When the brain is empty...
Loichtfoier22 March 2023
Production companies are constantly racking their brains as to what they can offer the viewer any time soon. In itself, this is not a problem, I think, as a European who sees high quality in American film. And that is in the convincing scenes of really good actors and, of course, the set design, that is, the scenery itself. They are always realistic portrayals.

Unfortunately, this does not always apply to the genre and the storytelling. Themes like the musketeers were transported very well many years ago. A remake like this is basically an insult. Because one believes to bring the spirit of the times into the given modernity. Which can succeed, if it is transposed to sci-fi level, for example. Light sabers and light swords are not an invention of George Lukas, they existed in comics decades before. That's what someone like me would like to see. The four musketeers in the year 2500.

This movie is not worth the production costs.

a synopsis of the movie they wanted to make
hughhemington8 March 2022
This movie was odd and disappointing for me, having grown up watching one treatment after another of Dumas classic tale, done with acting, action, and a PLOT. This 2022 adaptation couldn't seem to get off home plate. There are FAR too many d'Artagnans for one thing. We're told d'Artagnan (the "main" one) has practiced with the toy sword his whole life, but all we see is him whacking lamely at a grain sack.

The cast is small for a theme usually swarming with cast and extras. The scenes are all shot in close narrow angle which is quickly distracting. The "main" d'Artagnan serves 2 years in the academy (we assume) but returns to his father clearly not a day older when any young man of 18 would change quite a lot in two years -- even a High School production would exploit this easy opportunity to reinforce the idea of time and character development!

I can say, the costumes were not bad, and I didn't notice any jet aircraft or automobiles, but I can't think of any reason I'd recommend this to anyone.

Love the story but disappointment on execution. Points for the effort and potential
momomojojo9 April 2022
Acting is not that great. But some does, it is not painful but could have done much more.

The sound is sometimes done nicely, but also wrongly done.

Pity, they pushed so much information in an unnaturally way that it is pity to see. The script is OK but due to acting it is just lowering the quality of the movie.

The camera work is just B rate and the sound also.

The intro is so much rushed, putting so much information in short time.

It is funny how rapid it goes but also how much potential it has in story.

Like the overall story but the sub elements are pity.

The ending is nice but also predictable and a bit disappointment in the result. The nice thing is how it got round up without being forced.

Even as a "B" movie this was terrible
offdwall9 March 2022
I watched this because the high rating but quickly found it was a stacked deck. They used every trick in the book to make it look bigger, such as using artistic drawings for the cut scenes, but I still think they made the complete movie with just 4 sets. It doesn't matter because the acting matched the sets, small and uninspired. Finally, the script. It was horrible, just horrible. Do not watch this, ever, find an old movie and be happy.

Promises so much but.........
grahamathomas111 March 2022
This movie promised so much but ultimately disappoints.

Very poorly choreographed fight scenes. Bad direction. Average acting.

Its a very slow film that doesn't actually go anywhere. It is nowhere near as good as any single episode of the TV show from 2014 to 2016. These were very well written and directed and had top quality fight scenes. Obviously the director of this movie did no research before creating this mess!

What a waste of a budget and my time!

Even one star is too much for this cock-up

Alexandre Dumas's "The three musketeers" is a perennial classic with an amazing story, adapted for the screen in different countries and languages. I've never seen a bad version and couldn't imagine a British production not doing it justice. And how wrong I was!

The idiots (it must be a whole bunch of people, not only the director) turned Monsieur de Tréville into Trévillé, i.e., pronounced "trevileh". Then the actors are totally miscast: Milady was given an annoying Spanish accent, fast talking and impossible to believe in a seduction scene. Among the musketeers the worst miscast is Porthos, who was supposed to be extremely strong. Instead the actor impersonating him is smaller than the other two musketeers and with bad teeth. Rochefort is given a lisp (or is this specific to the actor?). D'Artagnan's father is meeting his son after not seeing him for two years in the same position - at the table - as when he was giving him a speech before he left for Paris. There is no single view of a Paris street, all scenes are filmed inside (with the exception of the duel which is placed in a nondescript backyard) in exactly the same setting (meeting with Treville, father-son discussion, etc). Done on the very cheap.

