A tense journey through the blurred lines between mental health and possession
cutie718 August 2023
"Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism," a 2023 Australian film, takes viewers on a tense journey through the blurred lines between mental health and possession. The movie follows the gripping tale of a troubled young couple, Lara and Ron, as they grapple with the possibility of an exorcism to cure her disturbing behavior. With impactful scenes depicting Ron's desperation and the involvement of an unsanctioned exorcist named Daniel, the film delves into the darker aspects of faith and the human psyche.

The movie draws inspiration from the real-life case of Joan Vollmer, shedding light on the chilling events that unfolded over a four-day period, culminating in tragedy. The performances of the cast, including Georgia Eyers as Lara and Dan Ewing as Ron, effectively convey the emotional turmoil and internal struggle of the characters.

While "Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism" explores thought-provoking themes of religious fervor, mental health, and the consequences of blind faith, it falls short in certain aspects. The filmmakers have opted for a psychological approach rather than relying on traditional horror tropes like spinning heads and excessive gore. However, this approach may leave some viewers longing for more suspenseful and visually striking moments.

Directed by Nick Kozakis and penned by Alexander Angliss-Wilson and Sarah Baker, the film's strength lies in its willingness to tackle complex themes surrounding demonic possession and religious beliefs. While it may not satisfy those seeking traditional horror thrills, its thought-provoking narrative offers a unique perspective on the clash between the human mind and the supernatural.

GODLESS
BandSAboutMovies20 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Made in Victoria, Australia, Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism is about a young married couple named Lara (Georgia Eyers) and Ron (Dan Ewing). In some ways, you can see the way that she's acting -- nude dancing under the moon, violent behavior and mood swings -- as a mental health issue. Or maybe she's possessed. That's the way her husband is leaning and he's nearly begging Dr. Walsh (Eliza Matengu) to sign off on an exorcism. He's so devoted to getting one, he even gets an unsanctioned exorcist and that's when things go off the rails.

The man who Ron gets to exorcise his wife is Daniel (Tim Pocock). He tells Ron not to give his wife any food or drink and not to believe anything she tells him, because she's no longer his wife. She's of the Devil. Then they invite members of his church to scream at Lara and attempt to physically beat the demon out of her.

This movie is based on the real case of Joan Vollmer, a Victoria woman whose husband Ralph claimed would take on the shape of animals and act like a wanton woman, as well as speaking in demonic voices. Over a four-day period, assisted by a neighbor and phone instructions from his pastor, she was tied to a chair and prayed over while being denied food and water. Other church members soon visited and held her down while her eyes were kept open to witness the prayers. After days of slapping Joan in the face, two demons remained. Matthew Nuske joined the group and he led the group in destroying Joan's greenhouse, all of her flower beds and wrapping the house seven times in clear wrap. Then, he smashed Joan's head into walls before having five people sit on her body for hours, crushing her internal organs and giving her a heart attack. The pastor came at this point, as a message from God told him that he could just lay hands on the dead Joan and bring. Her back to life. Two days later, she was still dead.

Neighbor Leanne Reichenbach got four months for manslaughter and false imprisonment. Church member David Klingner received three months, exorcist Matthew Nuske was found guilty of false imprisonment and received a suspended sentence and Ralph Vollmer was convicted of false imprisonment and reckless injury. He served no jail time, moved to Queensland and remarried.

Not only could this movie happen, it already has.

Directed by Nick Kozakis and written by Alexander Angliss-Wilson and Sarah Baker, this isn't the movie for you if you're looking for stuttery editing, herky jerky mannerisms and spinning heads. This is a more psychological exploration of how demonic man and religious belief can be.

Dead is the prerequisite for resurrection
lauren04047 January 2024
Ughh this movie is so sad and frustrating. This isn't the GREATEST movie, but worth hanging in there as there are some shocking moments. Definitely not a horror, but it is horrifying. The end is absolutely appalling and when you find out the event leading up to her crisis (of faith? Mental crisis?) it makes it all the more heartbreaking. How did Lara end up with this loser? I need a prequel to find out how she settled for this douchebag zealot - total downgrade.

