Schmaltzy German romcom with some drama
Horst_In_Translation18 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
"Eine Liebe in St. Petersburg" is a title which is a bit better than most incredibly cheesy German television romcoms these days, but sadly it still is nothing else. The dialogs are pretty bad, the action is not particularly realistic and way too much is over the top instead of going for credible subtlety. Valerie Niehaus and Martin Feifel play the two who, of course, get together in the end. She is a tough career woman with certain weaknesses (stage fright e.g.), so all the female audience members can make a connection. He is the very desirable altruist medical genius, who is not scared of anybody and almost beats up a guy twice his size. The "I got in a fight for you"-quote was particularly cringeworthy. Also, Nicole Heesters (Johannes' daughter) is in the cast.

Al yeah, all the clichés are in here, including another guy who wants Niehaus' character and a woman who wants Feifel's character. Don't mistake this for the Ralph Fiennes film with the similar title. Niehaus I never thought was a great actress and I am et to see a performance from her that wows me. Feifel has a bit more under his belt already, especially on the big screen. No idea why he decided to make this piece of crap. Oh and to everybody who saw some very likable character or even heroine in her, keep in mind she cheated on her man with a guy she just met. The end is obviously completely predictable, which is not always a negative factor if the way of it was actually written and acted convincingly, but this is obviously not the case here. So yeah, stay away from this one. the writer/director team has a history of schmaltzy goo in their body of work.
