How to become a Leading Lady
pauluswiggus21 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A young German actress attempts to track down an American film director (presumably based on Hartley) in Berlin, believing she can become his next leading lady. After travelling to several locations, she eventually discovers that he has returned to the U. S. She then write to him, attempting to convince him to return to BeIN to make a "Great German Film", with her as the star. He replies, saying she should follow her dreams but he has quit filmmaking to import European windows. Perplexed, the actress considers the windows, before heading off to Paris to peruse her acting career.

More the most Hartley shorts, the quirky, deadpan humour of his early features is present here. You could easily imagine a longer film exploring the relationship between the naive, ambitious actress and the failed director, turned window importer. Sadly, this film is only a glimpse, but another interesting experiment from Hartley.