All of these characters belong in jail. It makes it even more disturbing that very similar events really happened and more than once.

Boring and tedious, don't believe the high ratings
mosstheophilus2 July 2023
I cannot imagine a more boring movie. It has all the typical cliches with nothing to say and no twists. If you've seen a bad exorcism 'horror' movie, you've seen this movie already. Every 'haunting melody', jump scare, jump cut, and sound effect feels like it's the very top result if you were to google 'horror movie cliches'. This movie could have been made by ChatGPT. Save your time and watch something better. The really high ratings seem to be fake and keep praising the director though the actual direction couldn't have been more mundane. The movie feels like it could have come out 30 years ago and it still wouldn't have been good - just less like you've seen it a million times already. The main actress does a good job to be fair but the movie itself wasn't worth my time.

Fascinating & Disturbing
thomvine2 April 2023
Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism is a fascinating film, It showcases disturbing suspense, one with a definite tone. The story is based on the the tragic events of a real life exorcism performed in a rural Australian community in the early 90's. Ron, (played by Dan Ewing) is a devout presbyterian, who believes his wife (played by Georgia Eyers) is showing signs of demonic possession. Slowly but surely the film ramps up the tension. The acting is fairly spot on with Georgia Eyers and Rosie Traynor personal standouts. It's genre blending approach to the subject matter is quite novel and kept me intrigued right up to the brutal climax.

NOT SCARY EMOTIONLESS FILM
movieguy30009 October 2023
I wanted to like this so much, it started off great but then after about 30 min it got annoying especially because 90 percent of the film takes place during the daytime which is NOT SCARY - somebody tell the director that.

I know they were trying to NOT be full Hollywood but this is a failure as they DID try and sell the film as a supernatural horror - just see the poster and the trailer.

The cinematography ois great, the color grade, the production design, music, vfx and loactions are all fantastic.

The ensemble supporting actors are good, but Dan Ewing is Not a strong actor and the guy playing the exorcist priest so young and inexperienced its not plausible to be a Vatican approved exorcist. The actor plays him arrogant and pompous, so you dislike him as a character.

At one point no one is watching the girl and she gets away and there are like 20 people in the house - c'mon suspension of disbelief?

I wanted to like this m but it didn't MORE, not so much Hollywood but even a true story needs amping.

This didn't evoke any emotions from me, not fear or anxiety, or keeping me on the edge of my seat, its forgettable and not executed. Correctly.

I really wanted to like this but the screenplay was obviously not written well.

A very decent film
Spaceship5524 October 2023
Watched via AACTA TV. An average film, pretty different in terms of Australian horrors. The main actress does a good job, Dan Ewing less so. I have to say the cinematography and VFX is excellent. The film is definitely not scary but the premise is interesting - based on true events in rural Australia (which sets a great scene for the film) It's more of a drama. The pacing was good and overall it's an easy and engaging watch. The score is also fantastic, it's definitely not a blood and guts type horror and doesn't rely on cheap scares and thrills. I think this film is certainly worth a watch for horror and non-horror fans alike!

Ultimately just a stereotypical exorcism movie...
paul_haakonsen20 January 2024
Stumbling upon the 2023 movie "Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism" by random chance here in 2024, of course I opted to sit down and watch it, since it was a horror movie that I hadn't already seen. Plus, the fact that it was an exorcism movie of sorts just helped to sweeten the deal, really.

Writer Alexander Angliss-Wilson and director Nick Kozakis had every opportunity to entertain and bedazzle me with this 2023 movie, as I had zero idea what I was in for, and thus also no expectations. However, I have to say that they only managed to muster what was a fairly generic and stereotypical exorcism movie. So yeah, you're not in for anything grand here. And if you enjoy movies about exorcisms, then "Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism" wasn't an outstanding movie.

I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress in the movie. And that is something that I definitely do enjoy when I sit down to watch something. And while the actors and actresses in "Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism" really didn't have much to work with in terms of script, character gallery and dialogue, then the performances were actually fair enough.

