A horrible crime, but far from a horrible movie

"Sie hat es verdient" or "She Deserved It" is a German 90-minute movie from 2010 that was a small screen release back then. it was written and directed by experienced filmmaker Thomas Stiller and is among his most known career efforts. The cast includes actually quite a few names that German film buffs will recognize (or their faces). These would be Fries (the MVP), Goeske, Ferres, Feifel, Mommsen, Tkotsch, Ronstedt... I really liked Fries in other stuff I have seen her so far and I think she is one of the best German actors of her generation. Here she adds another nice performance to her body of work and proves that she can to brutal and ruthless pretty well. This is the story of three teenagers who commit an act of indescribable brutality when one girl dares to hit on the boyfriend of another girl. The latter two actually belong to the trio. We find out what happened exactly at the very same time as we watch what happened since the most violent of the three was imprisoned and has a talk with the victim's mother. Of course, this kind of talk really would not be realistic in real life, but lets just see it as a kind of fiction. I think the action was tense and the plot was well-written most of the times. Attempts at showing us how young people talk today got occasionally wrong (the Santa / Easter Eggs moment for example), but other than that the movie feels authentic and relevant. The lead performance is not the only reason here as the cast all do a decent job. I personally was impressed by Veronica Ferres, who is usually a very limited actress, but had some good moments here. "Good" for her standards I mean with that. Nothing extraordinary. Sure the film sometimes relies on pretty simple and baity references like the puppy or the violent sex scene, but even these make sense in the overall picture and I cannot say I didn't enjoy watching these two for example. As a whole, this was a good watch. Worthy of a big screen release for sure and I give it a thumbs-up recommending you to check it out. It's worth spending 1.5 hours.
