Perfect for Fans and New Audiences
thewillsy10 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I was able to catch Episode 1 at a special event in London courtesy of Bethesda, Prime and Samsung.

War, War never changes... even in Canon shows like this. From the start, you are greeted with an idealistic future, where our history had changed its course after the Second World War when we stepped away from the Vaccum Tube. The atom is utilised everywhere, and this retro future show encompasses what gamers are all too familiar with.

The first episode opens with a Pre-War setting where something about Walton isn't quite right, not from what we envisioned from the trailers.

There is a really good character build for Lucy, Maximus, The Ghoul, and Hank ... But not Dr Wilzig. The first episode is full of character and set building but with that "Fallout" humour and tongue in cheek jokes (both physical and verbal).

The show ends with the mission in hand, ready for all lead characters to find their way through the Wasteland looking for one thing and one thing only.

This show has enough gore to feel like you have blood on your hands.

I can't wait for this to drop in full tomorrow!

Far Beyond Expectations
evilpalm11 April 2024
I just finished watching the first episode, called "The End" I can say WOW! It does not disappoint, in fact It far exceed my expectations. Directed by Jonathan Nolan, the acclaimed director and screenwriter of Westworld, manages to keep the viewer's interest, the sequence of the stories is very well told, has high doses of violence and gore, the characters are believable and fun. The episode is enjoyable from beginning to end, I am a fan of the fallout series, the brotherhood of steel, etc. I know the elements of the game quite well and they are correctly done, the atmosphere of the world of fallout is achieved. Excellent start to the series. Congratulations.

Fall(out)ing love already!
eeyiiss11 April 2024
The opening to this episode is fantastic, Walton Goggins has been a revelation over many years but is captivating in the opening sequence!

Having been a fan of the game franchise for so long I was apprehensive, but this adaptation in episode one is giving me life and excitement for the rest of it. Just in the same way "The Last of Us* did. Hollywood should take more notice of these projects instead of rebooting old films.

The depiction of tech in the vault is flawless as is the soundtrack! I'm excited to see the story arch's develop for the four main characters we've met so far.

This first episode is the perfect way to get us hooked on the series, my only complaint is that all of the episodes have dropped at the same time. So who knows how long it will be before we get season two.

Crawl out to the Fallout
blakefisher-5309811 April 2024
As a huge Fallout fan and after seeing some of the trailers my expectations for the show were lukewarm at best. I could not be happier with how wrong I was. The attention to detail is actually mind boggling. Everything in the show screams Fallout while simultaneously not shoving it in your face. Basically every scene had something new from the Fallout universe that I couldn't help but smile at. The story itself feels like an extension of the game in the best way possible. If you're a Fallout fan I cannot see how you won't love this show.

Trying to set aside my love for the series itself I still think the show would stand up phenomenally for someone who knows next to nothing about the already pre-established world that it takes place in. The three main characters who were introduced all have a good amount of time to let the viewer really get to know them and their motivations. The visuals are top-notch, it has the signature tongue in cheek type humor, dialogue is well thought out, pacing is on point, and there isn't one actor that I can really fault anything with.

It's always really difficult to adapt something that so many people love. But wow, did this first episode exceed my expectations in every way. Thank you to everyone involved in the project for giving such a faithful and fun adaptation to an already fantastic world. 10/10.

Here for Walton Goggins
tgurnsey-117 April 2024
I'm not a gamer so I'm not familiar with the game. I came to watch because of the awesome and underrated Walton Goggins who plays The Ghoul.

He has a unique charm about him when he speaks which always intrigues me.

Being unfamiliar with the game, I have to say the show ia super strange but in a good way.

It keeps me interested so I hope to see another season because I am invested now!

