Exclusive: CBS won’t be heading back into the Panamanian jungle.
Deadline understands that celebrity-competition series Beyond the Edge has been canceled after one season.
The show, which premiered in March 2022 and ran through May, followed Survivor and was in a slot that previously featured Tough as Nails and The Amazing Race, but it struggled to break out.

The series featured nine celebrities who traded their worlds of luxury to live in the dangerous jungles of Panama for two weeks — testing whether they have the grit to withstand torrential downpours, scorching heat and deadly wildlife. There wasn’t any judges or eliminations – instead, each celebrity had to rely on their inner fortitude, physical ability and courage and have faith in their teammates to endure in the wild.
For each day they lasted and every challenge they won with their team, the celebrities raised more money for their charities.

No one would argue that broadcast TV is booming in 2022, but on a show by show basis, things don’t look quite as bleak as they did a year ago.
Whereas in 2020-21, only one network series — The CW’s All American — grew both its total audience and adults 18-49 rating, several shows managed the feat in the 2021-22 season, according to Nielsen’s final seven-day ratings for the season. The gainers were led by the top two shows on TV, NBC’s Sunday Night Football (18 million viewers, 5.0 rating in 18-49) and Fox’s Thursday Night Football (15.4 million, 4.3), which posted decent improvements in both measures.
The Monday edition of American Idol (6.99 million viewers, 1.0 in 18-49) and several other sports franchises, including ABC’s Saturday college football and NBA showcases, also had gains in both viewers and the key ad demographic. NBC’s Law...

Comedies and dramas traditionally make up a large portion of the broadcast TV landscape between September and May, but networks don’t deny the continuous draw of hit reality TV and competition shows. Each season, ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox, the so-called “Big 4” broadcasters, bring back old staples and add in new unscripted content in hopes of topping each other outside of their sitcoms and procedurals.
While there could always be slight adjustments to season-long averages by the end of the traditional broadcast season in a few weeks, Variety has gathered Nielsen’s “most current” data through May 8 to rank ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox’s highest and lowest-rated unscripted series among adults 18-49.
Below are the lists, which count 33 completed weeks of the soon-ending season. These ratings are averages for the unscripted shows’ respective seasons and based on a week’s worth of delayed viewing, where available. The lists...

Rudy Giuliani’s long-awaited reveal on The Masked Singer finally aired on Fox. However, the controversial unmasking didn’t seem to pay off, with the singing series hitting season lows on Wednesday.
Per fast affiliates, the latest and most-anticipated episode of The Masked Singer earned a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demo and 3.59 million viewers. As Deadline revealed exclusively in February, Giuliani’s reveal on the popular Fox series prompted judge Ken Jeong to leave the stage in protest. Read more about Wednesday’s reveal here.

Hollywood Week has arrived on “American Idol,” which marks its 20th year on air this season. For that reason, several familiar faces are returning to the show tonight as mentors during Hollywood Week.
Among the “Idol” alums reporting for duty on tonight’s episode, which was filmed in December, are: Season 7 winner David Cook, Season 10 runner-up Lauren Alaina, Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard, Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze, Season 10 second runner-up Haley Reinhart and Season 19 champ Chayce Beckham.
“I always enjoy those opportunities,” says Cook, who mentored in the past on the show’s pre-abc days and is always willing to assist up and coming artists. “It’s such a unique experience to go through. And maybe I can help some of these kids navigate it a little easier.”

“Survivor” battled its way to the top on Wednesday, easily taking the title of primetime’s highest-rated and most-watched show. But CBS’ ho-hum ratings the rest of the night kept the network from earning the overall highest average. That went to Fox, which was aided by a 0.7 rating for “The Masked Singer.” The CW’s “Flash” and “Kung Fu” both saw their highest viewership numbers since December 2021. “Flash” drew about a 23% increase in viewers, while “Kung Fu” earned a significant increase of around 37%. Fox was first in ratings with a 0.6 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic. CBS came in first in total viewers with an average of 3.4 million, according to official numbers. CBS was second in ratings with a 0.5. NBC was second in total viewers with 3.3 million. On CBS, “Survivor” raked in a 0.8 rating and 5.4 million total viewers at 8 p.m. At 9, “Beyond the Edge” fell to a 0.4 rating and 2.8 million total viewers.

