Stanley's Strange Bedfellow
JordanThomasHall23 November 2016
It's Olive (Beverly Sanders) and Arthur's (Wynn Irwin) 7th anniversary. Olive is upset that Arthur reuses the very same card he gave her last year and an argument ensues. They threaten to divorce but decide to do a trial separation for one month instead. However, Arthur won't leave the house and moves only to the couch. Olive's mother (Kathleen Freeman) conspires to bring the two together by getting rid of the couch. It backfires and now they have to find a bed for Arthur to sleep in. Olive suggests to her mom that her son Stanley (Dom DeLuise) has a double bed with a hard mattress, prompting her misunderstanding mom to say, "I can't sleep with Stanley; he's too old for that now." They toss around different plans for switching around beds but it comes down to Arthur and Stanley sharing a bed. The night starts with Arthur clipping his tough toenails and sees Arthur give a introspective soliloquy about life while Stanley tries to sleep. It only gets worse from there as Stanley knows he must force a resolution. In the scene, Dom DeLuise resembles a character from a similar series, "All in the Family"'s Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor), giving highly agitated, fast-paced snippy remarks. DeLuise's voice even sounds similar to his predecessor.