What a start!
saifalsaadi10 April 2024
Honestly I wasn't expecting much for the fallout series as I have had bad experiences in shows that adapted a video game to a series or movies like Halo show for example or Tomb Raider, Gran Turismo, Uncharted and etc so my expatriates for the show was very low but it turned out to be pretty great, I like how the started the show it felt like any beginning fallout Bethesda game, from the vault into the world and see how destroyed everything around you, I don't want to spoil anything but if you liked The Last Of Us show you experience something similar, and for anyone who haven't played or knows anything about fallout universe they will explain how everything becomes ruined, hope you enjoy the show and can't wait to see other people opinions about the first season of fallout.

Did Everything Right
jacobk-9547011 April 2024
Didn't blow me away (pun intended)... but why should it, as a first episode? It established everything perfectly. Loyal to the lore of the video games, without trying to rip them off. Humor is well done, which is something I was worried about- it's not stupid and doesn't try too hard. It has that fallout charming humor, with a layer of creepiness about it. The main cast is great and all the main characters are surprisingly likable. Costume and sets are great. I think everything will like it, and fallout fans will appreciate it even more than most. That is the perfect formula for a show based on a game. Gets 8 stars easily, borderline 9.

A great show opener....and I can't wait to see more
grlym-4684911 April 2024
So while my experience playing the game has been limited, I have loved the theme, artistry and world mechanics of Fallout since its creation.

I love the music, the gadgets, costumes, etc

This show seems to have captured so much if all this in a high quality way. Not only did my son and ai enjoy it, but my wife went from "oh, another game to tv show " attitude to near instant interest. For me that shows how good the show is. Meaning the story is compelling to a wide range of audiences. The only other game to tv that was like this was "Last of us". Which was also awesome.

This show has so much promise and has delivered a great first episode. Making you anxious to see more. I hope it keeps being like this.

As a side note, I am very happy that this is more adult than kid like show in the way they delivered the content.

Pro Tip: Skip the Mid-Credits Trailer
infinitetyler16 April 2024
I don't have a frame of reference for this besides "that one cool looking game my friends played while I was leveling my blood elf mage". From that perspective, 'The End' was a pretty enjoyable episode. Giving it an 8 might be a little generous, but there wasn't anything beyond what the ratings note that might put anyone off.

It has a fun backdrop, interesting characters, intriguing story, a few different plot threads that could go in a number of directions, and some good fight scenes and explosions. My biggest criticism would be that it's a bit predictable, but there are enough things done well for the genre that the predictability is forgivable.

While this isn't always the case, 'Fallout' appears to be an instance of Amazon relentlessly promoting something that happens to be good. They got a bit overzealous with the promo and put some spoilers in the trailer that runs during the end credits though(for us non-gamers).

Compelling world and characters but not enough time for atmosphere
thegreendrinker16 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The episode's strongest asset is Ella Purnell's fearless performance as Lucy who provides us an earnest, open-minded viewpoint in which to view the apocalypse. Seeing a glimpse of the falsely sunny dystopia of the vault only to have it rudely interrupted by her brother's discovery that the neighboring vaulters are not who they seem was a great moment of quickly escalating horror. The episode suffers a bit after this point, though.

I like the concept for fearful Maximus- a military man who is way in over his head- but I felt like the introduction of the Brotherhood of Steel cult happened too quickly. Same with the intentionally narmy introduction of the Ghoul. Fallout's heightened, decidedly less than grounded approach to the apocalypse is what is appealing about it. That being said, I would have preferred for us to spend more time on Lucy's vault existence pre-massacre and have the world unfold before her organically as she discovers it.

URANIUM FEVER
copewashere11 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Strong start, I've been an avid Fallout Fan since i was a kid. I really enjoyed this opening episode. There's still a lot of episodes left of course but I think there is potential here, a lot of it. I think fans will be happy with this opening, at least this one is. I have a lot more I want to see, can't wait to see more mutants, other factions, and the world itself. The scene where the Lucy's father locks her in the room, that felt like an intro to the a game. The cutscene where you get your characters motivation. Felt like Fallout 4 as you watch helplessly when Shaun is taken. Seriously, excited to see what comes next, hoping to not be disappointed.

