- It's spring 1939, as the period drama returns for a 3rd series. Tristan is now a qualified vet, and James enters a new stage of his life with Helen; however, with war looming, all have to consider their purpose in Darrowby and beyond.
- While country-folk consider joining the army as a war looms in 1939, the Farnon brothers wisely argue James too is far more useful keeping the food production going. Furthermore, his wedding day is at hand, while bride Helen serves father Richard and kid sister elaborate breakfast to avoid her insecurity, but is firmly pushed to the altar. The Farnons also treat James to a stag party guaranteeing huge hangovers, while Siegfried and Mrs. Hall keep playing prankster games with the ring entrusted to best man Tristan, till the very moment. James has to be dragged away from the farmer he insisted to help with a cow herd, arriving unfashionably led and in messy attire.—KGF Vissers
- It's the day before James and Helen's wedding, the wedding she would have wanted the first time around with only immediate family, which on James' side also includes his veterinary family of the Farnons and Mrs. Hall, plus a few exceptions for various reasons. Helen's father and sister half joke that they have to get her to the altar this time, while Siegfried is half serious that he is irked that James will be gone for a week for his honeymoon during what is one of the busiest times of the year. What are more serious statements are Mrs. Hall's assertion that Siegfried and especially Tristan are not to do anything to James at his stag party on this, the day before the wedding, and irresponsible Tristan's vow, as best man, to hold onto the wedding ring for dear life until the ceremony. Others take matters into their own hands knowing Tristan's nature, which may only complicate matters about getting that ring on Helen's finger at the ceremony. But James' sense of duty may factor into what happens with the wedding, both regarding animal welfare and national pride in tensions rising on the continent leading to military recruiters going into overdrive, animal sickness and the possibility of war which do not take breaks just because James is about to get married.—Huggo
