Dutch directorial duo Steffan Haars and Flip Van Der Kuil’s English-language debut, Krazy House, polarized Sundance audiences this year for its over-the-top lampooning of the ’90s sitcom era. Per Deadline, WTFilms has boarded international sales rights on the divisive horror-comedy.

“When Russian workers in Bernie’s house turn out to be wanted criminals, Bernie has to man up and save his ’90s sitcom family.”
Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) stars as the bumbling Bernie Christian alongside Alicia Silverstone (Perpetrator) as his beleaguered wife Eva. The cast also includes Jan Bijvoet, Gaite Jansen, Walt Klink and Kevin Connolly.
The ’90s sitcom setup quickly derails when a trio of Russian criminals arrive; shocking violence and chaos ensues.
The movie debuted in Sundance’s The Midnights section and then made its European premiere in Rotterdam’s Limelight section this weekend.

Exclusive: WTFilms has snapped up international sales rights for Dutch directorial duo Steffan Haars and Flip Van Der Kuil’s English-language debut Krazy House following its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
The gory comedy-horror, putting a fresh spin on the family sitcoms of the 1990s, co-stars Nick Frost as meek-mannered, bumbling homemaker Bernie opposite Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) as his stressed-out, breadwinner wife.
Their humdrum existence is upended by the arrival of Russian mobsters on the doorstep posing as maintenance men. Bernie is forced to man-up in defense of his family as their home descends into blood-splattered chaos and violence.
The movie debuted in Sundance’s Midnights section and made its European premiere in Rotterdam’s Limelight section over the past weekend.

Remember that scene in Natural Born Killers in which the Juliette Lewis character enters a Married… with Children-style sitcom, with Rodney Dangerfield playing her dad? Imagine a whole movie based on that concept, add tons of violence and gore — not to mention gags about Christ and Catholicism, a tray-full of crystal meth and, in one late sequence, a dog that gets decapitated by a shotgun blast — and you’ll get an idea of what’s in store while watching the Sundance Midnight selection, Krazy House.
As over-the-top as that already sounds, the film is even more exhausting to sit through — like a hard-r Saturday Night Live sketch that’s been taken way too far, to the point you’re just hoping that it stops. Relentless and off-putting, the English-language debut of Dutch hitmakers Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil is unlikely to land a wide audience in the U.

The definition of satire is flexible, but not quite flexible enough to accommodate “Krazy House.” This bloody, anarchic hand grenade of a film is just straight-up blasphemous, opening with a brushed-aluminum shot of a cop plugging a nun full of bullets and escalating from there. Like an Adult Swim infomercial directed by black-metal teenagers, the latest feature from Dutch comedy duo Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil takes sneering pleasure in giving the middle finger to God in hyper-violent, absurdist fashion.
The Adult Swim bit is baked into the premise of the movie, which takes place entirely within the confines of a sound stage reminiscent of the set from “Married…With Children.” The sitcom-within-the-film is called, naturally, “Krazy House.” It revolves around the Christian family, which is composed of standard-issue archetypes: bucktoothed bumbler Bernie (Nick Frost); his wife Eva (Alicia Silverstone), who’s naturally way out of his league...

The Dutch comedy duo of Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil have a new project heading our way -- and it stars some pretty recognizable faces. Nick Frost has been tapped to lead the pair's first English-language feature, which is already gaining some pretty intense buzz. In a statement to Variety, Haars and van der Kuil said, "It's a dream come true working with this amazing, talented cast on our most insane movie yet." That's one hell of a claim considering these are the folks who made the cocktail of absurdity and vulgarity known as "Ron Goossens, Low Budget Stuntman."
Frost also spoke with Variety and said, "'Krazy House' has been a completely bonkers project to be a part of and I've absolutely loved every minute of it." This is also certainly quite a claim, as Nick Frost is somewhat synonymous with wild, wacky, and wonderful comedy films.

“I once thought that there were no second acts in American lives,” F. Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote, in his notes on The Last Tycoon. To which Cher Horowitz in Clueless would say: “Ugh, as if!”
Nearly 30 years after she spoke those iconic lines, we are witnessing the second act in the career of Alicia Silverstone.
Her Super Bowl ad for shopping platform Rakuten, where she slipped back into Cher’s yellow tartan skirt to recreate the Clueless debate scene, went viral (as did her first TikTok appearance, again as Cher, spoofing the “as if!” scene with her son Bear), returning Silverstone to the top of the pop culture conversation.
In the independent film world, Silverstone has never been hotter. With roles in The Lodge —the 2019 Sundance chiller from Goodnight Mommy directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz — and Jennifer Reeder’s new meta-horror film Perpetrator, which premiered in the Panorama section...