For me, then "Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism" was a fairly bland and forgettable exorcism movie. And while I did manage to sit through all 91 minutes of it, I was only slightly entertained. This is hardly a movie that will grace my screen a second time. Nor is it a movie that I would recommend for horror fans to rush out and get to watch.

My rating of "Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism" lands on a very generous three out of ten stars.

A Cliche, But Competent, Exorcism Film.
meddlecore30 November 2023
A woman suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder- after having lost her baby- is subject to the whims of a group of extreme religious zealots, by her husband, in an attempt to cure her.

The cult-like group ascribes to pretty much every far right conspiracy imaginable.

And they specialize in exorcisms.

What makes this film interesting, is that it doesn't start out with a particularly anti-science, nor anti-religion angle.

Medical help was working for the afflicted woman, prior to being forced off her meds by her fundamentalist husband.

However, once off...it does seem like she was actually possessed by demons.

As she starts to manifest the cliche symptoms you'd expect to see in a case deemed to warrant an exorcism.

Though, the exorcist they hire undertakes a specific brand of exorcism that is relatively extreme, to say the least.

He deems her case one of infestation, as opposed to possession.

Claiming there are multiple entities that have taken up residence in her psyche.

So they feel they must resort to especially extreme tactics, in order to free her from her torment.

Ultimately leading to the brutal twist, and conclusion, of the film.

It differs from other exorcism films, like, for example, Exorcist: Believer, in that it lacks a supernatural element.

But that doesn't make it any less creepy.

Which is why I actually found myself enjoying this film more than I did Believer.

Because of the air of realism it exudes.

Which makes you confront the reality that it is not the afflicted who are "Godless".

What makes it even more effective, is that this tale is based on a real case, from Melbourne, Australia, in 1993.

Thus making it as much of a true crime film, as it is a horror.

Which explains why it has such a made-for-tv feel to it.

Despite decent performances from a majority of the actors (less the exorcist...who is a bit over the top).

In the end...it's a cliche, but competent exorcist film.

But nothing particularly great.

And should be approached as a biopic, more than a pure horror.

This isn't an Exorcism movie...(Not really)
movieguysreviews1 April 2023
#OVERLOOK23 This isn't an Exorcism movie...Not really.

All the trappings are there; a poor young female afflicted, cult like religious members, demonic imagery and of-course the exorcist themself. However, the film follows a narrative different from what we have come to expect from a studio style horror.

It's expectingly dark, brooding and horrific; But in director Nick Kozakis's hands, he has taken what might seem like a familiar tale and made it nuanced and gripping. It's more akin to a gritty drama from someone like fellow Australian Justin Kurzel (Nitram) - Proving itself more drama than a b-grade horror (like the title may suggest)

Aided by an impressive performance by actress Georgia Eyers who manages to convey so much with her eyes even when she's not talking. Cinematographer Carl Allison pulls off beguiling imagery; his use of shadow, light and dark does so much to convey a sense of foreboding and tension.

This is the most beautiful Exorcism movie you've ever seen-even if it's not really an 'exorcism movie' at all.

straight telling
SnoopyStyle7 November 2023
Lara Levonde (Georgia Eyers) is struggling with hallucinations and sleepwalking. Her religious controlling husband Ron Levonde (Dan Ewing) does not believe in medical science and demands only religious help. Their church led by charismatic Daniel James King (Tim Pocock) advocates faith healing over modern science.

Right from the start, I am both intrigued and repulsed by this movie. Lara is so passive that it infuriated me. It is still intriguing as a premise, but I was expecting some dramatic turns. In the end, the straight forward story leaves me cold. Maybe if this is based on a true story, do a documentary.

