NBC‘s America’s Got Talent has been hit with a lawsuit filed by Jonathan Harvey, a former contestant, stuntman and escapologist, who performs under the name Jonathan Goodwin. A stunt on the shortlived spinoff series America’s Got Talent: Extreme went horribly wrong, and now Goodwin is paralyzed from the waist down, according to the lawsuit, which names NBCUniversal, Syco Entertainment, Freemantle Media North America and others as defendants. Goodwin alleges that the defendants “were negligent and failed to implement industry safety standards,” leading to injuries that are noted in the lawsuit as being “catastrophic” and “life-altering.” The stuntman was known for his extensive involvement with the AGT franchise, including appearing on Britain’s Got Talent, which he described in the lawsuit as a “professional and respectful” experience. However, his later encounters with America’s Got Talent were less pleasant, he claims. Despite these experiences, he decided to participate when the show announced...

Former America’s Got Talent: Extreme reality show contestant Jonathan Goodwin has filed a lawsuit claiming lax safety standards on the show led to an accident that nearly killed him and left him a paraplegic.
The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court. Named as defendants were Fremantle Media North America and its production arm, Syco Entertainment, Marathon Productions, and NBCUniversal, among others.
In October 2021, the TV production was at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Georgia. Goodwin was involved in a stunt wherein he was supposed to escape while wearing a straightjacket and suspended 20-40 feet in the air between two cars. The stunt called for him to remove the jacket before the cars hit each other head-on.
Instead, Goodwin was crushed between the two cars as the stunt went wrong, causing an explosion on the set and burning Goodwin. He was rushed to the hospital and production was paused.

The 2007-08 writers strike is widely credited with helping to ramp up the presence of unscripted television on broadcast and cable.
This year’s labor action, however, is not expected to have the same positive impact that the last writers strike did, and a confluence of events could mean that many of the top non-scripted shows are also hit.
“It’s not going to be a carefree, hot girl, reality summer,” one producer told Deadline.
Some of the popular game shows are already WGA productions. Jeopardy!, for instance, is written by WGA writers. While the long-running daytime prepares its questions in advance of a season, the worry is that a long strike would hit these types of shows, not to mention talent, such as hosts like Mayim Bialik, could want to show solidarity with the writers.

Jonathan Goodwin has opened up about his tragic accident while filming “America’s Got Talent: Extreme,” which left him paralyzed from the waist down.
On Oct. 15 of last year, Goodwin was rehearsing a daredevil stunt for “AGT: E” in which he was to escape from a straitjacket while hanging upside down between two cars suspended 70 feet in the air. If the stunt had gone as intended, he would have freed himself and dropped onto an air mattress waiting below. While Goodwin managed to pry himself loose from the straitjacket, he was jammed between the cars, causing an explosion. Alfredo Silva’s Caged Riders rode away with the grand prize on Monday’s finale of NBC‘s America’s Got Talent: Extreme, but some viewers were not happy with how the evening played out. Much like the original America’s Got Talent format, the finale saw the finalists and Golden Buzzer recipients return to the show to see the winner be crowned. However, unlike the regular AGT, most finalists, including the Golden Buzzer acts, were not given a chance to perform. The only two acts to perform were Caged Riders and Wheelz, the two acts voted on by an unknown group of “superfans.” Wheelchair athlete Wheelz was the first to perform but failed to land either of his death-defying stunts. Meanwhile, motorcycle stunt team Caged Riders pulled off a perfect performance that saw them crowned the winners of the first season of AGT: Extreme, bagging themselves a half-million dollars in the process.