Nick Frost, Alicia Silverstone and Kevin Connolly will star in the dark comedy “Krazy House” from writers-directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil, marking the first English-language film by the duo.
Dutch Gaite Jansen, Walt Klink, Jan Bijvoet, Chris Peters and Matti Stooker round out the cast. Production on the film has just been completed in Amsterdam.
Set in the 90s, “Krazy House” is about religious homemaker Bernie (Frost) and his sitcom family. When Russian workers in Bernie’s house turn out to be wanted criminals, they make Bernie and his family tear the place up in search of some old hidden loot. Alicia Silverstone — whose latest feature Perpetrator is having its world premiere in the Berlinale — has just shot another film over the German border.
The Clueless star joined Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) and Kevin Connolly (Entourage) in the newly-announced dark comedy Krazy House, which recently wrapped production in Amsterdam. The feature marks the first English-language film from Dutch writer-director duo Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil (New Kids Turbo, Bro’s Before Ho’s, Ron Goossens: Low-Budget Stuntman), with Kaap Holland Film producing.

The sense of humor of Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil is not for everyone. The films they make are rude, shocking, incredibly insensitive and always cross at least one border too many (or outright break a taboo). Their films are also very well made, technically accomplished, and funny as hell. New Kids Turbo was their feature debut, and it had all of these things. It surprised me by how... well... how Good it was. And since then, Steffen and Flip have only grown, venturing out into adding some honest drama into the crazy antics. By now, I'm no longer blind-sided by their expertise. I'm more-or-less expecting it, and each film they make can count on me buying a ticket for it. Which is...

Here at Screen Anarchy we're big fans of directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil. The Dutch duo surprised friends and foes back in 2010 with New Kids Turbo, a cinema version of the sketch comedy troupe they were part of. The film was remarkably accomplished (see review), and excelled on a technical level. It was also a huge commercial success, thankfully paving the way for their next two films: New Kids Nitro and Bro's Before Ho's. So what have they been up to? The good news is: a new film. In Ron Goossens: Low Budget Stunt Man, the titular alcoholic stuntman (Tim Haars) loses his wife, and can only win her back by bedding the beautiful actress Bo Maerten. Hilarity and disaster follow,...

We’re nearing September, which means we’re getting close to Alamo Drafthouse’s 10th annual Fantastic Fest. The film festival held in Austin, Texas is one of the most interesting and exciting fests around. Catering to hardcore cinephiles with a little bit of an interest in the strange, Fantastic Fest features a bevy of some of the best new horror films, indie thrillers, dark comedies, and low-budget sci-fi. Last year some of the best films included at the fest were Afflicted, Borgman, Jodorowsky’s Dune, The Sacrament, Blue Ruin, Grand Piano, We Are What We Are, A Field in England, The Congress, and Big Bad Wolves. In 2011 Fantastic Fest was one of the places to see Adam Wingard’s amazing You’re Next before it was shelved until it’s official release just last year.
Now the initial lineup for the 2014 festival has been announced and as always it looks very promising.

Our favorite film festival in the world is nigh. Later next month, Austin, Texas will host hundreds of genre fans for Fantastic Fest 2014!! We have the full list which includes the Us Premiere of Tusk as well as the World Premieres of ABCs of Death 2 and Horsehead. These won’t be all the films that will play the 10th anniversary of the film festival but it would be enough if it was. Look forward to more announcement waves of programming and don’t forget to follow up with our predictions that we made last week. I have added trailers above the film titles, if available. If the trailer is not available, there will be a still above the title.

It's that time of year again, isn't it? There is no greater party on Earth for fans of genre films than Austin's annual Fantastic Fest, and ten years in, they just keep making it better. The scary thing is that Tim League isn't kidding. Fantastic Fest is special because it's much more than just movies being screened. Every day is packed with events that elevate the entire festival, and with this year taking place at the new Alamo Drafthouse on S. The Alamo Drafthouse’s Fantastic Fest has a stellar rep around these parts, and it’s not hard to see why when you consider some of the indie titles that have played there in recent years. Last year alone saw Coherence, Grand Piano and Septic Man make their world premieres, and films like Blue Ruin, Afflicted, Witching & Bitching, The Sacrament and Borgman all land in the U.S. for the first time.
This year doesn’t look to be any different, with a terrific lineup of indie titles including boatloads of promising horror. (Because deep inside even the biggest asshole, there is a romantic trying to get out ... ehm ... no wait, let me rephrase that...) The New Kids may have been disbanded after the huge successes of New Kids Turbo and New Kids Nitro, but the actors, writers, and directors behind them still exist, of course, and they are a uniquely talented bunch. What would come next? Back in March, directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil announced that their next was going to be -- surprise -- a romantic comedy. Most of the former New Kids actors would be in it too, albeit in totally different roles, and no longer as an ensemble. Fast forward to this week, and the premiere of Bro's Before...

Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil are probably best known as the directors of New Kids Turbo and New Kids Nitro, as well as being two of the actual New Kids themselves. But that was then: the New Kids have hung their mullets in the willows, and this is now. And this December, we get a new film from Steffen and Flip, outside of the chaotic universe of the New Kids: Bro's Before Ho's. We've already published some stills and a teaser in the past, but today Eyeworks published the final trailer, and here it is. Steffen and Flip have proven in the past that their talents are not so much in the originality of their jokes, but in their expertise in comedic timing...

Whenever I interview directors, for fun's sake I always try and ask if their next film will be a romantic comedy. No matter how pretentious, arty or depressing the conversation is, this tends to draw a laugh. But if today I had thrown that question at Flip van der Kuil en Steffen Haars, the two writers/directors/actors of New Kids Turbo and New Kids Nitro, the answer would simply have been, "Yes". This afternoon, production company Eyeworks revealed that Flip and Steffen will direct Bro's Before Ho's, based on their own script. And the genre is, you guessed it: romantic comedy. The story concerns videostore clerk Max and his adopted brother Jules, who are best mates. Together they spend all of their time smoking weed, getting...

Some movies are masterpieces. Some movies are utter garbage. Then there are the two New Kids movies. New Kids, the Dutch comedy series that brought to life a group of trailerpark hooligans, is back with a sequel to 2010′s New Kids Turbo. This time around, Richard, Gerrie, Rikkert, Robbie and Barrie return to stomp around their home town of Maaskantje to fart, fight and beat up dickheads. Love it or hate it, New Kids Nitro is a here and its blasting Eurodance loud enough to make your ears bleed. The success of the show relied heavily on a trotline of similar jokes that dangled in some absolutely tepid waters. There isn’t anything off limits, resulting in some pretty gnarly bits that will easily tickle and/or offend the viewer. The wormy apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in New Kids Nitro. The second wave of genre films slotted to play this year’s Fantastic Fest has been unleashed upon the masses. Among the the are two of the year’s most anticipated films, Looper and Sinister. Continue reading for the films announced and a brief plot synopsis of each… but, do so at your own risk! (The inconceivable awesomeness of Fantastic Fest may be too much for some to handle. Those unaccustomed to this level of awesomeness should refrain from indulging in such films without first consulting your physician to verify you are in fact an adult with adventurous taste and not still just a sniveling, winy brat.)

It’s hard to believe that in a month and two days that Michael & I, along with two other writers from St. Louis, will be making our annual 14 hour drive to Austin, Texas for one of our favorite things/times of the year, Fantastic Fest. This will mark my 3rd year covering the festival and Michael’s 2nd year. The press release has been released on what will be playing at the festival and I think I can honestly say that the selection feels like it might top last year. We got some more hits off our picks of what we thought might play this year as well.

The first wave of films for the Austin based film festival Fantastic Fest featured a lot of titles that caught our eye, like Dredd 3D, Cockneys Vs. Zombies, Room 237 and the original The Shining. Today, the next wave of films were announced on the Fantastic Fest website. Here is the complete list for y’all, but we’re most excited about the inclusion of Looper and Sinister:

The second wave of Fantastic Fest films is incredibly irritating. Why? Because alongside the first wave of titles, it represents the best line up in the festival’s history, and I won’t be there for the first time in years. Have no fear, because we’ll have plenty of Rejects on the ground covering every inch of film, but I will be twiddling my thumbs at home wishing I was getting drunk off of a third Guinness milkshake and watching weird movies. Looper is absolutely at the pinnacle here when it comes to anticipation, but there’s also the Cannes freak-out Holy Motors and Sinister, the newest film from Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson. Plus, the Fantastic Fest faithful can see a follow-up to New Kids Turbo and the ambitious horror short anthology The ABCs of Death, birthed outside of a dumpster right behind the Alamo Drafthouse. There...

