Ryan Murphy is not one to shy away from many things. This even includes casting names not normally known for acting, such as Lady Gaga’s early crossover role when she made her appearance in the FX series, American Horror Story. Recently, Murphy even cast Kim Kardashian in a later season of American Horror Story, who isn’t the most popular figure, given the amount of exposure she’s received for years. Murphy would drop a teaser for his upcoming horror drama for FX, which you can watch below, and Deadline has reported that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will be making his Hollywood debut in Grotesquerie.

Ryan Murphy Productions has dropped a teaser on Instagram for a previously unannounced FX series titled “Grotesquerie.” The promo, which was uploaded to the shingle’s account on Friday, described it as a “new horror drama series” that will premiere this fall.
The teaser didn’t contain any footage, and only flashed the names of cast members Niecy Nash-Betts, Courtney B. Vance and Lesley Manville over a black screen as Nash-Betts’ voice delivered a monologue, seemingly over a phone call.
“I don’t know what’s started. I can’t put my finger on it. But it’s different now,” she said in the clip. “There’s been a shift. It’s like something’s opening up in the world. A kind of hole to the center of nothingness.

FX CEO John Landgraf celebrated his 20th year at the now Disney-owned network Friday at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour by saying “adios” to Peak TV.
The executive, who famously coined the phrase back in 2015 to represent the content boom, announced that U.S. scripted originals tumbled 14 percent year-over-year (from 600 to 512) in 2023 and the industry has now entered its “Peaked TV” era.
“I was finally correct,” he quipped after two previously incorrect estimates for when the Peak TV era would officially conclude. He said that last year’s dual Hollywood strikes “undoubtedly played a role,” but the decline in the volume of scripted series was “likely under way” before labor actions by writers and actors brought production to a standstill.
Calling the change a “realignment” for the industry, Landgraf seems to have learned from his previous Peak TV predictions and did not offer an estimate of when...

Josh Andrés Hernandez is preparing to dig into the mind of Aaron Hernandez for his upcoming role in Ryan Murphy’s American Sports Story.
The actor spoke with Deadline about preparing to portray the troubled former Patriots tight end at Monday’s Los Angeles premiere of the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
“It’s a story with a lot of factors, as I’m sure everybody with familiarity towards it knows. There’s the mental health factor, the crime factor, the money, the fame, all of these things,” he said. “As an actor, it’s kind of like it’s a dream to have something so, so juicy to dive into it.”
In addition to researching Hernandez and his history, Rivera is also working on bulking up to play the part of an offensive lineman.
“They’re trying to get me as big as I can be.

As evidenced in its title, music plays a big part in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”
In the prequel to the original trilogy, “West Side Story” star Rachel Zegler portrays Lucy Gray Baird, the female tribute from District 12 for the 10th annual Hunger Games, who hails from a musical and nomadic people called the Covey. The film features Zegler singing several songs, including franchise favorite “The Hanging Tree.” Much of the music is folk-inspired, and Zegler sang each track live during filming. “We channeled a bunch of people: Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton and Joan Baez, to name a few. That was really the voice that we were trying to find,...

Lindsay Mendez Joins Josh Andrés Rivera & Patrick Schwarzenegger In ‘American Sports Story’ Season 1
All Rise alumna Lindsay Mendez is set as a series regular alongside Josh Andrés Rivera and Patrick Schwarzenegger in Ryan Murphy’s FX anthology American Sports Story, Deadline has learned.
Like with the other leads, her casting was done in early 2023, before the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, we hear.
American Sports Story, a new extension of Murphy’s “American Story” franchise, is a scripted anthological limited series focusing on a prominent event involving a sports figure and re-examines it through the prism of today’s world, telling that story from multiple perspectives.
The first installment, written by Stu Zicherman, is based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc from the Boston Globe and Wondery. It charts the rise and fall of NFL superstar Aaron Hernandez, played by Rivera, and explores the connections of the disparate strands of his identity, his family, his career, his suicide, and their legacy in sports and American culture.

I had completely forgotten that Ryan Murphy’s American franchise was expanding with a new pair of spin-offs, and the first is finally moving forward. American Sports Story will focus on Aaron Hernandez, the former New England Patriots player who was found guilty of murder and later killed himself. THR reports that Jose Andrés Rivera has been tapped to star as Aaron Hernandez in American Sports Story. Deadline added that Patrick Schwarzenegger (Gen V) has also joined the cast as Tim Tebow.
American Sports Story will be based on the Boston Globe and Wondery podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc., and will be scripted by Stu Zicherman (The Americans). The season will chart “the rise and fall of the former New England Patriots tight end who was convicted for murder and ultimately took his own life. The first installment of Ryan Murphy’s American Sports Story anthology series for FX will star Josh Andrés Rivera as Aaron Hernandez and Patrick Schwarzenegger as fellow former NFL star Tim Tebow. The season is based on the podcast Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc from the Boston Globe and Wondery.
The project reunites Schwarzenegger with Murphy; the actor’s first TV role was on Murphy’s Scream Queens.
These are no new developments that happened during the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike; both castings were done in early 2023 but never confirmed by FX. Deadline reached out to the network and producing studio 20th Television about both in January-early February; the deals are believed to have closed at around that time or soon thereafter.
“We have a fairly complete set of scripts for American Sports Story by Stu Zicherman,” FX chairman John Landgraf said at TCA on January 12, noting at the time...

