Three men ,escaping from the German invasion circa 1943 , wind up on an island in the Atlantic ocean, soon to be two after one of their pals'death;the beginning obviously imitates Jules Verne's "L'Ile Mysterieuse" but the screenplay goes its own way afterward.
The best of the film is the wandering though a subterranean world which could easily pass for a tribute to Edgar P. Jacobs ;that one of the two castaways should go crazy makes sense -although the flashbacks do not fit the movie very well-;besides it's a good idea to reveal the secret through engravings ,even though this "secret" is in the end quite derivative .
One more time, the ending is very disappointing ,and perhaps the writer/director had an "island 2" in mind ,had the movie been a hit;it was not and it finally left the audience hungry for more, cause the movie had a real potential.
Like this?Try these:
-"Island of lost souls" (1932) and its remakes "the island of Dr Moreau" (1976 and 1996)
-"Mysterious island" (1961) and its remake "l'Ile Mysterieuse"(1972)
