing in this weird Lovecraftian body horror place that I’m still amazed we got away with in a PG-13 movie. "But that was our attempt. It was our attempt to honour the story, which ends with some skin-peeling grizzlies; and hint at this cosmic horror beyond what we see on screen."Rob also confessed that 'The Boogeyman' was unlike any of his previous projects. The filmmaker - whose previous film credits include 'Host' and 'Dashcam' - explained: "The parts that I was really having to learn on the job, it was more towards the end of the movie, the action-horror beats."I’d never done anything with,...

Filmmaker Rob Savage is one of the most exciting eyes working in the horror genre today. In 2020, Host became an overnight hit for found footage horror. Last year’s Dashcam took everyone on a ride into the lowest bowels of hell. And, now, wasting zero time, he’s back with The Boogeyman, his Stephen King adaptation for 20th Century Studios.
It’s been a rollercoaster few years for the English filmmaker, and he shows no signs of slowing down, as evidenced in his latest conversation with The Losers’ Club. Last week, Savage sat down with Losers Michael Roffman and Jenn Adams to discuss his roots with King, the monster vs. the metaphor, shooting in the dark, and working with a major studio.
Elsewhere, Savage also shares a few scenes they had to cut for time, the hurdles in transitioning away from found footage, his affinity for Stanley Kubrick‘s The Shining,...

This post contains spoilers for "The Boogeyman."
After directing several short films and a 2012 feature called "Strings," Rob Savage directed television in the UK for years before breaking out in a big way with 2020's "Host," a quarantine movie about a Zoom call séance that went horribly wrong. He followed that up with the disappointing "Dashcam" a year later, but now he's back on track with "The Boogeyman," an effective horror flick that proves he can work in the big leagues.
I spoke with Savage about that transition from low-budget features into his first studio movie, as well as the film's biggest scare, staying one step ahead of audiences, a last-minute change that resulted in what he calls the movie's "best scenes," and much more.
Note: This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and brevity.

Do you have plans for June? Cancel them. There’s simply too much to watch — at home and at the movies — for any other activities.
Returning television shows alone could keep you busy. Among favorites coming back for new seasons you’ll find The Eric Andre Show, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Human Resources, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Outlander, And Just Like That, The Bear, The Witcher, Jack Ryan, and The Righteous Gemstones.

Up next from Host and Dashcam director Rob Savage is The Boogeyman, based on Stephen King’s 1973 short story, which is now playing in theaters this weekend.
Savage spoke with Bloody Disgusting about making a studio film on the heels of two smaller-scale found footage horror features, while also discussing his lessons learned from those experiences, as well as his approach to designing a PG-13, boundary-testing creature.
“I’d never really thought of myself as being somebody who would direct found footage movies, and then I ended up doing two back-to-back,” Savage says of transitioning from Dashcam to The Boogeyman. “But it took a little bit of a jolt to get back into that mode of storytelling. I was amazed by how much I was able to take from working on Host and Dashcam and work into this movie. Both of those movies were totally improvised.”

Rob Savage on bringing Stephen King’s The Boogeyman to life + staying true to his cinematic language
Rob Savage is a filmmaker we have been following and supporting from day one, as the talented British director has shocked and scared audiences, from his shorts to his pandemic-inspired horror flicks Host & Dashcam. Now comes his biggest production date, tasked with the wonderful challenge of helming a Stephen King story, as he brings The Boogeyman to life.
We spoke about his collaboration with King, and what it means to him on a personal level to have the keys to this specific kingdom. He also talks about remaining true to his cinematic style and ensuring his sensibilities and resourceful nature still comes through despite being in a grander, more conventional setting. He also talks about scaring people, and in particular, scaring us. Which he does really bloody well.

In 2005, screenwriter and author Blake Snyder coined the term “save the cat” when referring to the beat in a story—usually very early on—in which a protagonist does something so admirable it instantly engenders audience sympathy and trust. Think Aladdin giving his only loaf of bread to two street urchins in the Disney movie, or Indiana Jones saving Alfred Molina from spiders, even after Molina’s buddy already betrayed him moments earlier, in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
While watching the opening moments of The Boogeyman, this concept popped into my head, as did the realization that there’s a reversal of it. Consider: Audiences as of late have been inundated with horror movies which want you to know immediately they’re playing for keeps, and their titular monster is the genuine thing. Hence the scene where a baby is stolen and sacrificed to the Devil in The Witch...

