This isnt the kind of picture Id venture out of my way to recommend. The jolts just dont quite hit flush and theres no bid for innovation from director Elise Robertson but Ill admit the California scenery is quite captivating at times. Even if the examination of the supposed character development disappoints the outdoor shots are often vibrant the white of the snow playing a fine contrast to the darker tones we see indoors. Between the high points of the aesthetics and the handful of inspired performances (from a cast that all look about 15 years older than the characters they portray by the way) Id consider Donner Pass a fair watch if youre bored and the T.V. is a dead zone.

Two members of the wolf pack, Bronson Pelletier and Kiowa Gordon, are trying to get a little film called Heat Wave off the ground. The movie is a dark indie road comedy about two friends taking a cross country trip to go to a Bon Jovi Concert, and all the folks that them meet on their way. Currently the project has raised $2000 of the $20000 that the movie needs for a budget. Check out more below:
Heat Wave is a Dark Indie Road Comedy written by Russ Russo (The Projectionist, Donner Pass) to be directed by Will Lamborn (Award Winning SXSW and Sundance Director) and features an All-Star cast that includes Twilight’s Kiowa Gordon, True Blood’s Natasha Alam, John Carter’s Amanda Clayton, Machete’s Mayra Leal, Broadway’s Olja Hrustic, Twilight’s Bronson Pelletier and more. Heat Wave follows two guys from New Jersey running amok in Hollywood when it’s time to get out of Dodge, a Road Trip comes about due to the fact that Bon Jovi is giving a Farewell Concert in New Jersey in 3 days. It’s about life , friendship, the winding roads, discoveries of self and all the people you meet along the way with a twist.
The film is a collaborative effort stewarded by The Projectionist producer Atit Shah as a response to the changing landscape of the film industry. Russo and Gordon are partly financing the film themselves through Shah’s new company Create Entertainment in order to maintain complete creative control of the source material. We all experienced the frustrations of financing and institutional censorship as artists even when making dark comedy. But now, with advances in digital photography and distribution, we can tell a story in the manner we choose. Movies are changing and we’re changing with it.
The Heat Wave team has realized that Kickstarter is indeed a part of this new independent change, and is seeking to connect with our fan base even further with this campaign. Raising money will assist us in the production of our film in addition to increasing awareness of it. There is a distinct value in having an intimate relationship to those who care most about our work, and we are thankful to Kickstarter for helping foster these relationships.
Find out more about Heat Wave here.

Donner Pass isn't your usual direct-to-dvd slasher opus. Its storyline uses the macabre and very real history of the Donner Party (settlers who moved West in 1846 and resorted to cannibalism to stay alive after being stranded) as thematic material.
The movie then follows a group of modern-day high school kids spending a ski weekend at a cabin up in the Donner Pass area who end up finding out that they have more to fear than the grisly history of the region. Directed by first-time feature filmmaker Elise Robertson, Donner Pass stars Desiree Hall, Erik Stocklin, Colley Bailey and The Crypt Keeper himself- John Kassir.
Recently Dread Central had the opportunity to talk exclusively with Donner Pass star Hall, who portrays the sensible Kayley, who keeps her head once she and her friends begin to be terrorized by a mysterious madman.
Check out the highlights of our interview with up-and-coming actress Hall below,...

Donner Pass is not your typical direct-to-dvd slasher. Using the real story of the Donner Party (a group of settlers moving west in 1846 who get trapped in the mountains and resort to cannibalism to stay alive) as a jumping off point, Donner Pass sees a group of modern-day high school kids spending a ski weekend at a cabin in the Donner Pass, where the history of the deadly region is alive and well. Director Elise Robertson chatted with us about her feature debut. How did Donner Pass come about? My husband is a writer, and he was in a writing group with Scott Adams, the screenwriter. He read the script as part of the writing group and when he decided he wanted to produce something, he remembered the script as being a...

I'd love to say that Elise Robertson, actress turned director, brings something new or fresh to the "serial killer in the frozen woods" sub-genre, thanks to her distaff perspective on horror. While her work is certainly competent, however, she's not able to overcome the limitations imposed by R. Scott Adams' script. The setup is fine. The real-life tragedy of Donner Pass is well-known. In the mid-19th Century, a party of settlers from the East ran into terrible winter conditions, got stranded, and eventually resorted to cannibalism to survive. As a child growing up in Southern California, studying the historical account made me leery of traveling in stormy conditions, even in a motor vehicle with a working heater. After all, you never know when your siblings...