An adolescent’s sixteenth birthday marks a turning point in life when maturation occurs at a much more rapid pace and the teenager begins to be faced with difficult and important decisions that will shape their future. The same can be said of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, set to kick off its sixteenth edition tomorrow: its Super Sweet Sixteen promises to be nothing if not interesting. That’s not to say that the main focus of North America’s largest genre film festival is changing; in fact, between prolific director Takashi Miike’s festival opener For Love’s Sake – fresh from Cannes and having its North American premiere – and the Canadian premiere of animation studio Laika’s Paranorman, which closes the fest three weeks later, filmgoers will have a whopping 160 films from around the world to choose from. Sitges eat your heart out.

(See how the title of the article is noticeably more offensive than the one I did for its prequel? Well...) One of the biggest surprises moviewise last year was "New Kids Turbo", a full-length Dutch feature describing the chaos surrounding five anti-social characters from a series of short television sketches. That people tried to cash in on the popularity of these comedians wasn't surprising but the quality of the end product was: the film was absolutely frigging hilarious and far better made than expected beforehand. You can read my full review (this part of the sentence is a link) for a full account but rest assured I was mighty impressed, especially since it was a first full-length feature effort for directors Steffen Haars and Flip...

There's something brewing in the Netherlands. Perhaps emboldened by the recent success of titles like Sint and New Kids Turbo the Dutch film industry is embracing genre oriented fare in a way they haven't in recent memory. There's the second New Kids film coming soon, of course, and Sint director Dick Maas will return to screens with Quiz while director Peter Kuijpers will soon turn in ultra dark drama Manslaughter. And now here comes writer-director Max Porcelijn with Plan C.Ronald Plasmeyer (Ruben Van Der Meer) is a small-time Amsterdam detective, struggling with financial problems because of his gambling habit. When the Chinese crime boss Hao threatens Ronald's ex-wife and son to get his money back, Ronald comes up with a plan that will solve...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? The Boy Mir: Ten Years In Afghanistan Trailer Put this on my list of documentaries about the wars in the Middle East that I want to check out.

Another Fantastic Fest is in the books and the festival once again lived up to its name. For eight straight days I slept little, met friends, ate, drank and watched an inhuman amount of crazy genre movies. Now that it’s over, it’s time to not only rank the best films I saw at the festival, but point out a few trends that defined Fantastic Fest 2011. Before we get to the lists, I feel it imperative to embed this video. Well, after five days of rigorous screenings, and countless sleepless nights, the festival’s 70+ films and shorts have been narrowed down to but a select few which have been chosen as winners for this year’s Fantastic Fest Awards!
Winning a Fantastic Fest award not only means your work has a better shot of surviving past the festival, but it also means that you as a filmmaker, are to be faced with a somewhat serious decision. Just because you’ve won an award, doesn’t necessarily mean you get to keep it. A time honored festival tradition dictates that possession of the award is ultimately dependent on your ability to chug a beer from said award, and for big winners like Simon Barrett who penned story for the film You’re Next (winner of 4 awards), this means quite a few pints! So be sure to keep an eye out for...

Acquired by Lionsgate and pulled from all but one of its screenings at the festival, the crowd-pleasing horror-comedy "You're Next" still killed at the Fantastic Fest 2011 Awards. The story of a couple trapped in a remote house by crazed animal-mask-wearing killers won four awards: Best Horror Feature, Best Director (Adam Wingard), Best Screenplay (Simon Barrett), and Best Actress (Sharni Vinson). Unofficially, it also won my award for Best Defacement of the Alamo Drafthouse. Look for this one from Lionsgate, probably sometime late in 2012.
The other big winner of the night was "Bullhead," which made a huge splash in the Amd & Dell Next Wave Spotlight Competition devoted to emerging filmmakers. The dark character study of a steroid-taking Mafia enforcer won Best Picture, Best Director (Michael R. Roskam), and Best Actor (Matthias Schoenaerts). According to IMDb, the film does not yet have a Us distributor.
Choosing the winners in any of the categories couldn't be easy.

I'd be willing to be a very small percentage of you have heard of either New Kids Turbo or Penumbra, which makes sense as neither is from a huge hot bed of film. New Kids Turbo is hard-r rated, gross out comedy from the Netherlands based on a successful sketch TV show and Penumbra is an Argentinian film about a real estate deal gone horribly, horribly wrong. So why should you care about these films? Besides the obvious - they both made the cut to screen at Fantastic Fest 2011 - New Kids Turbo is the Avatar of its country, one of the most successful films in Dutch box office history. As for Penumbra, its intriguing premise unfortunately doesn't build to a very satisfying conclusion. Read more after the break.