Truly Godless!
Moviereviewer8720 July 2023
So I watched this last night and it has been stuck in my head pretty much all day. If you don't know this is inspired by a true story. It's also not a horror film! I hate that this is marked as a horror film. I was disturbed and very much sad by the end of the film. This is a perfect example of when a radical religion goes to far. I say radical because there are different types of Christianity. I was raised in a Southern Baptist Church and there is no way anyone would have condoned or thought that this was okay in the way this was handled. The sad part is I looked up and read the true story which IMO was far worse. I truly felt for Lara. Trauma is very misunderstood. It can cause worse mental illness if left untreated. I feel the secret which is unveiled closer to the end of the film was much more gutwrenching than I ever saw coming. I saw where the film was going once it got closer to the end and I didn't want too. From a technical aspect the film is stunning. The director does a beautiful job building up tension, and immediately sets up a story and lets you feel the dread* . The acting is wonderful. You feel for Lara, your frustrated with Ron as he makes decisions for his wife and you almost hate him but know he's just frustrated. Pretty much anyone from "The Church" ( if that's what you can even call this religious group) you immediately know something is quite off about all of them. The only happiness that is shown in this entire film is during the flashback to what happened that caused all this mess. During these scenes I felt deeply for Laura again because you can see the happiness in her life and how fast in a glimpse of a moment it's all taken away.

For anyone religious I encourage you to see this.

For anyone who likes true crime I encourage you to see it. It will make you think!

Praise the Lord
billcr1215 March 2024
When I see "based on a true story" at the start of a film, I wonder how much actually happened. Lara is a young housewife with mental problems and we see her with her husband at the office of a psychiatrist with some unexplained issues which are not disclosed until much later in the movie.

The background music is overwhelming and, when combined with Australian accents in frequent mumblecore mode, I was frustrated while attempting to understand the dialogue.

The final act is much better than the rest of the tedious story and the conclusion was a shock to this viewer. Religious fanaticism is the main message and after looking up what happened to the real life "Lara" (Joan Vollmer), a better film could have been made.

Not a Halloween movie
wbagot129 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
How come the same 2 reviews are printed over and over with just slight word changes ... and of course using different account names?

Since it keeps bringing up people involved in the picture as savants in their field, I can only assume the reviewers were involved in the picture.

While that makes it seem like everyone believed it was a cinematic masterpiece, the 5.7 overall rating paints a different picture.

It follows the path everyone expects if you realize it's not a horror story at all but rather based on a real episode that happened 30 years ago in Australia. A broken-down ghost town setting and a health system that failed by letting out a woman with extreme bizarre behaviors led to a cult being called in for an exorcism that had never actually performed an exorcism. You can guess the results.

Does it make for an interesting movie? Well a 5 or so, and a lot of disappointed people who thought they were getting something more.

"Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism" should have been marketed as a drama from the beginning, not a horror film, and it completely fails to be a good production.
jp_915 May 2024
"Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism" is a poor film in all aspects, it tells a story based on real events but the director does not know what approach to give it, moving between a cheap drama with a few ineffective horror scenes. Obviously the film is a drama, but it fails to show itself as such and by also being classified as a horror film it achieves a terrible result. The cinematography is conventional, the sound design is not effective and the performances are weak, with only Madeline Claire French standing out in a supporting role with few minutes on screen. The costume design and setting are very bad, the story takes place in 1994 but the costumes look current, trying to emulate nineties fashion without success, and the setting fails completely to take us back to the '90s, all the furniture seems to be an exhibition from an antique store and does not provide the nineties style at any time. The theme of religious fanaticism could have been shown on screen in a realistic and crude way, but everything was left at a bad cinematic level. "Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism" should have been marketed as a drama from the beginning, not a horror film, and it completely fails to be a good production.

Right from the jump, GODLESS sets a dark and unsettling tone.
christinehanley3 April 2023
Right from the jump, GODLESS sets a dark and unsettling tone. As the film progresses, the tension and suspense only continue to build, culminating in an unforgettable climax.

One of the standout elements of the film is Georgia Eyers' performance as Lara. She delivers a stunning and convincing performance that's both chilling and captivating. Dan Ewing (Love and Monsters) also delivers a solid performance as Ron, the husband determined to save his wife from the demonic presence that he believes has taken hold of her. While his character is not quite as fleshed out as Lara's, Ewing still manages to convey the desperation and determination of a man on a mission. His chemistry with Eyers is palpable, and their performances together add depth and complexity to their relationship.

