PETA will be pleased - "Skin Trade," an investigative documentary that goes behind the scenes and exposes the cruelty of the fur industry is now available on DVD.
"Skin Trade" shows undercover footage from fur salons and interviews with several activists, including Congressman Dennis Kucinich, environmental attorney Jan Schlichtmann, designer Todd Oldham, and actors Alexandra Paul ("Baywatch"), James Cromwell ("La Confidential") and Jorja Fox ("CSI").
Directed by Shannon Keith, an award-winning filmmaker and an attorney who specializes in animal rights law, "Skin Trade" examines several illegal instances, such as when "faux" fur is actually dog fur, and several other misconceptions about the fur trade in America.
In 2004, Keith founded Animal Rescue, Media and Education (Arme), a nonprofit advocacy group, and Uncaged Films, its production company. Her first documentary, "Behind the Mask," garnered several awards, including Best Documentary Feature at festivals nationwide, and has been translated into 12 different languages.

There’s a difference between raising or hunting animals for food and slaughtering them for fashion. This is, essentially, the distinction writer-director Shannon Keith makes in “Skin Trade,” an indictment of the fur industry.
She interviews experts, designers and activists, some of them celebrities, and juxtaposes these talking heads with undercover footage captured at fur salons, where the salespeople deny that their furs are harvested inhumanely, and horrifying images from the fur farms themselves, where animals are caged in cramped conditions, criminally neglected and then killed in the most gruesome manners.
The furriers assure the secret shoppers that the animals are treated well and killed humanely with injections, offering all manner of reasons why it’s not good for the fur to be harvested any other way. But the truth, according to Keith’s film, is that foxes are electrocuted in the anus, raccoons are bashed on the ground and seals are beaten with clubs.
