Still: Nonsense by definition
Platypuschow15 March 2019
I've not had the best luck with Thai cinema and sadly Still has done little to change that.

A 4 part anthology tale, the films stories are all based on high profile Thai news stories including the infamous Bangkok night club fire and corpse in the water tower. Of course the stories are highly dramatized and given a supernatural element.

The film clearly had a budget and looks fantastic, on top of that the cast are some of the best I've seen from a Thai movie. So why the low rating?

The issue is the writing, the stories simply aren't very good. They suffer from common problems that can be found in Asian ghost cinema, as well as many confusing tropes that left me struggling to find the film likeable.

Again to its credit the film looks great and I was very much impressed with the visual effects and the cinematography, but with stories like that it really didn't stand much of a chance.

The Good:

Looks the part

Above par cast

The Bad:

The stories are a mess

Familiar Stories
ShawnInNJ15 August 2010
The premise of Tai hong is based on actual headlines from Thailand. However, with the exception of "Flame," the other stories are fairly generic Asian folklore. "Flame" is also the best of the 4 stories with excellent production quality and a twisty plot. The story that followed, "Imprison" is the least developed, almost like an afterthought. It is exactly what you would expect and it played out as predictably. "Revenge" is the familiar body in the water tank story. The demonic red-eyes SFX is extremely distracting and certainly below par compared to the "Flame." There are some gross-out moments, but everything else was the same story you read/heard/was told about. Haunting Motel" is set with a gay man-straight friend and a prostitute. It didn't really fit with the first 3 stories, but it was somewhat funny with a humorous take on the Grudge crawling female ghost. However, it was too over the top slapstick and felt misplaced.

Overall it is not that bad but it felt like the film really wanted to do one movie but ended up with 3 others.

A rather dull horror anthology...
paul_haakonsen28 June 2020
I happened to stumble upon the 2010 Thai horror anthology "Still" (aka "Tai hong") in 2020. Needless to say that I hadn't even heard about it prior to getting a chance to sit down and watch it. And with my interest in Asian horror, of course I needed no persuasion to spend time watching this movie.

The anthology is comprised of four different stories, which were all actually nicely interwoven with each other, which made for a very fulfilling storytelling. However, the movie just suffered terribly from having less than mediocre plotlines and not having the most convincing of acting performances or special effects.

Of all the four segments - Flame, Revenge, Imprison and Haunting Motel - I personally enjoyed Haunting Motel the most. That was because it had the most interesting story and the most memorable acting performance. And the director, Poj Arnon, of Haunting Motel was actually managing to make the anthology bearable to watch.

Now, for a horror anthology, then "Still" felt very flaccid and mundane, truth be told. There wasn't much of anything scary to be had in these stories, so for a seasoned horror veteran such as myself this wasn't particularly outstanding.

My rating of "Still" sadly lands on a mere three out of ten stars. I wanted to like the anthology, but it was just mostly a swing and a miss.

Redefines the term "bad horror"
SyoKennex7 January 2020
Around the World in 196 Films Country 2: Thailand Film: Still (Die a Violent Death) Director: Poj Arnon; Tanwarin Sukkhapiait; Manussa Vorasingha & Chartchai Ketnust Rating: 1/5 (2/10)

Die a Violent Death is a Thai horror film following four stories that were based off of four main headlines from the country. With four directors bringing something different to each segment, you'd think at least one of these would be good.

I was sorely mistaken. I don't want to go on a rant, so I'll keep it short.

This fil's CGI and special effects were absolutely tragic. The acting was poor at best by most of the actors. You couldn't feel any form of emotion from the directors - no form of love, or care, for their segments. The last segment portrays trans people as sexual predators. The ghosts weren't even believable as ghosts. 2 stars only for the nightclub segment and the prison segment was half decent.

I will not be watching anything from these directors willingly; I will not be looking forward to seeing these actors in anything else - and after watching this, I'm taking a long break from Thai horror because damn did this suck massively.

This film could have been good, funny, more comedic, but they tried too hard to be serious with a horrendous budget. Not a good look for Thai horror or for anyone involved with the film.

Lacks sparkle.

Warning: Spoilers
Thai horror anthology Still features four supernatural stories, each based on true stories from Thai newspapers.

The first story, 'Flame', sees Arm (Akara Amarttayakul) haunted by the ghost of his girlfriend Pang (Pimolrat Pisalayabuth), who died in a nightclub fire on New Year's Eve. Wouldn't you just know it, but he's a ghost as well, having also died in the blaze. Best moment: a falling illuminated cross knocks a bloke's head off.

Tale number two, 'Imprison' is baffling. A man in a cell is menaced by the ghost of the previous occupant, who committed suicide by hanging himself. To be honest, I didn't really understand this one, so let's skip to story number three, 'Revenge'...

...which is Dark Water, Thai style. You know the score: dead body in the water tank; drip, drip, dripping; hair in the taps - yadda, yadda, yadda. It's only scary if you have a phobia of hair or water, and I have neither.

The final chapter, 'Haunting Motel', is the worst, its ghostly happenings played for laughs, but failing to amuse this particular viewer. Two youths pick up a skanky ho and take her to a motel for some sexy time, unaware that the room is haunted. Lots of overacting and a twist that isn't much of a surprise make this a dud.

