Delicate portrait of East Asian lesbians
melantha-9612221 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I would probably have given it an 8-9 if it were just the first three episodes. The romantic relationship between two East Asian women, Tingting and Yi-min, is portrayed in a very delicate and subtle way, which is quite typical of the context. The relationship between the two was at the border when they were at high school and when Tingting tried to cross over, she was hit hard. It's not Yi-min but the social values that hurts her and stops her. In this way I don't think Ting is approaching Yi-min solely because of a resurgence of old feelings, but also in large part because from her perspective the relationship has not been acknowledged and therefore has not yet ended, and she is waiting to draw an end to it.

The marital conflict shown in the last few episodes quite destroyed the whole experience, so I lowered the score to a 7.

One of the best queer stories I've seen.

Fragrance of the First Flower is a deeply moving and poetic story that really makes you feel vulnerable. The production was done with spectacular details and character development. The delicate chemistry between two women in an East-Asian cultural setting was extremely well-portrayed. Refreshing, this film will make you remember its gentleness and warmth. Worth your time.

Epic, beautiful and mesmerizing

This mini series is breathtakingly stunning and mesmerizing with outstanding performances from the two leading actresses - Lyan and Zai Zai. Set in the universe of modern Taiwan after same-sex marriage was legalized, the story gives a new chance of finding love, healing and true selves to two women who had gone separate ways from an unresolved romantic relationship in their adolescence due to societal pressure and internalized homophobia.

I am still in awe how well crafted and thought out the series was. And you can really feel the cast and director gave so much love, care and compassion to the story, characters and the lgbt community. The actresses, especially Lyan seriously wowed me with her performances down to nano-seconds. I hope she is fully aware of her own gifts and her impact to the global lgbtq community and Asian audience who have long craved for real representation.
