I don't want this series to end.
Sleepin_Dragon16 October 2023
Tamerlane pushes her husband away, explaining that he's merely a cog in her business, a handsome face and nothing more, she plans a huge product launch, but things don't quite go to plan.

Wow, this was seriously twisted, it's getting darker with every passing episode, this was deliciously macabre, as you'd expect.

We are learning more about Verna, who she is, but maybe not her motivation for doing what she's done to The Ushers, I'm sure that will be unveiled soon.

One thing I hadn't associated, there seem to be similarities to this, and the oxycontin scandal.

The actual death scene, I'm not sure how I can explain it as such, but talk about beautifully shot and pieced together.

Samantha Sloyan absolutely nails it here, Tamerlane has perhaps been the strangest of the siblings so far, but once again, no heart, it's all just business, even the relationship.

9/10.

Sam Sloyan? Sam SLAYIN'!
GregTheStopSign9512 October 2023
Yes, I'm biased, I'll admit it. I liked Sam in Hush, I liked her in Hill House, I REALLY liked her in The Midnight Club. I absolutely LOVED her in Midnight Mass. Bev was literally the first character in any show ever that I wanted to throttle with my own hands and Sam played her brilliantly. So, yeah, I'm biased. I still think she killed it as Tamerlane Usher, and in this episode especially. Her slow descent into madness really kicked up a notch, and the way Flanagan had her space out and lose time was great...and green is absolutely her colour here...

Anyway, even though I'm biased I can put that aside long enough to know that this is yet another great episode in what is quickly shaping up to be Flanagan's second best series after Midnight Mass.

How many mirrors does Tammy have?!

Warning: Spoilers
Ok, I'm really digging the show after last episode & this one.

There's only a handful of scenes between current Roderick & Dupin (which is a bummer), but the recent flashback story was extremely well done.

Mark Hamill's Arthur Gordon Pym gets a bit more backstory, and he's excellent once again this episode. Speaking of Hamill, this may be my favorite non-Star Wars performance of us (outside of voice acting). He totally sells the grisly, experienced, loyal family attorney who's willing to get in the mud & help them with aboslutely anything.

Carla Gugino was awesome again as Verna, and she had some killer lines while taunting Tammy that had me laughing. Her delivery was mocking, but not too flamboyant, overall just awesome.

And Tammy... while not the most interesting Usher child, she sure was the one that had the least redeeming qualities in my eyes. Again, this show has done well making everyone quite detestable, though watching a bunch of crappy people be crappy isn't exactly entertaining. Thankfully, the show manages to not linger to the point of making it grating, and it knows that we know what's coming by the end. It plays with that expectation & makes the comeuppance all the more worth it.

Anyway, the show is really hitting its stride. Still eagerly awaiting the reveal of what the heck happened New Years Eve 1980 though!

9/10.

Below I'll rant a little more about specific nit-picking, but the actual review is done!

**********************************************

Nitpicking:

Madeline has been presented as this wise, plotting, puppet master character, and definitely the more calculated & assertive of the two sibblings.

She's also been the one willing to take action, or at lesat manipulate Roderick to do so. Even before having hard evidence, she made a connection between the tragedies befalling the Usher family and something that happened in their past; something potentially supernatural. Not willing to even entertain the idea, Roderick blows her off repeatedly. Eventually, Pym finally presents them with some hard evidence, and it's Madeline who once again accepts the reality of the situation, despite it seeming impossible.

Which brings me to the nitpick & what kind of bothered me.

Madeline's definitely been all business & gung-ho about power, BUT she's also 100% on top of anything that seems like a threat to that power. She views the Usher family as an establishment, similar to royalty, and will do ANYTHING to see its continued success.

Considering all that they've experienced in the last week (undergoing a massive lawsuit, losing FOUR nieces & nephews to inexplicable, freak deaths, and now having her fears confirmed that some ancient entity is involved), why did she care so much about Tammy's "Built" presentation & prioritize that over the 'Verna' imminent threat? For someone as intelligent, protective & assertive as her, why didn't she at the very least inform the 2 remaining children of the threat?

No heads up on what to look out for, not making them aware of anthing, nor even questioning them if they've seen the woman already. She just tables it in favor of Tammy's business venture, despite Roderick losing a son or daughter nearly every passing day.

I mean, that's the bare minimum I'd expect from someone who lost 4 nieces & nephews, and prioritizes the Usher image above all else. Hoenstly, you'd think she'd prioritize tracking down/looking out for Verna over EVERYTHING now. But yeah atleast, inform the family, distribute pictures, ask Tammy if she's seen the woman, etc. Or tell her postpone the public debut "sorry, not sorry" & game plan.

After all, in an earlier episode they said they're obviously at war now & something is out to get them. Ok, so perhaps take the war seriously?

Anyway, I'm fully aware I'm nitpicking & just wrote a novel over something trivial. But c'mon... it's hard to overlook NOBODY telling the only remaining Usher kids (and obvious next targets) they have identified a suspect to be on the lookout for!

mirrors

The pressure of Verna on Ushers. The Goldbug festivity. And the descent into madness of too fragile, selfish, vulnerable and tyranic Tamerlane.

A film about shadows around a powerful family, reflecting their fall step by step.

The heart of this chain of deaths, closer end of Roderick and the reduced power of Madeleine is not exactly Verna but the memories of viewer about films on same theme.

A powerful episode as a precise crafted parable. And the admirable performance of Samantha Sloyan in the game of nuances of deeper profound loneliness of Tamerlane.

But the key tool are the brocken mirrors .And, sure, the final scene.

S1.E6 - Mirrors [9/10]

Warning: Spoilers
(S1. E6) My Live Reaction / Review for The Fall of the House of Usher Season 1 Episode 6 ''Goldbug''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Is it Tamerlane's time to die? Is the mysterious woman immortal? Is she the devil? Is she a god? Nobody knows. They found pictures of her from 1901? What? How? We need some answers. Tamerlane's presentation was an absolute disaster. The mysterious woman can also appear and disappear like that? And Tamerlane is dead, I liked the scene where she died. Only one child left. Overall this episode was good, my rating is 9/10.

no connection to Poe, but Samantha Sloyan is terrific
nerrdrage10 March 2024
If you were expecting there to be anything but lip service given to Poe, you'll be disappointed. This one has the weakest connection yet. The Gold Bug is a mere logo, in the service of one of those inane Goop type subscription services, designed to rip off the gullible. It might have been cool if the lotions and potions had been poisoned, but no.

Instead we get Samantha Sloyan in full meltdown mode, which is at least fun to watch. The stuff with her being a voyeur but being aggravated at the notion that she could have a doppleganger who replaces here, is just kind of huh?

The better plotline: Pym tracking down more info about Verna. Why isn't Mark Hamill seen more often in character roles? He's great!
