Vaanam - A pot of human emotions
nair_vinod5 May 2011
People has been anticipating the release of this film since it was launched and here it is.In short, it is a mixture of human emotions. A remake of the 2010 Telugu hit, Vedam and directed by Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi who directed the original as well. The film was eagerly anticipated because two reasons which are, an ensemble starcast which is a rarity in Tamil cinema and Yuvan's music.

Vaanam is STR's first movie after the success of the romantic flick Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya. As Cable Raja, he played his role as a slum dweller to perfection. This proves he can really play varied roles. Bharath played the role of a budding rockstar well. His body language and dialogues suits him perfectly while Vega was adequate in her role as Bharath's companion.Anushka reprised her role from the original and she did a good job here as well. Like Anushka, Saranya also reprised her role from the original. As a poor weaver, she excels in her role. Her body language and dialogue delivery is brilliant.Prakashraj as usual, played his role with finesse. This time, he played the role of a discriminated Muslim with sheer excellence. Santhanam was good as STR's sidekick. He impresses with his usual comic antics alongside VTV Ganesh as well. Debutant Jasmin Bhasin performed relatively good and fills the requirements of her character. Hats off to her for dubbing in her own voice. An impressive attempt.

One of the highlights of the film is Yuvan Shankar Raja's music. YSR has done a wonderful job. The film's BGM suits the mood of the film well but it is kinda loud in certain parts of the film. Evandi Unna Pethan is definitely the one of the best songs along with No Money No Honey. Both songs were well-choreographed and STR's dance moves are mesmerising.

Nirav Shah's cinematography is excellent as usual. The colour tone suits the scenes perfectly although the angles were a bit dizzying in certain scenes. The songs were well picturized.

Stunts by Silva is commendable and apt for the action scenes. Anthony's editing is crisp and the film does not drag.

Vaanam is a potpourri of emotions and the performance of the cast is excellent plus it does come with a message for all. A different treat for movie buffs and I can easily say that it is one of the best movies to come out of the Tamil cinema industry.

A movie worthy of watching, though not original.

I saw this movie recently, and surprisingly I am impressed by it. Simbu has finally done the best movie (other than Vinnaithandi Varuvaayaa). Now he can proudly say that he has talent and he can sure well act and do character based movies. Many people think it is remake of a Telugu movie, though in reality both of these movies are remakes of the 2004 academy award winner Crash. The director has done an excellent job in adapting the story to our Indian culture. Just like Crash, the characters intertwine at some points with many subplots and themes involving judging others, racism, religious discrimination, power and other horrible things that plagues this world.

The movie has a good screenplay, good music and light comedy thrown in here and there. A complex story from South India, it is and that's saying something as it never happens normally and if it did happens usually they suck. But this one's much better.

A movie well worth watching. Though, I still think that nothing can top the 2004 Best Picture Academy Award Winner, "Crash".

I give it 7.8 out of 10.

Not bad at all!

Vaaman, aka SKY is not your usual ROM- com flick, that gives you nothing other than mental satisfaction. It all pans out in the last 30 minutes, where the film really stands out unique. Vedham did not satisfy me tat much, but d Tamil version is better. . . First the appreciation goes to director Krish. . . And not to forget Ganesh and Santanam with their humors working quite a few wonders. . . . Great work by the entire cast, with STR and Anushka being brilliant along with Prakash Raj. . . Guided by some decent camera works and decent background score. The title song Vaanam and No Money remain chart busters, will keep you happy and contented throughout! A must watch . . .

A must watch....

First of all this movie is a remake from Telugu movie Vedam. Well when i watched the original version i realized the story is quite interesting and emotional so i've decided to watch Vaanam and for my surprise the story line and all the loop holes were improved. Each of the character in the movie lives up to the expectation and every character has a message to display which is an important criteria for a movie goer like me. Thus the music was a well done task by Yuvan Shankar Raja not only by giving a chart buster single, yet the song Vaanam sung by himself was exceptionally woven brilliantly together with the story line. As the plot shapes together it draws more and more interest to know what will happen next. The acting of star cast such as Str,Barath,Anushka, Saranya, Prakash Raj, VTV Ganesh and Santhanam was brilliant and subtle and authentic. The climax was brilliant and it will touch your soul and will make you think . The ending of the movie is not an ending it's more to the beginning of a new life. Vaanam is not a movie is an experience with deep message. Live your life by giving others a life to live. A well done by Krish and crew.. Two Thumbs Up..

Soulless..... Warning: Spoilers
"Vaanam " is yet another example how in one language the movie can be interesting but in another not. It's been credited that Krish , who did the original is the director for this remake too but he has failed to recreate the same levels of emotion & passion this time around.

For those who are seeing the movie for the first time , the movie may be passable. But for those who have already seen the original it might be striking that the soul & spirit of the original is missing in Tamil version. The screenplay plays truant here with many scenes ending abruptly which gives a feeling as to whether the movie was done in haste. The climax which packed a punch & left one moved in the original , leaves the viewers apathetic in this remade version.

The extra bout of heroism for Silambarasan is unwarranted but on the whole he has done justice to the role which has shades of grey throughout. Bharath is okay in his role while Prakash Raj is convincing as ever. Shanthanam is the one of the few positives of the movie & his is the only one which can be said better than the original. (other than the music )

Vega , Sonia Agarwal & Jasmine make up the numbers while Anuskha's portions are just reused from the original.

Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja is good with the songs already very popular. " Evandi unna pethan " is afoot tapping number but letdown by the picturisation.

Neerav Shah's cinematography is pleasant .

On the whole , "Vaanam " is a huge letdown if you have seen the original while an okay movie if you are watching it for the first time.

Bottomline : Soulless.....