A bit of a mess structurally
lukekelly-9652911 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
First off the prop and costume designs were on point, very well done, and inspiration was clearly drawn heavily on the source material.

However, the structure of the episode was very messy, and perhaps harmed the introduction of key elements like the wasteland and the Brotherhood of Steel.

A lot of care and time was dedicated to Lucy's arc near the beginning, and we got a good look at life in the vault, how sheltered they were, and how they used the technology. Furthermore, it built up nicely to the reveal that their honoured guests were anything but, however the climax of this part was fine almighty entirely in slow motion, which dragged on for way too long, and took the suspense out of it, as you were left watching maybe four quick scenes extended into a nearly ten minute stretch.

Then, after the hook, where the father is abducted, it suddenly cuts to an entirely new character outside of the vault.

Maximus, I'm sure will go on to have a good arc, but to introduce him midway through an intense action scene which sets up a key element of the show, only to give him 5-10 minutes, then go immediately back to Lucy felt unnecessary.

This was our first time seeing the outside, and we get a glimpse at...sand, and we see the brotherhood of steel, who seem to all be unnecessarily mean towards him. In this time we see he is bullied by everyone around him, gets the blame for something he clearly didn't do, then we go back to Lucy.

This had two major drawbacks, first it ended up with Lucy's decision to leave the vault (something they had never done) as a rushed segment, where she decides to leave, is told not to, then does anyway in about 5 minutes, with no tension in people trying to stop her.

And now, the reveal of the wasteland is lessened because we already saw a glimpse of outside the vault.

I like the games just fine, and I'm not comparing the show directly to the games as I haven't played any in a long while, but it seems like genuine passion was put into the show, however, the structure really let it down.

If they had moved Maximus' segment to the end, and wrapped up Lucy's introduction uninterrupted I feel like it would have lead to a much stronger opening.

High Production Value
Warin_West-El26 April 2024
I'm not a gamer and have never heard of Fallout, so my only concern was the entertainment value. The lead character, Lucy, was somewhat interesting.

But I have to agree with the commentator who said Jonathan Nolan seems to have trouble writing pilots. I remember watching the first episode of Westworld and wondering why it got such high ratings. Especially since I had watched the original movie.

I agree with the commentators who said this episode is clunky and somewhat disjointed. The writer's task is to provide a compelling obstacle that needs to be addressed. Johnathan Nolan failed to do that. Yes, we know that Lucy wants to find her dad. But so what? Moreover, the story of Maximus interfered with the flow of events.

Where I WILL give credit is the production values were stellar. The sets were believable and well detailed. A smart move on the producer's part. This is Sci-Fi. If you want us to accept an alternative world, you have to sell it.

Hopefully, this story will get better as we go along.

"Call the doctor, we got a BLEEDER!"
Amthermandes12 April 2024
Like most reviewers out there right now, I've been a Fallout game series player for many years (quick self-plug, check out my YouTube video: "Fallout 3: The Many Deaths of Tenpenny"!). When the trailers first came out, I was skeptical. Video games to movies usually turn out poorly. But this one, did a pretty good job staying true to the nature of the games, while appeasing both loyal fans and audiences hearing about the game series for the first time.

Fallout is a world that poses the hypothetical question: what if the WWII era lived on for over a century, never evolving socially, only technologically, and eventually leading to a complete nuclear apocalypse? Once the bombs were dropped, people led their whole lives underground, from birth to death, having never known the way of life on the surface. But certain "vault-dwellers," as they are called, yearn for freedom and adventure. On the surface, it is a harsh, cruel reality. But by braving hostile organisms and environments, treasure can be found. Usually, bottlecaps.

Let's get the negatives out of the way. First, CGI is once again, too much of a special effects crutch. It's sloppy and cheap looking. I'm mostly talking about the heat-of-the-battle gore effects. You might as well have characters biting down on firecracker berries. Secondly, it's yet another big-budgeted project with a carefully selected balance of gender and racial roles, because we just can't afford to offend anybody these days. Third, it sometimes feels like it tries too hard.