Director Nick Kozakis does a great job of building tension and creating a sense of dread throughout the film. His use of lighting, camera angles, and sound design all contribute to the film's creepy and unsettling atmosphere. Kozakis is a talented director, and it's clear that he's one to watch in the future. Alexander Angliss-Wilson's script is also a highlight of the film. While the story may sound like a familiar one, Wilson adds enough unique elements to keep the audience engaged and on the edge of their seats. The dialogue is sharp and effective, (Though non-Australian audiences may struggle with understanding some words). In terms of its technical elements, the film's cinematography and sound design are both exceptional. The cinematography is moody and atmospheric, and it perfectly captures the dark and ominous tone of the film. The sound design is also outstanding, with eerie sounds and music that add to the horror elements of the film.

It's rare to find a horror film that is both genuinely terrifying and well-crafted, but Godless manages to achieve both. This is a film that will stay with you long after the credits have rolled.

Mental illness demon
There was something really quite enticing and engaging about this one. I think it was the atmospheric nature they created here and the general overall vibe. It was spooky and intriguing. Unfortunately I don't know if it ever really hit its stride or had a really powerful "bang" about it.

Maybe they stuck too closely to the real life events or they just missed out on the opportunity, but I didn't walk away from this feeling like anything particularly exciting or stimulating happened. The acting was a little hit or miss as well. I enjoyed the lead girls performance but didn't love the husband or the exorcist.

Generally this was an interesting and entertaining movie. I wanted to round up with this one but I don't think it quite got there... 5.5 rounding down to a 5. Would still recommend for a spooky time.

Exceptionally powerful film.
angelreyeswashere21 March 2023
One of the best exorcism movies in my opinion because it has an immersive plot that actually invokes the viewers emotions and the movie is not just there for the jump scares. It was very well done and I liked the psychological horror in it too.

A film that gets the job done of creating emotionally enriched characters and a compelling themes. There are quality performances all around from a diverse cast, ranging from Eyers to Ewing, while deeply studying the manipulation of relationships with wonderful tension. I was absolutely blown away by how heavy this movie was. It sucks the breath right out of you, and never really let's you get it back.

Not your typical horror
The film's premise makes you think you're getting into a typical studio horror film, however, Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism is surprisingly well-directed and written, following the based on a true premise of an Australian exorcism. Director Nick Kozakis showcases plenty of traditional visual and storytelling talent but isn't afraid to get Into the grit and nuance of moments, and the film benefits greatly from that approach. Its often uncompromising approach takes what might be a more standard spooky affair and turns it into one you won't soon forget. Complete with the punchiest sound design imaginable, some strong lead performances, and inventive camera work, Godless makes for quite an intense picture.

I don't like horror - and I adore this film
hhkpwhjrmy12 April 2023
I have never liked horror, scary or psychological movies of any kind, but some friends were watching it and I kind of had to.

The fact it's inspired by true events is something that got me from the start.

Godless had me from start to finish, and this film made me understand why horror/thriller movies are so popular.

It's not horror.

It's not thriller.

It's not crime.

It's not psychological.

It's all of them moulded together perfectly in a way that I still don't understand and can't wait to watch again.

This is easily one of my favorite films and the fact that I can say that about a thriller/horror film is something I never thought I would. 20/10.

Blends true-crime and horror in this Australian indie
carolanthony2 April 2023
@OverlookFilmFestival (Encore screening)

One of the hurdles that horror films need to clear is is keeping the viewer engaged when it's not "fright time" . That bar proves insurmountably high in "Godless," a confident if unpersuasive story about an exorcism sought out by a husband for his wife after she exhibits strange behavior.

Director Kozakis knows his way around visual language carefully constructing its confined spaces to create a sense of unease that shifts into stifling claustrophobia as the film descends into the madness of the situation.

Standout performances by lead Georgia Eyers and Dan Ewing who showcases a noteworthy portrayal of a quintessential flawed and toxic husband.

I'm sure this will not appeal to all due to its graphic nature but I found it thoroughly engaging and quite a tense experience.

*Warning: may leave you a little distraught and angry.