It was a decent night for The CW thanks to a surge in the ratings for a pair of freshly renewed dramas.
The Flash secured 722,000 total viewers and a 0.2 rating, showcasing growth in viewers of almost 30%.
Kung Fu soared 35% to 633,000 viewers and a 0.1 rating, posting a season high in viewers for the Olivia Ling-led drama.
The CW renewed both shows earlier this week, alongside five other shows.
Over on CBS, Good Sam's One Tree Hill reunion failed to move the needle much in the ratings.
The freshman drama managed just 2.1 million viewers and a 0.2 rating.
Survivor started the night off for CBS with 5.2 million viewers and a 0.8 rating, while week two of Beyond the Edge managed 2.9 million viewers and a 0.4 rating.
The retention from Survivor is not good, but a 0.4 is not that bad for a cheap reality series.

With NBC’s Chicago slate taking a break for repeats, CBS’ Survivor was the big winner of Wednesday primetime.
In fast nationals, the latest episode of the CBS survival competition series earned the night’s highest demo rating and most viewers. Survivor was steady from the previous week and earned a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demo and 5.19 million viewers on Wednesday. Survivor‘s stable showing, and NBC’s option to air repeats, gave CBS newcomer Beyond The Edge a nice boost rising in demo rating from its premiere. CBS then brought its night to a close with Good Sam at the bottom of the 10 p .m. hour.
Fox nabbed the second-highest demo rating of the evening with The Masked Singer, which also matched the previous Wednesday. New series Domino Masters followed also steady from the previous week.
ABC’s Wednesday slate was also pretty consistent with the week before.

It’s not I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here — but it sure is close. CBS on Wednesday debuted Beyond the Edge, a new reality show from Renegade (Naked and Afraid) that drops nine celebrities into the jungles of Panama to compete in challenges while earning cash for their charities (and personal pocketbooks).
Even before its debut, CBS executives privately marveled at how the show was “really killing” its participants — a rather sobering nod to the nasty elements faced by former NBC champ Metta World Peace, former NFL linebacker Ray Lewis, American Idol alum Lauren Alaina, actress Jodie Sweetin (Full House), supermodel Paulina Porizkova, former NFL player and coach Mike Singletary, country artist Craig Morgan, former Bachelor Colton Underwood and The Real Housewives of New York City’s Eboni K. Williams.

Season 26 of The Bachelor concluded Tuesday with a finale twist that brought the ABC series to the top of primetime.
The unexpected engagement-less ending to bachelor Clayton Echard’s journey for love earned a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.43 million viewers last night, per Nielsen fast affiliates. The night’s highest-rated program, The Bachelor was up from its premiere in January but slightly down from the previous finale in March. The season, defined by former contestant Shanae’s mind games and “Shrimpgate,” concluded with updates on Susie and Clayton’s relationship and new beginnings for Rachel and Gabby.

CBS’ ‘Beyond the Edge’ Sent Celebrities to the Jungle — And Producers Were Terrified They’d All Quit
CBS and the producers behind the network’s new reality series “Beyond the Edge” were bracing for their celebrity cast to mutiny. They even had contingency plans in place, just in case their stars decided to give up in the face of grueling conditions.
“I remember in the middle of production, saying on multiple occasions, ‘I can’t believe they’re still out there,’” says CBS alternative series senior VP Mitch Graham. “You never know in a new format, what you’re going to get. We had an eight-episode order in place. My biggest concern was whether or not people would stick with it, and whether we could actually complete a series order.”
Created and produced by Renegade, the company behind Discovery’s long-running smash “Naked and Afraid”, “Beyond the Edge” features nine celebs roughing it on an island in Panama, teaming up and competing in challenges to earn money for their designated charities.

It’s all for charity, but that doesn’t mean any part of the experience is easy. “I don’t think you’ve ever seen celebrities in a limelight like this before,” says executive producer Greg Goldman.
