Compelling follow-up
Leofwine_draca17 December 2015
A compelling follow-up to the first film. This takes place three years after the events of EASY MONEY and follows the fortunes (or rather misfortunes) of a group of disparate and broken characters, each of them possessing a dangerous scheme to make some 'easy money'. Director Daniel Espinosa didn't return for this sequel, but his replacement Babak Najafi does a fine job in recreating the style of the original so that EASY MONEY II feels almost exactly the same as the first in terms of look and feel.

The plotting is engaging and the way the various sub-plots weave together is deftly done. There's definitely a tragic and downbeat tone to the story - some might say that it's merely realistic - a 'crime doesn't pay' kind of vibe that runs throughout. The performances are exemplary, with Joel Kinnaman and Dragomir Mrsic particularly shining here and making for a strong double act. There's not as much character depth as in the first film, but on the plus side the focus is on crime throughout without any of the romantic padding or the like.

Uneasy money
paul2001sw-114 January 2016
'Easy Money' was a gripping, albeit conventional, story of an ordinary man dragged into a life of crime. This sequel, while also quite watchable, seems to have less purpose: we're reintroduced to the various characters we met in the first film, and watch their continuing, violent and disastrous efforts to make it rich by dealing in drugs. It's broadly believable if a little exaggerated in tempo: drug gangs wouldn't actually survive if their individual members generally perished at quite this rate, but unlike the first film, there's never any possibility of redemption or escape. The sentimental ending rings a little false given the disregard for human life shown by all participants.

A not so well-written movie, still worth watching.
sanwik22 August 2012
This was one of the movies I was looking forward to see this year. (That said, I didn't have high expectations, I was only looking forward to see it)

Mostly I was curious of how they would build things up after a so well-written and trustworthy predecessor. I was a bit disappointed as the movie turned out to be like most movies in the genre. The movie is worth watching, but compared to Snabba Cash /Easy money it's not a worthy followup.

Easy Money was based on a book by a writer who has got direct contact with people involved in this kind of criminal activities, which made it trustworthy, down to earth but still exciting in a Swedish environment.

Easy Money 2 however, is loosely based on the trilogy of these books, which makes the movie lack of facts, reliability and makes it "just another movie" in the genre.

The actors do play their part in this movie, the screenplay is however not that good, which makes the overall experience worse.

Give it a shot, and see for yourself, but try to see it as just a movie that have the same characters as another movie, don't watch it if you're looking for a good sequel.

Or The Stupid Mistakes Gangstas Make.
redrobin62-321-20731116 February 2020
You know, to be fair, there are many reasons why gangstas get caught and end up in prison, the chief reasons being betrayed and stupidity. Many times, you'll read in the papers how drug traffickers get caught because they're speeding, swerving in and out of traffic, driving with no plates, driving with their lights off at night, blasting their music so loudly the bass shatters nearby windows, or circling around a block continuously like vultures waiting for an animal to die. The prisons are fill of their moronic decisions. Snabba Cash II shines a light on those stupid mistakes drug dealers make. They may as well walk around with a red flag sticking out of their skulls while shooting themselves in the foot.

the trust in friends
trashgang25 March 2015
Follows perfectly what happened in part 1 and again this isn't really a typical mobster flick. You must have seen part one to understand what is going on and again it's not all about the mob itself but it goes really deep into characters.

Even as there isn't any shooting going on still it all looks rather realistic. The slashing of ones throat really will get you, sigh, by your throat. So you can guess it, the effects are good.

If you like flicks about friendship and trust then this is a must see but if you think you will see the next Godfather, then you better skip this one.

Slightly worse than the first part, but no flop
BeneCumb26 January 2013
Well, the first half hour was rather dull, but then the events started to roll and scenes with with chases and betrayals began. This time, the focus is on other characters, but their reasons and acts were logically motivated (apart from the depiction of the Swedish police who were always long time and several steps behind). The characters are more trivial than in the 1st part, and bringing moments with remorse into the lives of hardened criminals was not very convincing; I liked most Fares Fares as Mahmoud.

The film is okay and if you yourself are okay with seeing a film made in Sweden with only a few Swedes in it, and you avoid of pondering why foreign criminals can act freely without having proper sentences and later being expelled, then you are a right viewer.

Goes easy this time too
stensson6 September 2012
The first one was a small sensation. Can Swedes make crime movies, which won't be ridiculed and parodied the week after? Yes, they could.

The same can be said about the sequel. The story is more unlikely this time and there are some more clichés, but the characters are anyway not square. They are hoodlums with complications and there's a well functioning story-telling with passable action scenes.

Not that you believe posh Stockholm being like that and why should you believe it about the subs? But movies like this have their own agenda, for better and for worse. This is for better. Can be watched, if you don't have anything more exciting going on in your own life.

Snabba ranks
deastman_uk17 October 2012
This little crime genre film rolls along pretty nicely, because it mixes different types of criminals (the weak minded or the desperate) and underlines the strange role that Sweden plays for immigrants.

The one thing I always remember about Sweden is that all immigrants hate the Swedes. This story mixes in Arabs, Serbs and even a Mexican. So the crime communities just get on with the job - and indeed Sweden itself is just a back drop here.