Above all else, The Boogeyman director Rob Savage wanted what every filmmaker longs for when adapting the work of Stephen King: his blessing. Fortunately, Savage received that and a whole lot more.
Based on King’s short story that was first published in 1973, The Boogeyman changes things up by focusing on the Harper family, as Will (Chris Messina), a therapist by trade, won’t connect with his children, Sadie (Sophie Thatcher) and Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair), in the wake of their mother’s death. The family’s disconnection then opens the door to a mysterious creature that feeds off of grief.
Written by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods and Mark Heyman, the horror movie, which was originally meant to be a Hulu release, wowed test audiences before its VFX were even finished, resulting in a theatrical release. Eventually, it even met the approval of King himself during his own screening in Maine.

Long live horror on the big screen! After a few years of experimentation, the success of movies like Smile, M3GAN and Barbarian have made it crystal clear that horror audiences like to watch their films on the big screen. That’s why Disney and 20th Century Studios decided to put The Boogeyman, their adaptation of the classic Stephen King short story, in theatres this weekend. Initially set for Hulu, excellent test audience scores elevated the film to become a major release, and having caught the movie at a packed CinemaCon screening in April, I can see why. Audiences love it.
With the movie coming out this weekend, I was lucky to get the opportunity to speak with the movie’s talented director Rob Savage, as well as the film’s star Sophie Thatcher, who seems on the verge of a big career between this and Yellowjackets. Both were a...

British filmmaker Rob Savage, who previously directed an entire movie over Zoom with "Host" before overseeing the unfortunately grating horror effort "Dashcam" in 2021, is back. And this time he's helmed yet another Stephen King adaptation with "The Boogeyman."
Set free from the confines of the global pandemic and the lockdown-themed movies it inspired, Savage has proven he's perfectly capable of making a more traditional horror movie. "The Boogeyman" uses King's 1973 short story of the same name as the inciting incident for its narrative, which centers on widowed therapist Will (Chris Messina) and his two daughters Sadie (Sophie Thatcher) and Sawyer (Vivien Lyra Blair). As if losing their mother and seeing their father struggle to hold things together wasn't bad enough, Sadie and Sawyer then have to contend with a malicious entity that's unleashed on their home by one of Will's patients.

There are few fears more universal than one of a monster under the bed or in our closet, and few filmmaking techniques more viscerally effective than the jump scare. These tropes collide — effectively, if without much originality — in “The Boogeyman,” a loose adaptation of Stephen King’s 1973 short story of the same name. Featuring an eponymous threat seemingly drafted from the same biological blueprint as the extraterrestrials in their breakthrough film “A Quiet Place,” writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods graft the psychological and thematic shorthand of unresolved trauma onto a creature feature, while director Rob Savage (“Dashcam”) papers over the seams between the two with copious style and a bold, clear-eyed lead performance coaxed from “Yellowjackets” star Sophie Thatcher.

One day in the distant future, horror fans are going to have a rude awakening. Eventually, every single idea that Stephen King has ever committed to the page is going to be adapted into a film or television series; it's inevitable. But until that sad day comes, let's all continue to focus on what spooky King property is coming down the pipeline next.
The sparse but undeniably creepy short story "The Boogeyman" from the "Night Shift" collection is being adapted by director Rob Savage from a script by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, scribes for "A Quiet Place". Originally, the movie was set to premiere on Hulu this year until a well-received test screening and a winning endorsement from King himself convinced Disney's 20th Century Studios to release the film theatrically.

The adaptation of Stephen King’s The Boogeyman screened at CinemaCon 2023 in Las Vegas, and it sounds as though audiences are in store for something quite creepy. The first social media reactions from critics, including our own Chris Bumbray, hail The Boogeyman as an effective horror thriller with some great scares that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Just saw #TheBoogeyman at #CinemaCon which is based on the Stephen King short story. Like Smile, it was originally meant to be a streaming film, but it turned out so well Disney opted to put it in theaters. Could be a big hit. Sophie Thatcher from #Yellowjackets is great in it.

