The story of Septimius Severus, a Roman soldier and consul born in Leptis Magna in Libya, who had himself declared Roman emperor after killing the Praetorian Guard who had murdered the previous title-holder Pertinax. Some fifteen years later in 207 A.D. when he was in his early sixties and so unwell that he needed to be carried in a litter,he marched a huge Roman army into Scotland, along with reluctant son Caracalla,in order to subdue the Scots. However the Romans suffered heavy losses due to the locals' guerilla tactics and had to retreat, Severus dying in York in 211 A.D. This unsuccessful invasion was instrumental in forging the Scots' feeling of independence from South of the border.