I didn't see the first film, but the different characters obviously knew each other, but this is only relevant later on. All of them meet some type of nexus because of something going wrong, and have to resort to more crime. Gritty without being unpalatable, we see that crime rarely pays and there is, of course, no easy money.

Compelling and exciting and so much better than what Hollywood does....
stuart-1277711 May 2018
Having watched a lot of Scandinavian drama I was impressed by this under rated piece of gritty film making. I do not agree with some other reviews here that this second part is underwhelming, Although it is set in the world of crime I found myself becoming attached to certain characters and being deeply moved at times by the plot lines and accompanying music. Well worth watching.

Horrible if you read the books.
wolw23 December 2013
The good news is that most English speaking haven't read the books, which are extremely good, I've re read them more than five times. And here lies the problem..... Since I've read the books I know the plot, which somehow only pops up here and there in the movie making you sit and ask WTF are they doing that for ? This movie is a follow up on the first book/movie and have almost nothing to do with the second book. This review goes for the first movie as well. Worth watching (goes for both movies) if you haven't read the books, stay away from them if you did (goes for both movies), it will only make you confused and angry.

Buy the books instead!

Destroyed the whole story and all the characters from the previous film ..
powmiia-118 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I had really been looking forward this edition, but after 2 minutes into the movie, the director destroyed it all, I went on and continue to watch the movie and had all the time hoped that it would return to the red wire that was trough in the previous movie, But I was disappointed that it never showed up ... When the film premiered here in Sweden, so did all of the newspapers and the media and the people to the sequel was so amazingly good..

But I was shocked when I saw the movie, where all these people had their opinions? maybe even one man's opinion influenced separated thousands ...

The director who made the movie, I had high hopes in him, but I never thought that he would fail so rough to make a sequel ... He has totally lost the grip from the first movie, which was very realistic ... and he had now dreamed away about how the criminal world looks ..

The first scene in the movie is enough ... drug smuggling on a large scale in broad daylight and in a rubber boat on the open water in front of hundreds of people and buildings ..

HAHAHA what a joke, you liked the first movie so NOT SEE THIS ... ALL CHARACTERS YOU THOUGHT ABOUT AND LIKED IN THE FIRST MOVIE IS NOW DESTROYED IN THIS SECOND MOVIE ..

Relentlessly Violent, Morbid and Depressing
rondo8982 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
When I attended a screening of EM/HtK, it was poorly attended. That may because of the blizzard that night, or it may have been because a popular on-line site of movie reviews gave it a mere 53% on their Lettuce meter. At the time, their highest rated film was The LEGO Movie, and that, I think, explains this movie's poor reception in the US.

It's a famous truism among Hollywood producers that "People don't go to the movies to get depressed," and Americans might've liked this movie more if, after all the mayhem, the female lead and the young desperado had ridden off into the sunset and were last seen walking down a beach at sunset and holding hands.

But for those of us who admire realism, not cartoon fantasy, this is an extraordinarily gripping movie. As Europe suffers through the effects of the IMF's austerity penance, unemployment among young people in some nations approaches 50%, and in such circumstances they turn to crime. This is the case not only in Madrid and Athens (and Detroit), but as people migrate north, everywhere, including Stockholm, where this movie is set.

Actor Joel Kinnaman's role is diminished from the first movie in the series, and it's also less interesting, but the rest of the cast more than makes up for this.

¡ ≥ SPOILER ALERT ≤ ≥ SPOILER ALERT ≤ !

If you have not yet seen EM/HtK, please read no further.

The only false note in this grim movie is near the end, where the two sympathetic characters, Nadja, the young woman who has been forced into prostitution, and Jorge, the guy who begs his dead mother for forgiveness for all his misdeeds, fall in love but are tragically gunned down by a shotgun-wielding assassin from the mob. Getting blasted by a 12-gauge at point-blank range would, in reality, have left her viscera splattered across the room, and when the guy takes a load of buckshot in the upper back, he miraculously does not go into shock or even cough blood. Instead, as they are wheeled into the ambulance, they smile and make dewy eyes at each other.

It's a mawkishly sentimental scene in an otherwise uncompromising movie.

More "easy" money than you can count
kosmasp31 December 2022
No pun intended - ten years ago I watched the first movie in the Snabba Cash trilogy. Back then it was announced I reckon that it would become a trilogy. I rewatched the first movie because just watching the trailer wasn't enough. I did remember Kinnaman and his role in it ... but had forgotten about the other players - again no pun intended.

The sequel let's a few year pass by ... as they did in real life. The fact that a few years passed helps - because this is a direct sequel to the first one. And the next one goes hand to hand with that concept. They may even have been shot together .. I would not be surprised if that was the case. Kinnaman whom I praised in the first movie has a big role in this one too. But others from the first movie play a major role.

The movie is able to connect as well as the first one did. There are certain things that do not work in the best way (I think that some people would be deserving of ... well some more punishment) ... but it always is in the eye of the beholder and their moral code I reckon.

Apparently there is a tv show - which plays after the movies? Curious to see how that plays out. Since I've seen the movie, I will be trying to watch the show as soon as possible. Good crime movies are rare to find ...