The first trailer for a horror film that’s setting off people’s Apple Watch heart rate alerts has dropped.
While the new release arrived in the US in February, UK fans have been made to wait a little bit longer.
Titled The Outwaters, the film is a found-footage horror following a group of friends who travel to the Mojave Desert to make a music video.
What starts out as a straightforward film evolves into a “mind-bending trip through terror”, with actor-director Robbie Banfitch unleashing a “hellish” sensory experience on viewers, in the form of “unexplained sounds and vibrations”.
The synopsis explains: “Mysterious sounds haunt them, and when a menacing force descends, their horrifying journey into soul-shattering darkness begins.”
Following its US premiere, The Outwaters was branded a “deranged nightmare” by one Twitter user, who claimed it set off his Apple Watch’s “high heart rate” alert twice.

At this point, it's almost a rite of passage for a horror film to get a sequel. They are a staple in the genre, with beloved franchises like "Evil Dead," "Scream," and "Friday the 13th" going on for decades. Horror is an enduring genre, and it is definitely ripe for sequels, re-quels, and reboots — and it looks like we have one on the way for the underrated Halloween terror "Haunt."
In a Reddit Ama (short for "Ask Me Anything") session for the upcoming Beck and Woods film "65," a fan asked if there was any hope for a sequel to the directorial duo's often-glossed-over haunted house movie. Fans (myself included!) will be delighted to know that the response was positive. "Thanks for the support. We can confirm that conversations for a 'Haunt' sequel are officially underway," replied Bryan Woods, who is one half of the duo alongside Scott Beck.

Each new year sees the release of a bunch of buzzy new titles hoping to be met with acclaim and approval from fans of the genre.
In the last five years, films that generated word-of-mouth excitement ahead of being unveiled included Ari Aster’s Hereditary, Dashcam in 2021 and, last year, Terrifier 2.
Now, you can add Skinamarink to that list.
The film, an independent release from Canadian director Kyle Edward Ball that cost just 15,000 to make, is currently making waves on the horror scene. It’s now available to stream on Shudder.
To fully explain the plot of Skinamarink would be to spoil its surprises. All you need to know is that it follows two young children, played by Lucas Paul and Kaylee Dali Rose Tetreault, who wake up in the middle of the night to discover...

Just as sure as the morning will bring the sun, so too will 2023 see the release of another Stephen King adaptation, this time in the form of "The Boogeyman." Perhaps not quite as well known as some of his other work, "The Boogeyman" originated as a short story written by the notorious vending machine hater in 1973 for Cavalier magazine, before later being featured in King's 1978 short story collection "Night Shift" along with works like "The Lawnmower Man" and "Children of the Corn." It's since been twice adapted into a short film, first by Jeff C. Schiro in 1982 and then by Gerard Lough in 2010.
The first-ever feature-length take on "The Boogeyman" began with a script draft written by "A Quiet Place" scribes Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, with Akela Cooper of "Malignant" and "M3GAN" fame having also worked up a draft or two prior to Mark Heyman boarding the project as a writer.

Last week, it was announced that the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman will be reaching theatres on June 2, 2023. The movie has originally been heading for a release through the Hulu streaming service, but it scored so well at a test screening that the decision was made to give it a theatrical release. Now King himself has taken to Twitter to reveal that the trailer is expected to be released this Sunday, with the first TV airing set to happen during the NFC championship game.
Looking forward to seeing the trailer for The Boogeyman, based on my story. I'm told it will run during the NFC championship game this coming Sunday.

So if you’re really hyped for The Boogeyman, be sure to tune in for the NFC championship game and watch it for the commercial breaks.

The new Evil Dead movie Evil Dead Rise was made for release through the HBO Max streaming service, but when it received high scores at a test screening the decision was made to give it a theatrical release instead. Now the same thing has happened to the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Boogeyman – which was made for the Hulu streaming service – scored so well at a recent test screening, it’s going to receive a theatrical release on June 2, 2023!
Last year’s release Smile was another film that went from a streaming release (it was made for Paramount+) to a theatrical release due to a positive test screening. That move definitely paid off for Smile, which ended up making over 200 million at the global box office.

The Movie: "A Wounded Fawn"
Where You Can Stream It: Shudder
The Pitch: Rod Serling's opening narration for "The Twilight Zone" teased "a dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind." It's in this realm that filmmaker Travis Stevens is most comfortable, and the one he presents in "A Wounded Fawn." Stevens' third directed feature is his gnarliest thus far, and bodes well for the kind of original horror movie that fans have clamored for since the first jump scare.
The whole bloody affair of "A Wounded Fawn" concerns jaded museum curator Meredith Tanning (Sarah Lind) who lives out this writer's personal nightmare of jumping back into the dating pool only to find herself in a serial killer's living room.

