Crows Explode (Kurôzu Explode)
Written by Kosuke Mukai, Rikiya Mizushima, Takashi Hasegawa and Hiroshi Takahashi
Directed by Toshiaki Toyoda
Japan, 2014
The live-action adaptation of manga properties in Japanese cinema is just as popular and frequent as Hollywood’ s thirst to translate comic book tales originating from DC, Marvel and lesser-known publishers in North America. Both come with their share of trials and tribulations, such as what to leave in, what to leave out, and what to change in order to smoothen the transition from the page to the silver screen. The Crows series — which began with 2007’s Crows Zero, was followed by 2009’s Crows Zero 2, and continues with this year’s Crows Explode – is in a special situation considering the change in directorial talent handling each entry. The first two were guided by the crazy genius that is Takashi Miike (which is completely normal considering the premise), whereas the...

The Fantasia Film Festival is taking place from July 18th to August 6th in Montreal and will feature over 100 films from around the world. We gave you a look at the initial lineup last month and now have an additional list of Fantasia 2013 films that will be screening, including Curse of Chucky, You’re Next, and Frankenstein’s Army:
Horror Is Child’S Play – Don Mancini’S Curse Of Chucky (World Premiere)
A rarity among genre franchises, the Child’S Play series (begun in 1988) has retained the sure-handed guidance of original screenwriter/creator Don Mancini throughout killer doll Chucky’s decades’-long reign of horror. Mancini, who will be hosting our “scar-studded” world premiere, graduated to the director’s chair with 2004’s Seed Of Chucky, after having co-written or written every entry in the series. His longevity with the project is, of course, matched by the fiendish voiceover work by...

Crows Zero and Crows Zero 2 are two of Japanese director Miike Takashi's most popular films. These high school gangster flicks are violent, entertaining and filled with energy and intensity. With the box office success of both films, it comes as no surprise that a third film is being made. The new film in the franchise, titled Crows Explode, is to be directed by Toyoda Toshiaki (Pornostar, Blue Spring, Nine Souls). The film will be set one month after the first 2 films' main character, Takaya Genji (played by Oguri Shun), has graduated, and will feature an almost entirely new cast including Higashide Masahiro and Saotome Taichi.Crows Explode's first trailer shows plenty of high school gang fights, just as you would expect in a Crows film....

A post on the official Prince of Persia forums this weekend has revealed an image that is said to be a leaked screenshot from an unannounced Price of Persia game, labeled “POP_ZERO_2“. If the screenshot is legitimate, it appears that Ubisoft’s next PoP game will be a reboot, that stars a different Price in an ancient Egypt setting.
The “POP_ZERO_2” file name in the screenshot is significant, as it coincides with the name “Prince of Persia Zero“. That working title was first mentioned by ex-Ubisoft art director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, who used it in a Cvg interview in reference to a canned 2008 reboot of the series. That canceled game was said to be set in a “contemporary world”, so it makes sense that Ubisoft would now be referring to a new reboot as “Prince of Persia Zero 2“.
None of this is confirmed at this point, so take...

Director: Takashi Miike. Review: Adam Wing. This is a man's world and Takashi Miike is leading the charge. That’s what we said after the release of Crows Zero, Miike’s loony tune adaptation of Takahashi Hiroshi’s best-selling manga, Crows. Miike had plenty of fun with the homoerotic nature of the story - it amounts to little more than good-looking guys wooing each other with elevated parades of machismo - but he kept it from getting too campy with regular bouts of adrenaline pumping action. Considering how many fight sequences there were, Crows Zero never got tiresome or tedious, thanks in large to stylish warfare, blazing fight choreography and the occasional juvenile gag. Cocksure and action packed, Crows Zero 2 promises more of the same, and for better or worse, that’s exactly what you get. It’s business as usual for the students at Suzuran High. Oguri Shun returns as Takaya Genji,...

Should that be lands, or explodes!? Its beena a long time coming but cult director Takashi Miike’s Crows Zero 2 – the follow up to his 2007 gang wars epic – is finally heading for a UK DVD release. That’s really all you need to know if you’re a die hard (and who isn’t) Miiki fan. Go get it. Synopsis: “Crows Zero” introduced us to Genji Takiya, a student recently transferred to the notorious Suzuran Senior High School for Boys, Japan’s lowest achieving and most violent school, nicknamed “The School of Crows” after its students’ tendency to band together in conflicting factions and battle each other for domination. Picking up immediately where the first film ended, “Crows Zero II” sees Genji as the head of the now-unified student factions following his successful but very bloody takeover of Suzuran. But his victory has left him unsatisfied and the uneasy peace amongst the students is,...

Fantasia has a proud tradition of showcasing the best and strangest of Asian cinema and 2010 will be no different!
The Asian film selection brought forth by Fantasia 2010 will allow spectators to experience a variety of Asian cultures, all while enjoying a wide range of cinematic genres that will inspire every possible emotion. From musicals to thrillers to war films and horror flicks, Asian filmmakers often use genre cinema as means of painting a portrait of their nation, highlighting certain social preoccupations, or examining historical events that have impacted that corner of the globe. This reality is strongly represented in the Asian film selection at this year's Fantasia Film Festival.
In order to paint an accurate picture of the national cinemas presented in our program, attention will also be given to certain key works that have helped shape the contemporary cinematic landscape of these countries. Therefore, Fantasia will offer an excellent selection of classic films,...
