- DO WE HAVE TO DO THIS JOKE FOREVER? COUGAR TOWN
The Cul-de-Sac Crew needs something to shake up the monotony. Andy (Ian Gomez) is getting progressively worse at Penny Can, Bobby (Brian Van Holt) is depressed because will not feature anyone from the planet Krypton, Ellie (Christa Miller) is upset that Jules (Courteney Cox) always has to have her way (even though she was devolving into a redneck), and Jules is upset Barb keeps feeding her salacious stories of her sex life. (I don't need to explain the Cuban Sandwich, right?)
JULES: When are people going to understand that's not me anymore? What do I have to do? Change my name?
BARB: You'll be back. The filth is strong within you!
Jules decides the gang (and perhaps Tom if he becomes less creepy) will try some games they did as kids, off of Travis' (Dan Byrd) suggestion that adults can reduce stress that way. However, playing a variation of hide-and-seek called Sardine Can, where you hide with the person who's hiding when you find them, doesn't sound particularly appealing, especially when Tom finds the hiding Ellie first, and Jules can't get either Grayson (Josh Hopkins) or Travis to agree with her Ellie is crazy. Bobby and Laurie (Busy Philipps) hide out at Grayson's, where he shouldn't have told people he had two steaks and a bottle of champagne. While they discuss their new show, Beef & Bubbles (which, sadly, sounds more interesting than most of the pilots for next season I've heard of so far), Laurie confronts him about Sam, his new friend. His new female friend. And very close, apparently, judging by their make-out session. But Beef wants Bubbles to keep a lid on it. The gang is extremely judgmental and Bobby doesn't want to introduce her to that. Understandable, given Jules practically hog-ties Travis into talking about who she really is, and Grayson literally hog-ties Andy to a tree for getting upset at only him when Ellie and Bobby also ragged him at Penny Can. Fortunately for Travis, he finds where Ellie and Tom are hiding and doesn't have to listen to his mom rant anymore.
Grayson finds his way to Ellie's hiding place (the back of her new truck), and not even Jules' evil trick of a 'wine break' works on them. Ellie explains why Andy is only upset with Grayson. Andy's parents sent him to prep school to get a good education, but Andy was constantly teased and beat up by preppy d-bags who looked a lot like Grayson, and Grayson teasing him brought those painful memories back. Grayson figures he should go apologize to Andy. And untie him, too.
GRAYSON: You know why you're an idiot? One of the reasons, anyway? Because you're still trying to compete with a bunch of jerks from your past. But dude, you already won. You got the hot wife, a beautiful son, and a great job. Those 'cool' guys? They're probably more like me. Divorced, struggling through life. Peaked at 18.
Laurie suggests to Bobby to invite Sam over, since everybody was so good to Smith when she dated him (at least they didn't talk smack about him in her presence), and Sam comes over. And hides in the truck from Jules like everybody else is. Jules gives up, but not before trying to coax Tom out with a hug. (The last hug she gave him, he grabbed her ass. Actually slid his hand in her jeans to do it. Ewww!) Jules finally calls 'friend test', which was something you say when you're testing the friendship (Where would Courteney have thought up the term 'friend test'? I can't figure it out.) Everybody gets out, and the butt-numbathon (Laurie's term) is over. Jules apologizes for ordering people around so much, but the gang lets her know they hang out at her place because they like her so much. And Bobby even introduces Jules to his new girlfriend. Time for another round, only Tom can hide this time! Everybody else will go have some wine. And rag about Sam after she dumps Bobby. (LAURIE: Her face made me want to learn how to box.)
