As the Berlinale trundles on, the usual joie de vivre of a pre-pandemic film festival is in short supply, and dealmaking out of the virtual European Film Market has felt lopsided.
Sony’s $60 million deal for Tom Hanks’ “A Man Called Otto,” an adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s bestselling Swedish-language novel “A Man Called Ove” — which was made into an Oscar-nominated Swedish feature — grabbed headlines early on (Variety understands it boiled down to a bidding war between the studio and Apple), but hasn’t necessarily spawned the usual flurry of deals from Berlin halfway through the festival.
One buyer from a major U.K. distributor says the EFM vibe has felt “muted” for a company of its size, with an absence of broad-appeal product available once “Otto” was snapped up by Sony. “The lack of mainstream commercial packages is frustrating, and only puts more pressure on Cannes needing to deliver something big for all,...

Tom Hanks, Gerard Butler, Evan Rachel Wood and Rosamund Pike headline projects being brought onto Berlin’s virtual European Film Market.
Just how large its top-tier offers may be, and the volume of deals, are still open for debate.
“Very compact,” said Constantin’s Martin Moszkowicz of the EFM, which swelled somewhat thanks to a flurry of title announcements on Feb. 4, followed by a steady trickle of big unveils.
“The EFM does not look like it will have the comparable volume of the AFM,” Mister Smith’s David Garrett said. “But there will certainly be enough to whet people’s appetites.”
The market has, in fact, been building for nearly a fortnight. Following the IFC Midnight/Shudder domestic deal at Sundance for “Watcher,” AGC Studios moved forward its virtual EFM buyer screenings of the genre film by two weeks, closing international with Focus Features.

Chloë Grace Moretz and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are set to star together in “White Night,” a psychological thriller inspired by the true story of the mass murder-suicide in the Jonestown cult in 1978.
Anne Sewitsky (“A Very British Scandal”) is directing the film that will star Gordon-Levitt as Jim Jones, the Christian socialist preacher, self-proclaimed God and cult leader, and Moretz as Deborah Layton, a woman who rose through the ranks of the cult and tried to expose Jones before it was too late.
“White Night” is based on Layton’s memoir “Seductive Poison,” and it details how on November 18, 1978, more than 900 people died in a mass murder-suicide, one of the largest on record. One of Europe’s most formidable TV forces, Zdf Enterprises, the international distribution and co-production arm of German public broadcaster Zdf, has swooped on world sales rights to “White Night” (“Nuit Blanche”), the anticipated new show from screenwriter Julie Hivon who broke out in fall 2019 with “Amber Alert,” a big audience and critical hit in French-speaking Canada.
Commissioned by CBC/Radio-Canada, Canada’s national public broadcaster, “White Night” is created by Hivon and produced by Pixcom, one of Canada’s biggest TV production houses which also backed “Amber Alert.”
It goes into production this spring, directed by Sébastien Gagné (“Lacher Prise”). Its premise looks set to deliver some kind of verdict on the legacy of big business and Canada’s past in a current world. In 1970, a Zdfe plot synopsis runs, a pivotal encounter with her soon-to-be mentor, Aidrian Flanagan, allows Louise Hébert to become a supermodel and eventually launch her first perfume,...

Nothing may ever end but this Watchmen season does. Here we break down all the various points of the thrilling Watchmen finale.
The following contains spoilers for Watchmen episode 9.
We know, we know: nothing ever ends. Well, Doctor Manhattan isn’t always right because HBO’s Watchmen really did just end with its thrilling finale, “See How They Fly.”
While the prospects of a Watchmen season 2 should seem quite likely given the show’s success, creator Damon Lindelof made clear that this first batch of episodes was designed to tell a complete story. And tell a complete story they did! Angela finally got to speak with her grandfather and share his pain. Lady Trieu came enticingly close to gaining the powers of a god before her own father murdered her with some strategically deployed squid rain. Meanwhile Lube Man is still out there somewhere, lubin’.