Haunting psychological horror
travreviews1 April 2023
"GODLESS - The Eastfield Exorcism" is a hauntingly horrific depiction of a real life exorcism. It's a bleak and brutal endurance test for audiences; but for those wiling to persevere, it will prove to be a powerful viewing experience.

A debut for director Nick Kozakis who is impressively adapt at world-building and tension. It's a grim, gritty and gripping story, a niche Australian filmmakers seam to relish in (Rover, The Boys and almost everything Justin Kurzel has made)

Solid ensemble performances with a standout display by Georgia Eyers as the central character "Lara"

I thought I was walking into a typical horror movie but the film quickly establishes itself more as a psychological drama; building a tone that something is boiling under the surface.

The film finds it's stride by the end of the first act and progressively applies the accelerator. We know where the films going, but it doesn't make the ending any less harrowing.

Brilliant performance.

Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism is a mesmerizing supernatural thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. With its intriguing storyline, impressive performances, and the masterful direction of Nick Kozakis, this movie easily earns its well-deserved rating.

First and foremost, the director's vision shines through every frame of Godless, immersing the audience in a world filled with palpable tension and eerie atmosphere. Their meticulous attention to detail creates a seamless blend of suspense and horror, making each scene a captivating experience.

The plot itself is refreshingly original, taking the real life abuse of exorcism subgenre to new heights. Instead of relying on predictable tropes, Godless delves deep into the characters' psyches, exploring their fears, doubts, and vulnerabilities. This added layer of emotional depth adds resonance to the terrifying events unfolding on screen.

Based on the true story, the performances in Godless are outstanding across the board. The talented ensemble cast delivers nuanced and believable portrayals, bringing the characters to life with conviction. Each actor contributes to the overall sense of unease, making it easy for the audience to invest in their struggles.

Furthermore, the film's technical aspects are top-notch. The cinematography captures the haunting beauty of Australia, setting a gloomy and foreboding tone that perfectly complements the narrative. The sound design and score add another layer of tension, effectively enhancing the suspenseful moments and heightening the overall viewing experience.

In conclusion, the movie is a remarkable real life supernatural thriller that showcases the positive director's prowess in creating an immersive and chilling cinematic experience. If you're a fan of the genre or simply enjoy thought-provoking and well-crafted films, this is one you won't want to miss. Prepare to be captivated, frightened, and dismayed by this gem of a movie.

Makes you think
hxquinn1 July 2023
If you only want a cliché horror that relies on sex, gore, and jump scares, you'll be disappointed.

Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism is grounded by brilliant performances from both Georgia Eyers (the possessed - or is she?) and Tim Lock (the exorcist). Based on true events and inspired by multiple real exorcisms, this film focuses more on the process and consequences for the people involved and raises questions about what's right.

There is very little blood and gore, which makes it more impactful in the few instances it occurs. There is also a mystery element and some clever foreshadowing. While all the important things are explained, it's ultimately left up to the audience to decide what they believe.

A beautifully shot and overall well executed film recommended to fans of psychological horror.

It's horror, it's thriller, it's scary. Just...from a different viewpoint.
nickel19768 September 2023
I started this film with popcorn, waiting for the bibles and crosses to come out. I watched a plot that was all too familiar, a young woman exhibiting extremely odd and inconsistent behavior. I watched her loved ones - deeply Christian, but not Catholic - question the medical professionals that the woman was using for treatment. I watched her get steered into an exorcism. I watched the oddly confident exorcist come and prep for removing her demons. And then...

I got suspicious. And then peeved. And then frustrated.

I knew this story was based on something that had happened once in real life, so I paused the film and read the story. The further I got into the story, the more my frustration turned into fury.

As the movie rolled on, the anger turned into wide gaping mouth open shock and then to deep, deep despair. I couldn't stop the tears. They kept falling until the end of the film.

I feel raw as I write this. The film doesn't really suggest anything to the viewer that's fundamentally different from what the real life events did. It's really not much more than an account of a terrible, horrific event that spreads the word to the world about what can happen if... An advertisement. For what? Well, watch the film.

This one is going to stay with me for quite awhile.