Overall, barring the nightclub decapitation and lovely Supakson Chaimongkol as the dead girl in the water tank, there's really not much worth seeing here. 3/10.

Rooting for the characters to die
nina-364-80759314 October 2018
This is absolutely the worst horror film I have ever seen. I actively rooted for the various characters to die. Its astonishing that acting can be this terrible. I dont know who paid to make this film, but they should be punished for it. Despite there being 4 stories, each one feels hours long. The effects are pathetic, the sets are garbage, and again, the acting is so terrible there almost aren't words. This isn't even "b movie" bad. It's not enjoyable in its awfulness.

I will say, of the 4 short stories, the worst was the last one. The over acting was irritating. The female lead was disgusting, like some sort of thai trailer trash. Add in what seemed to be some sort of transphobia or homophobia to that storyline. Just pathetic garbage.

If this is what Thailand has to offer for movies then they should be banned from making them.

Just okay
Demetriusronwee15 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Just because a character is homophobic doesn't mean the film is homophobic. Also just because a gay or trans character is portrayed as an antagonist, doesn't make the movie transphobic either. The straight guy and the straight chick were trash and antagonistic just as much. they showed the homophobe in a bad light too. So how's the message trans or gay phobic. Anyway as for the story's own merit I personally thought the watertank one was a little typical and boring others definitely were entertaining at least. but tbh while it's worth a single watch it was neither too out there, nor too explicit, or even obscene. Stories were pretty usual trope fare and the acting varied at times really good other times just pretty bad. So, it was just an average watch.

Half boring, half not Horror
nitzanhavoc29 December 2018
While the description on Netflix might be misleading, Still is not an anthology. It's more like a somewhat anachronistic series of events which can be roughly divided into four different plots, half-conjoined during certain interactions. A nice and impressive feature is the way the ending of each plot leads to the beginning of the next one. Acting is also pretty decent. The rest is simply too comic to be scary and too weird to be a comedy. I can honestly find no more to say about it, other than there are more boring parts than interesting ones, the latter being mostly sentimental scenes. That about sums it up. Would not recoomed. One of the only times you'd find a Horror with an IMDB overall rating that's actually fair.

A Thai Film With Gore
bloodeythornes4 October 2018
Thai films are fun for horror fans. Start with a sense of real, add a dose of the supernatural & ghosts, & bring on the extreme gore. You'll see 4 stories leading into the next, each with its own quality. Flame is reminiscent of the Twilight Zone & must be experienced to the end. Imprison has some poor soul put in a bad jail cell. Revenge has a murder & a haunting that works with the gross & fun characters. Haunting Hotel is flat out fun with a prostitute, two guys, & a ghost. Still may not be high quality but fun to watch.

Hit or miss.
el724 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Tai hong (English title: Still) is an anthology of four horror vignettes loosely connected to each other. Chances are you'll like at least one of these. All of them are based on real Thai headlines. Each one has a different mood.

The first story, about a protagonist caught in the grip of grief over the outcome of a nightclub fire, is hauntingly sad. It's got a bit of a twist ending that may or may not be satisfying, but if you're in the mood for sad horror, this one is it.

The second tale is about a young man placed into a jail cell from which the body of a suicide was just removed. He tries to sleep in the cell, but the occupant of the cell across the hall from his keeps him awake. He also gets visits from a Buddhist monk and a young woman who both say cryptic things to him, and it becomes clear that they are all trying to bring him around to feeling repentance for his crime so that he too can move on. You do find out what the crime is by the end, and it's a doozy. This one is steeped in the lore and perspective of Thai Buddhism, if you like Thai horror from that perspective you'll like this one, but if not it might be a miss for you. It's definitely one of the less memorable ones due to it's low key storytelling vibe.

The third story involves a deaf drug dealer living in a flophouse owned by a greedy landlady and managed by a no-nonsense young woman who figures into two of the other stories as a background character. The protagonist makes a deal with a young call girl but the deal goes sour. This is the 'body in the water tank' story, and it's also a story of how a crime can escalate into worse and worse behavior when the perpetrator tries to fix it and instead gets in deeper. For most Western viewers this is probably going to be the creepiest and most satisfying of the stories.

The final tale brings back the wallet-stealing foul-mouthed go-go dancer from the first story, and it's a comedy horror. The go-go dancer has turned to streetwalking, but she hasn't given up her wallet-stealing ways. She gets hired by a pair of buddies who were also background characters in one of the earlier stories, and they ride around on a scooter looking for a cheap one night hotel to conclude their business. They rent the VIP room from a gold-toothed old lady and soon discover the reason they got it so cheap: it's haunted. It's who is haunting the room that constitutes the twist here, and the who and why of that is what some viewers might find problematic, not because that kind of thing doesn't happen but because here it's being played for laughs. The tone is very much in the vein of the campy 'Oh My Ghost' movies from the mid aughts, but to me the funniest part of this story was the prostitute, who has to be the most unapologetically shameless hooker ever put to celluloid. The chicanery as she attempts to get herself out of the situation with someone's wallet intact is very funny. I could have done without the splat ending but I understand why the filmmakers thought it fit the tone. This entry is very cartoony and could be a miss for many, though I still think the actress playing the hooker had good comic timing.