20th Century Studios and the Hulu streaming service haven’t announced a specific release date for their Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman yet, but it looks like we should be hearing what their plans are very soon. That’s because the movie has received its rating from the Motion Picture Association! The Boogeyman has officially been rated PG-13 for terror, violent content, teen drug use, and some strong language.
Coming to us from Host (watch it Here) and Dashcam director Rob Savage, The Boogeyman follows a 16-year-old and her younger sister, still reeling from the death of their mother, as they’re targeted by a supernatural boogeyman, after their psychologist father has an encounter with a desperate patient in their house.
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place) wrote the initial draft of the script for The Boogeyman, which was then rewritten by Akela Cooper (Malignant) and more recently...

Momentum Pictures, the distrib behind Soft & Quiet, To Leslie, Dashcam and All My Puny Sorrows, have nabbed the sobering predatory drama that landed the U.S Dramatic Comp Best Director award and jury prize at Deauville debut title by Jamie Dack. Screen Daily slipped the news that Palm Trees And Power Lines will receive a limited theatrical and VoD launch in March 2023 via Momentum. This is about a disconnected teenage girl on summer break who falls into a relationship with a man more than twice her age. While she sees him as the solution to all her problems, his intentions are not what they seem.…...

Writer/Director Rob Savage made huge waves in 2020 with Zoom-hosted seance gone wrong lockdown horror Host, a film recently voted as one of the scariest of all time in an online poll, and which caused sleepless nights for many horror hounds amidst the pandemic. Now, he returns with a Covid chiller of an altogether different sort. Where Host’s power was in its confinement, Dashcam goes out into our pandemic-battered world, as one provocative personality finds herself in an ever unfurling nightmare. In what is already gaining attention as a modern day video nasty.
Starring alternative indie rocker Annie Hardy (playing an extreme version of herself), this film sees the loud and controversial anti-vax, Trump supporting, live-streaming improv “rapper”, escaping the American lockdown experience to travel to meet an old mate in England. When things naturally go awkward, she finds herself on the road, unexpectedly asked to give a quiet...

The filmmaking team behind lockdown hit Host return with this Blumhouse-produced follow-up, shot by the cast and crew on iPhone cameras. Amusingly provocative, fast-paced and filled with shocks and scares, it’s the epitome of a wild ride.
Sticking to the fruitful territory of horror movies set during the pandemic, Dashcam centres on Annie Hardy, a gleefully offensive, Maga-loving, Covid-denying vlogger, who drives around L.A. at night hosting “Bandcar: The Internet’s Number 1 Live Improvised Music Show Broadcast from a Moving Vehicle” (Hardy’s actual show).
Fed up with America, Annie decamps to England, intending to visit her friend Stretch (Amar Chadha-Patel), but her obnoxious antics quickly get her thrown out by Stretch’s girlfriend (Jemma Moore), so she steals Stretch’s car and accepts a pick-up job on his behalf.

A film about the daughter of the prophet Muhammad has been pulled from the cinemas of one of the U.K.’s biggest chains following protests accusing the feature of blasphemy.
Cineworld, which also owns the Regal chain in the U.S., said it was canceling all upcoming screenings of The Lady of Heaven “due to related incidents” and to “ensure the safety of our staff and customers.”
Protests erupted in front of cinemas in several U.K. cities after the film, from director Eli King and writer Sheikh Al-Habibi, began showing over the bank holiday weekend for the Queen’s jubilee.
Telling the story of Fatima, the daughter of the prophet Muhammad who lived in the 7th century, The Lady in Heaven also makes links between the Islamic State militant group and various historical figures in Islam. It opens with the invasion of Iraq by Isis,...

One of the biggest hits during the pandemic, and certainly the most iconically “Covid” movie, was Rob Savage’s smart horror Host, a 57 minute chiller based entirely over a Zoom call. It was scary, it was incredibly current and it put Savage and his cast and crew firmly on the horror map.
Now with his follow up, Dashcam, Savage and his team are experimenting with the genre once again. Another found footage movie, Dashcam follows right-wing internet personality Annie Hardy (played by US musician Annie Hardy) as she live streams her increasingly bizarre evening for her fans (the whole thing is told via her dashcam or her mobile). Annie, the character, is in the mould of the Final Girl (the single surviving female who has suffered all manner of ordeals and makes it out the other side of the horror movie) but unlike in the classic trope, Annie is, as...