That's mostly it. So far, one episode in, and I am doing my best to hurry this review up to start the next episode. It's fun, it appeals to modern audiences (especially those who hate a dull moment and rely on immediate satisfaction and constant action. Kinda like those die-hard Call of Duty players, and no I'm definitely certainly most likely possibly not one of them), because it follows the modern tv show formula, and features violence that'd make your great grandparents pull you out of their will if they knew you were watching it.

Game references are certainly abundant. From chems like jet and stimpacks and food like Cram and tatos (and drinks like nuka-cola!!), to the structures and tech, to enhancements and perks, to the different factions and enemies. It's almost like they want you to play a drinking game where if you took a sip of beer every time there's a game reference, you'd be sloshed after the first episode.

The game series does a tremendous portraying a seemingly innocent and amiable atmosphere at first glance. As you play the game, the apparent charming mood of the world of Fallout is often disrupted by moments which bring about an unnerving feeling that something isn't quite right. Sometimes these moments are subtle, and eerie. Sometimes the moments are shocking interactions of blatant, spine-tingling horror.

The way this first episode is pulled off makes me think that one of the goals of the show was to capture this bi-polar quality. It can be light-hearted and comedic, but also unnerving, and sometimes violent and freaky. But while I appreciate them staying true to the nature of Fallout, of all the creepy things that occur in the the world of this first Fallout episode, nothing can be creepier than the heavily implied "cousin stuff."

Things I'm hoping they'll include in future episodes: Nuka-Cola Quantum, a jacked up raider on psycho-jet, unnecessarily excessive powerfist use, Strong from Fallout 4, a cool action sequence using the VATS system, heavy gun modding, wacky easter eggs, and a friggin' DEATHCLAW!!!

A biased avid Fallout (pc) gamer review
bones-203-92324511 April 2024
I have 8k hours in F4. Mostly because love tinkering with settlements. I played all 3 factions.

Now, however, this is the tv-show version and it is BRILLIANT!

It gets the game art right, it gets a story right and it gets the T-60!!!!

It gets the Vaults right and even the guns!

And it have the "Junk cannon"!!

This is just good.

Very accurate to detail and the "live" touch.

Now we need see how the story develops but for now it starts with a "BANG"!

It is very satisfying watch a tv-show version of a game you truly loved from bits to end.

This is pron for Fallout lovers. For others? Maybe not.

"The end" is only the BEGINNING! BRAVO!
missesluvjones11 April 2024
The buzz around Fallout from video game enthusiasts is well established and right on target! I was amazed at the cohesion and my ability to dive in as an observer, as I only watch not play the game. Episode 1: "The End" is a thoughtfully executed introduction to main characters, The Ghoul, Lucy, and Maximus each of which are key players in their own right. The show and this episode are action-packed, highly engaging and executed by a phenomenal cast that I can only hope gamers can get behind as well. I know that just in observing others' play that I was very intrigued by the story behind the game. Episode one gives us a look at the different factions and the story of the fallout and what happens some 200+ years later. What I love is that this show is written so well that you can dive in even if you just want to know what all the hoopla is about. This pleases me very much. I can't wait to dive into the remaining episodes! And who doesn't absolutely love Walton Goggins?! Cheers to a great season 1!

War never changes
hstrymastr11 April 2024
This was a fantastic episode. They did it perfectly. This is definitely fallout! From the casting to the props everything was fine perfectly. The main character Lucy is the perfect vault dweller. The episode had similar humor to the games. There were big twists in the episode that I was NOT expecting. Walton Goggins was perfect as always. I foresee either Walton Goggins or Zach Cherry being the best actor in the show. The episode felt way quicker than it actually was. I was just blown away by how well done it was with all the other bad video game adaptations, this one was actually very good. Can't wait to watch the rest of the show.