The action reaches up to one tenth of the novel (the duel with the Cardinal's guards) and then stops brusquely, making me for a moment believe the movie was actually part of a series.

So bad ... I cannot believe some investors put their money in this film. The director should be banned at least for ten years ...

PS What I cannot understand is how the movie can have an overall rating of over 4 when there is no individual rating over 3? The real rating, taking into account the reviews, should be slightly above 2.

Oh Dear....
EdeBorrett28 August 2022
When the opening credits showed a nice engraving of an 18th Century Gentleman I thought we weren't in for a gem - sadly I was right.

The sets and the set dressing are superb and as good as you are going to get but the positives stop there. The script, directing and acting are all so amateur that you would get better from the local 'AmDram'. The armourer was a complete joke, as was the fight director.

Given how many times the 'based on Alexandre Dumas' novel' has been made how is it still possible to get EVERYTHING so very wrong - even, in this case, the timeline!

If you want a musketeers movie you still can't beat the Richard Lester version. But there are other versions that are quite watchable - this is not.

Really, just don't bother, you'll never get that part of your life back. Watch some paint dry, it would be more entertaining...

POOR IN EVERY WAY
Acting and producciĂ³n.

Very poor in all spects.

Both in production and acting. The title is the perfect hook for thousands of options but they limit the entire movie to closed spaces that make this movie worthy of a school play. Definitely a waste of time.

Fine but lacking excitement
supermellowcali8 March 2022
Not badly done for a low budget movie but nothing exciting. I would expect more from an action movie and from the story, which was also fine but simplistic. Not recommended.

Dull and lowbudget Musketeer-version
johannes2000-129 November 2023
This is a somwhat dull version of the well known Four Musketeers-story. It's framed as a flashback, told by the old D'Artagnan to a young wannabe musketeer. It starts as usual with the duels that young and impetuous D'Artagnan provokes with his soon to be friends, there are some skirmishes with Richelieu's men, and D'Artagnan even meets the notorious Milady, but that's pretty much it.

Don't expect any swashbuckling or dashing heroism, there's in fact hardly any action, most of that takes place outside of the camera and is only talked about afterwards. All settings are limited to small rooms, and just when you think: what will happen next? (we see for instance how double-crossing Milady is conferring with her evil chef Rochefort about how to compromise D'Artagnan) the movie suddenly ends, with as closing scene D'Artagnan popping up at his fathers after two years, to proudly tell him that he has become a musketeer himself. The movie doesn't even take the trouble to neatly close the flashback concept with a return to the old D'Artagnan.

All characters hold extensive dialogues and monologues, mostly in an almost declamatory Oxfordian English (in spite of them playing native Frenchmen), while Milady (actress Molly Hindle, just as English as the rest of the cast!) strangely enough is burdened with a weird accent, as if she's the only real French person around. In the cast hardly anyone stands out, neither unfortunately does young Matt Ingram-Jones, who is at least very attractive, I had so granted him a more rewarding part to put his teeth in!

Just bad.

Warning: Spoilers
Wrong sword, wrong king, wrong transportation, like the director know nothing of the era of the story.

Couple of trivia thrown together in a hat, shake it, out pours a lame movie.

One too many..
rdamian19633 June 2023
This is another movie adaption of Alexandre Dumas's tales of the musketeers. This has to be one of the worst adaptions to date. Usually I am entertained by musketeer movies. This one however is exceedingly boring. The acting is lackluster, although the script is not half bad. The action sequences lack, well, action. The movie just drags on. Even the light hearted parts lack any semblance of humor. This is one adaption that should have been left undone. I wish IMBd didn't require any lengthy reviews. I also keep asking myself why did I watch this movie to the end. So, if you come across this movie, consider strongly giving it a pass.

Pointless
robertasmith24 August 2022
So slow and boring. Truncated fight scenes and re tells a story we all know without bringing anything new. Really boring. When it ended it felt like I had watched a preview and the real film was about to begin. Don't waste your time watching it, buying it or renting it.
