Los Angeles, May 18 (Ians/Efe) Under the baton of Placido Domingo, acclaimed Chilean writer Isabel Allende's short story "Una Venganza" ("An Act of Vengeance") emerges from the printed page as the opera "Dulce Rosa", a production with a Latin heart and Greek tragedy in its soul that premiered Friday in Los Angeles.
"Dulce Rosa" is a further effort by the L.A. Opera, directed by Domingo, to bring lyric opera to a wider audience.
"We're always looking to create new works," the Spanish tenor told Efe.
Domingo got behind the adaptation of "Una Venganza" when the idea was proposed to him by composer Lee Holdridge and librettist Richard Sparks, to whom Allende gave the go-ahead years ago without really expecting anything.

Hollywood often produces two films on one subject, but the six movies based on the Battle of Çanakkale are a sign of a healthy domestic market for Turkish products
Maybe one sign of a fully matured film industry is when it's capable of spewing out an Olympus Has Fallen and a White House Down at the same time – coinciding films with identical subjects. One of those little zeitgeist clots that suggest creative minds running in parallel, in a highly evolved community driven by the relentless background hum of close competition – and also, all those scripts passing between studios, with ample opportunities for intellectual-property theft. Mostly, these weird convergences seem to come in pairs: Deep Impact and Armageddon, A Bug's Life and Antz, and so on.
So what does it say about the emerging Turkish industry that it has six movies on the same subject either recently on release or imminent?...

He’s back. No, not Arnold; the T-100. Robert Patrick co-stars in this anti-terrorism thriller that finds a suspect on the loose in New York City with Turkish and FBI agents hot on his trail. Though the box reads Act of Vengeance, released in 2012, the film is also confusingly titled Five Minarets in New York, attributed to 2010. That aside, it’s an interesting enough B-grade thriller that plays like a made-for-tv movie with a cast that knows the ropes enough to pull the line.
A failed and grisly raid in Istanbul forces two Turkish agents, one played by the writer/director (Mahsun Kirmizigul), to travel to New York in pursuit of the Anarchist. With domestic films repeatedly ranking in the nation's most viewed, the Turkish industry is booming as others around it stall
You couldn't move for new waves in the noughties: even Antarctica looked capable of knocking out its own film scene. But the Latin American buena onda in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, the South Korea extreme-Asia offshoot and the Russian blockbuster boom all had one thing in common. They found it hard to sustain their initial impact, whether it was because the global media moved on to the next big thing, or their key directors were poached by Hollywood, or there was a lack of sustained investment. Gael García Bernal reflected on the Mexican version of the problem at an Nft talk: "When we did Amores Perros, Mexico only made six films that year. There will be 65 films this year. But I don't know how many of those will be seen.
