In “Amphetamine”, Scud's most visually polished drama about a toxic and intoxicated love between a young Australian financial executive Daniel (Thomas Price) and a straight Hong Kong jack of all trades Kafka (Byron Pang), hope is the only thing permanently absent.
Amphetamine is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam
The melancholic Kafka is caught between working three jobs to help provide for his sick mother and a not so functional relationship with his girlfriend, who is struggling to understand his broken psyche. When she decides to break off in broad daylight in a posh bar, the boy with the sword has already caught Daniel's eye. Just to make sure we'll understand this instant crush, Scud shows us Kafka's beauty from all sides. Right at the beginning of the film, we observe him giving swimming lessons and being pestered by an elderly man who tells him “he has a body like Michelangelo's”. Soon after,...

There was no such thing as the big-budgeted local production film when it came to Hong Kong films at this year’s Hkiff and if attendees remember last year entrees they'd noticed the common link in the low budget works from filmmaker Heiward Mak. Last year she filled up the Hkiff with four films: she was the editor on Scud’s Amphetamine, she co-wrote Peng Ho Cheung’s Love in the Puff and she made both a feature (Ex) and short film (We Might as Well be Strangers). This year she was back with what was originally designed to be a simple television episode which then became the big screen project that was presented in this year's line-up. Beside(s,) Happiness might be simple in tone, but its one of the most heart-warming works that will have appeared in the Hk film scene in 11'. I sat down with Mak...

Peng Ho-Cheung’s cigarette-oriented romantic comedy Love In A Puff remained faithful to what Ho-Cheung does best: his writing. Much of this might have to do with his chosen collaborator. His co-writer, Heiward Mak offers much insight, modern-day relationships in the Hong Kong. - As this year’s edition came to a close, I've decided to look back and filter through some of the highs and lows of the fest. Among the disappointments, at the top of the list we have Ivy Ho's Crossing Hennessy which stars Tang Wei (from Lust, Caution fame) and Jacky Cheung. Scud's latest effort is a brash, self-indulgent, homosexually charged film - but then no one was expecting it to be anything else. As such, Amphetamine is forced to negotiate a number of tricky hurdles, both on and off screen, which it only occasionally manages to clear successfully. The story details the impassioned affair between openly gay banker, Daniel (Thomas Price) and the closeted, drug-addled lifeguard Kafka (Byron Pang). After spying him looking forlorn in a bar, Daniel offers Kafka a ride in his Ferrari, whisking him off to his luxurious apartment, where he attempts to woo him with his affluent lifestyle. Although we've previously seen Kafka getting paid to give hand jobs in the sauna, he has an ex-girlfriend and insists he is straight. Daniel is not put off however, and invites Kafka to move into his apartment, away from the bad influences of his ice-smoking older brother. But...

Based on Law's childhood experience, the story intends to bring out the nostalgia of the Hong Kongers through the portrayal of those good old days. It has yet to premiere in Hong Kong, but is set for a March 11th release and it'll also will be able to be seen during the Hong Kong International Festival. - Hong Kong Film Scene: LocalThe 34th edition of the Hong Kong International Festival will be bookended by homegrown films this year -- Crossing Hennessy, the sophomore feature from Ivy Ho (Claustrophobia) will open the fest alongside Like A Dream starring Daniel Wu. The festival which includes several international titles from last year's Cannes, Toronto and Venice film fests, contains some newer, attention-getting titles such as Love in a Puff -- Pang Ho-Cheung’s first time collaboration with Haiward Mak, who first caught Hong Kong film critics’ attention with her debut feature High Noon.