The tale of the Donner Party is a gruesome footnote in the history of America. In the 1800s, a group of settlers headed west towards California. The trip was only supposed to take a few months, but severe weather caused the group of 80+ settlers to become trapped in the Sierra Nevada. Many turned to cannibalizing the dead in order to survive. Donner Pass is set in modern times, where the dark history of the Donner Party ruins a weekend getaway for a handful of high school students. We chatted with Donner Pass star Desiree Hall about her feature debut. How did you get involved in Donner Pass? Actually, my acting teacher, Elise Robertson, directed it. I was in her class and she brought in some material from the movie...

We at MoreHorror really love indie horror. The newest film that caught our eye was Donner Pass (review) and we've got an Exclusive interview with lead actress Desiree Hall for your pleasure.
She's fairly new on the scene, but you might also recognize her from the MTV series Teen Wolf. Check out what she had to say below.
MoreHorror.com - Can you tell me a bit about how you came to be involved with Donner Pass?
Desiree Hall - I was taking an acting class being taught by the film’s director-to-be. One day while she and her husband (Mouncey, the producer) were in rewrites for the film, she brought some of the material into class and asked me to read it for her. A few months later she asked me to audition and then a few weeks after that we were in rehearsals just prior to shooting.

Little needs to be said to make the story of the Donner Party more horrific. In May 1846, 87 settlers headed west with the intention of settling in California and Oregon. The group should have reached California by September of that year, but inclement weather trapped them in the Sierra Nevada until they could be rescued beginning in February of 1847. In that time, the much of the group resorted to cannibalism in order to survive. Only 48 did. Elise Robertson's new film, Donner Pass, is set in modern times but draws upon the Donner legacy. A group of high school kids head to a remote cabin located in Donner Pass (where the Party was trapped) for a parents-free weekend of sex, booze, and skiing. Their numbers begin to...

One thing we, as horror fans, tend to do is root for the bad guy.
There are a variety of factors that might cause this. Is it because we're all twisted? Well, we're all must be a little twisted to enjoy seeing maiming and freak shows that we love to watch, but there's something more to it than that, something we can't control.
Some times we find ourselves rooting for the bad guy because they've transcended a level of antagonism, they've become a chaotic anti-hero. We've seen the recurring "big bad" in so many films, it's why we keep coming back for more and we want to see him triumphant. The best examples of course are Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees and Halloween's Michael Meyers. Another reason that we start to root for the bad guy is because the cast in the film is so utterly despicable that watching...

Director: Elise Robertson.
Writer: R. Scott Adams.
The Donner Party was a group of pioneers who took a new path west in the 19th Century. They became trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and relief was difficult because of the Mexican American War. Cannibalism and murder took place during one of the worst snowstorms to hit that region. These tragedies have been recorded in many films including the recent The Donner Party (2009) and even in 1999's Ravenous. In Donner Pass, the legend of cannibalism is still here, but this movie modernizes the legend. A truly innovative independent film, Donner Pass brings the cannibalism and the murder while also bringing a smart little story full of sub-plots and interesting characters.

All right, kids! Time to add a little red to your hump day. Wow, in retrospect that sounded really dirty. In any event... on tap for you right now is a new and exclusive clip from Donner Pass. Bring your own mop. Things get kinda messy!
Donner Pass tells the story of settlers in 1846 that became snowbound in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and had to resort to cannibalism to survive. Some 150 years later, a group of teens on a snowboard trip discover that the curse of the Donner Party still haunts those mountains when members of their group start turning up not only dead, but half-eaten. Nothing - and no one - is what it seems in this provocative dark thriller. And history doesn't always stay in the past.

Legend has it that born out of the macabre and well-known history of the Donner Party was a curse of insatiable hunger that can make anyone who befalls it capable of disquieting evil.
For seven teens heading up for a ski weekend during a nasty blizzard, this is nothing more than just a ghost story to tell around a campfire. However, when they find one of their own dead and half-eaten, they are forced to face the fact that this ghost story just might actually be true.
With their car snowed out and no where to run and with conflicts rising amongst each other, the group not only have to confront the startling truth behind the legend but also work together to survive it.

You would think a few cheapie knock-offs or maybe a historical account of the tragedy of the Donner Party in the late 1800s, would fill up our video stores, but I personally can’t recall one. Donner Pass might fit the bill. The film is getting some rave reviews from people like the screenwriter of Captain America: The First Avenger.
Here’s the plot: “In 1846 a party of settlers became snowbound in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and had to resort to cannibalism to survive. Donner Pass A talented lineup of TV actors including John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt), Desiree Hall (Teen Wolf) and Adelaide Kane (Power Rangers R.P.M.) gather to tackle the horror genre in Elise Robertson's feature length directorial debut of "Donner Pass". Donner Pass (the trailer can be seen below after the jump) is a dark, supernatural ghost story that is sure to give you goosebumps and make your spine tingle.