This review of “Dashcam” was first published Sept. 11, 2021, after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
In the future, when we look back at the cinema from the Covid epidemic, there will be a special place reserved for Rob Savage’s “Host.” The supernatural thriller, conceived and produced and released during lockdown, told the story of a seance performed over a friendly Zoom call, and how one person’s irresponsibility doomed everyone they knew. “Host” keyed into the most contemporary anxieties imaginable and it did so with class, cleverness, and aplomb. It was one of the best films of 2020.
Savage is back one year later with a new Covid nightmare called “Dashcam,” a film that also takes place entirely on a digital screen — the protagonist’s phone — and also takes place smack dab in the middle of the pandemic. But this time, the protagonist, a version of Giant Drag...

Arrhythmia of the Night: Savage Triumphs with Delightfully Bizarre Socio-Horror
There’s an art to successful presentations of unlikeable characters, further complicated when a protagonist is also unforgivably obnoxious. And when a filmmaker can transport us from loathing to at least a begrudging respect for said character, it conjures a rare sense of the sublime. Such is the case with Rob Savage’s found footage horror film Dashcam, technically the filmmaker’s second pandemic related film after last year’s medium-length item Host. With 2020’s “Host,” director Rob Savage was not only one of the first out of the gate to create a Covid-era horror, but he and his creative collective delivered results that far exceeded expectations. It set a new standard for a sub-genre entry, becoming a global pop-culture phenomenon in a way that had not been seen since “The Blair Witch Project.” It’s a masterclass in fear that hits every target it aims for.

Following on from the huge success of Zoom-horror Host, which was released early on in the pandemic, Dashcam is the latest film from horror filmmaker Rob Savage, and a film that is certainly being talked about, having been pulled from Vue Cinemas up and down the country. That in itself will give prospective audiences a little idea of what’s in store, as a bold and daring flick that will compel, and shock viewers in equal measure. To mark the film’s release, we had the pleasure of speaking to Savage, a director the site has been following and championing for some time, as we discuss his latest project, and it’s…. controversial protagonist. We speak about the use of found footage, and how great it is to see this on a big screen, making the decision by Vue all the more questionnable. And we discuss his upcoming project The Boogeyman,...

Annie Hardy plays a livestream host so toxic that even zombies struggle to deal with her
Nasty, brutish and mercifully short, but occasionally mildly amusing, Dashcam represents another dollop of pandemic-themed shock schlock from writer-director Rob Savage, recently renowned for his lockdown-set horror pic Host. This time around, Savage has exchanged Host’s Zoom-chat framing device for a Discord stream, with comments and emojis scrolling up from the bottom of the screen as a fictional audience reacts to the main content. This will probably need a lot of explaining to viewers in 20 years’ time, but for now it seems very à la mode and down with the kids, as is the blurry gore-soaked violence, smutty material (get ready for lots of jokes about anal insertions) and air of cynicism.

Following up the fantastically frightening Host was never going to be a walk in the park for writer/director Rob Savage and writer/producers Gemma Hurley and Jed Shepherd, but the trio have thankfully smashed it with the dazzlingly demented Dashcam.
With scale, production and (presumably) budget enhanced, and clout bolstered by Blumhouse, Dashcam retains the faux “found footage” online vibe that worked so well with its predecessor, yet this is more sprawling and adventurous, despite, like Host, being produced during the pandemic, with crew and fictional characters operating under Covid restrictions.
The story introduces us to grating anti-vax vlogger Annie Hardy (Annie Hardy) who livestreams a journey to the UK from America as part of her improvised driving/music show BandCar. Upon arrival, Annie meets ex-band mate/musical collaborator “Stretch” (Amar Chadha-Patel) who has since settled down, got married and found a job delivering food.

Abhijay Prakash is joining Blumhouse as President, the company announced on Monday.
Prakash will oversee all business aspects of the company and succeed Charles Layton, an 8-year Blumhouse veteran, who has been a close advisor to Jason Blum, as well as a senior business executive in the motion picture industry for over 30 years.
Layton will segue to Vice-Chairman and will stay on in a strategic and advisory role for the next two years.
“From my vantage point at Universal over the years, it was clear that nobody else in the business was as adept at figuring out how to create value from content as the Blumhouse team,” Prakash said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to make the leap to join this entrepreneurial team in helping further build this beloved, global brand, and leveraging the company’s strengths and unique business approach to access all the emerging opportunities in the film and television space.