As a Fallout fan, I can't wait to watch the rest
SchNiVas11 April 2024
I'm elated to have watched this first episode and not immediately feel a sense of dread and disappointment as so many other video games adaptations have. This is far from the best thing I've ever watched, but for being a series, not a Hollywood movie, this is simply a great start for a video game adaptation. A quick breakdown for this first episode:

Visual/Art Direction: 9/10 (true to source material as live action can be)

Acting: 7.5/10 (a bit uncanny/campy at points, but fitting at the same time given the source material. At times, I'd bump this to an 8 or 8.5)

Special Effects: 10/10 (absolutely no complaints, especially since it's a series and not a movie. All tv series should have this level of special effects work!)

Content: 6.5/10 (It's gory for sure, but I don't know what I expected for something in the Fallout series lol. It has nudity and some strong language, but at least going of this first episode, I've definitely seen worse. Definitely not a kids show, but not so bad that I feel dirty watching it).

Atmosphere: 9.5/10 (not sure if they could make it feel any more Fallout for a live action show)

Story: 8.5/10 (good so far, too early to give a real take, though).

Source Faithfulness/Lore Accuracy: 9/10 (Since it never claimed to be connected to any existing lore, but just that it's "set in the Fallout Universe", They've done a fantastic job so far with all the elements of Fallout they've incorporated! The "game elements" they have chosen to add are fantastic and abundant, and I hope they keep it up!!)

If you're a Fallout fan, this is worth your time!

A great introduction to the world of Fallout
khovasapian11 April 2024
As a fan of the Fallout game series I entered this episode with a lot of hype. Every moment is captivating, charming and fun. From the start we are introduced to new characters that we will learn more about in the series, and the character building starts straight away.

I'm looking forward to seeing what journeys we take through the wasteland over the course of Season 1. The episode sets up some important stakes for the hero, and we are introduced to some different factions as well.

Definitely recommend to fans and non fans as they aren't expecting you to understand the lore of what's happening and is very watchable if you don't know anything about Fallout. It's a bonus of course if you are a fan because there's a lot of fan service in this episode.

Looking forward to what comes in the next episode.

It's fine but nothing amazing.
j-bruns11 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Fight scenes are terrible but everything else is fine I guess.

I have absolutely no idea why they're in such a hurry to introduce all these factions, people and concepts at once though, why not focus on the Vault dweller and let us experience this world through her. Especially since her quest is the only real hook there is anyway.

Instead we already have the BoS complete with their hiring proces and ways of transportation, Raiders and how they enslave people and use chems to fight, ghouls and how they're immortal/feral.

Plus the the Enclave is namedropped, which is only of note to people familiar with this franchise.

I'm not too big on mystery boxes but what am I watching this for? What stakes are there?

The girl needing to find her father but she herself doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry. And as audience we don't really know why she should be hurrying either.

The BoS aspirant wants to ... take revenge or something? On who? For what? Being locked in a fridge (nice nod to Fallout 4)?

Walter Goggings is set free - to do what? For his "love of the game"? Why should we care?

It's good that it's thematically fairly consistent with the games so it'll keep the gamers engaged at least, but for a pilot this is exceptionally weak.

An interesting start
ungirebecca11 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
As a fan of the games, I was so excited to watch and see how the show turned out. The trailers have looked amazing so far.

The first episode really helps to put the world into prospective from many different points of view. Throughout we are introduced to different characters that we will continue to follow throughout the series.

From the beginning we are introduced to Lucy who lives in one of the vaults. She's never seen the outside and the chaos created many years ago.

It shows really well the severity of there situation being locked in a vault and how the lack of communication is lost between vaults. Due to the situation they have shortages of food that quickly leads to the loss of live. It's a fine balance.

It also shows the raids the vault face and how dangerous they can be. Facing the unknown from the outside world, raiders what anything and everything that can help and aren't scared to take a life.

We watch as Lucy's life is quickly turned upside down and she now needs to face the outside alone to find her father and maybe more about her past.

Maximum is the next character we are introduced too.