Days after FX set the premiere date for “American Horror Story: Delicate,” the network has revealed that “American Horror Stories” Season 3 will premiere on October 26. The season will air four episodes as part of a “Huluween” event.
This special Halloween premiere marks a first for the series. In the past, the horror anthology has aired new episodes weekly, save for its two-episode premiere in Season 1. As in past seasons, new episodes will debut exclusively on Hulu.
The season stands as one of the last series that writer, producer and director Manny Coto worked on prior to his death in July.
The second spinoff from “American Horror Story,” Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s “American Horror Stories” first premiered in summer 2021 as part of the now retired FX on Hulu brand. Unlike its flagship series, the thriller anthology tells a new horror story each episode rather than each season. Little is known about the cast,...

As WGA pickets continue to mobilize at the remaining TV shows in both New York and Los Angeles, at least one Ryan Murphy-produced show was the focus of striking writers’ efforts on Wednesday: “American Horror Story: Delicate.” The show is currently shooting on 52nd street in Manhattan, according to several WGA East member Twitter feeds — including one person who posted video of star Kim Kardashian entering the production.
“It doesn’t appear that @KimKardashian is a friend of the labor movement. She just now crossed our picket line to work on Ryan Murphy’s @Ahsfx Hamptons, shooting here on 52nd in NYC,” wrote “The Blacklist” exec producer and WGA strike captain T Cooper on his Twitter account.
Cooper’s Tweet came hours after former “Law & Order: Svu” exec producer (and WGA strike captain) Warren Leight also alleged that “American Horror Story” crewmembers had told them that “they’ll...

File this under the worst-kept secret in Hollywood. To the surprise of absolutely no one, uberproducer Ryan Murphy is racing back to his old stomping grounds, and in the process of re-joining longtime collaborator Dana Walden under a new overall deal at Disney.
The decision to reunite with Walden — now the co-chairman of Disney Entertainment — comes five years after Murphy ankled 20th Century Fox TV for a rich deal at Netflix that was reportedly valued at the time at between $250 million-$300 million. That deal came right before Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and Walden, who at the time was Fox Television Group chairman-ceo. There had been speculation that Murphy and Walden might join forces as partners in their own production venture, before Murphy moved to Netflix and Walden shifted over to Disney.
Now, Walden oversees Disney’s full portfolio of entertainment media, news and content businesses globally, including Disney’s streaming business,...

Super-producer Ryan Murphy is set to make Disney his new home as his five-year, $300 million Netflix deal comes to a close.
According to reports, Murphy has been negotiating his new deal for the past year, and most of the details were finished before the WGA strike started in May.
Once dubbed “TV’s First $300 Million Man,” Murphy is responsible for creating hits such as “Dahmer: Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and “The Watcher” for the streaming service.
Murphy signed the five-year exclusive development deal with Netflix in 2018. To date this partnership has produced two miniseries (“Hollywood” and “Hanson”), three ongoing dramas, three movies, three documentaries and one docuseries (“The Andy Warhol Diaries”). “Ratched” and “The Watcher” have been renewed through Season 2,while the “Monster” anthology series has been renewed through three installments. (Note: Seasons 1 and 2 of “The Politician” were ordered by Netflix prior to the deal.)

Ryan Murphy looks to be heading back to Disney.
Murphy is set to leave Netflix at the end of his five-year overall deal, which was understood to be worth around $300M. Deadline has confirmed that he’s in talks with Disney, although no deal is yet signed.
The move will reunite him with Dana Walden, who is now Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment.
The move is not a huge surprise as many around town have been openly discussing him returning to work with Walden – he was previously under an overall deal at 20th when Walden was there – before moving to the streamer in 2018.
After a slow start at Netflix, with shows such as Hollywood, Murphy has been responsible for some of its biggest recent hits including Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and The Watcher. Prior to Hollywood, he had made series such as Ratched and The Politician for the streamer, which...

The 11th season of Ryan Murphy’s “American Horror Story” will premiere this fall on FX.
FX chairman John Landgraf revealed the news during his executive Q&a session at the cable channel’s virtual presentation at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour Tuesday.
The debut date announcement marks the first news of “AHS” Season 11, an installment fans have been clamoring for info about since Season 10, “American Horror Story: Double Feature,” concluded in October 2021. That 10th season was split into two stories, “Red Tide” and “Death Valley.”
Landgraf gave no specific premiere date for “American Horror Story” Season 11 beyond “fall,” though the fact a time frame has been given at all means there’s a good chance Murphy will be sharing the title, theme and cast for the upcoming season in the coming months.