Maximum is training with the Brotherhood of steel, we see how he was picked up very young and wants revenge on the people that hurt him even if it goes against his softer personality.

This also mirrors a different way of living compared to the vault. This life is rough and not as sheltered as the vault. It's tough to survive with people stealing food and even hurting one another.

Finally we meet The ghoul, who is a Mutant in this world. This heavily shows the consequences of the environment now and how badly the radiation has effected the this part of the world.

It will be great to learn more about the characters.

For the first episode I found it really enjoyable. It was a great way to introduce different characters to the audience and show us a little about them

I feel it also really captured the aesthetic of the world amazingly, Flfrom the use of pitboys to jet. I can't wait to continue watching.

Prepare for the future!
thelemon-9940311 April 2024
This is a good first episode. Thank God!

Very clearly shows respect for the series, and authentically portrays the universe. Set, costume and prop design are fantastic.

Acting pretty good too, along with characters. I look forward to their journeys, and a really big fan already of the structure with multiple protagonists and stories- really awesome.

Writing as a whole is pretty good. The odd miss here and there line/joke wise, little corny at times but Fallout always has been (a little bit at least).

Soundtrack is probably my least favourite thing so far, the original score is far outshined by (the very well chosen I might add) licensed tracks, and to be honest just has not been hitting at all for me. Just seems like a really boring and generic score, for such a dynamic and colourful world -doesn't help that the game's scores were far better. Here's hoping it improves.

All in all though, very minor complaints: and very easily could be forgiven as the show goes on and leans into more its already pretty damn good best parts. Excited to continue!

Smug Boring Lame & Dumb
Johnny_West20 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It takes around thirty minutes to introduce all the rejects from the surface world that live in Vault 33. I was trying not to puke as I watched this smarmy sugary jello bomb.

The bug-eyed girl who thinks she is God's Gift wants to get married, but she cannot find anyone in her vault, so she forces her Dad, the Mayor (Kyle McLachlan) to get her a mail-order husband. He reaches out to the next vault, 32. Apparently over the previous 50+ years nobody has kept in touch with their neighbors, and has no idea that vault 32 has ceased to exist.

All hell breaks loose when the wedding guests arrive to vault 33. Not sure why or what the point of the invasion was, except killing the vault-dwellers. Just a lot of pointless mayhem and ridiculous nonsense.

Bug-eyed girl decides to leave vault 33 so she can search for her Dad, who got kidnapped. None of this makes any sense, just a bunch of random stupidity and not much else.

This show is S.P.E.C.I.A.L.
wgyxjxgc13 April 2024
Todd Howard's finally released a product that works at launch... no patch notes required.

It's rare to get a good game tie in to movies and even rarer for the other way around. I honestly spent a large part of the episode with my jaw dropped at how amazing the setting was depicted! I felt like I was back in the world of Fallout.

Whilst I appreciate this show probably won't be a perfect 10 for everyone, to a franchise veteran I had to score it this high for feeling so true to the source material. This has been a breath of fresh air when compared to so many other franchises like Halo, Star Wars sequels & Marvel disregarding much of their source material.

For those new to the franchise It's been a long time since I was so gripped by the opening of a show. Starting at "the end" is a great way for people who are new to the franchise to explore the world of fallout without having to invest so many hours into the games and Lore.

Great job!

So Far So Good
maddmaxx4618 April 2024
I'm a huge fan of video game series so I was a bit nervous about the quality this show was going to be but so far, it's been fantastic. This episode did a great job incorporating staples in the Fallout game series but also created a brand-new story in the universe. The opening scene setting the background story about how this world came to be was a great touch and a great introduction to new fans. I really like Purnell as Lucy and feel like she was perfectly cast to play the lead. Moten as Maximus is undecided for me since it didn't go too deep into his story, but I like what I see so far. Goggins as the Ghoul is another fantastic casting choice. The setting, visuals, etc. Are exactly what I would look for in a show based on the series and I can't wait to continue watching. 4/5 stars.
