This episode opens with a man and his fifteen year old son playing volleyball; they stop for a drink break and shortly afterwards the boy collapses and dies. It turns out that he was allergic to the tartrazine food colouring in the drink. The quantity in the drink shouldn't have affected him but analysis shows that it contained over forty times the amount it should. Chief Inspector Klaus Borowski is in charge of the case and is soon paying a visit to the dairy that made the drink. It is a small local operation and they most profitable product is the drink that killed the boy. A quick look around the facility shows that a door has been forced meaning that anybody could access the production and there are a fair few suspects; most notably the owner's brother who doesn't approve of the way his sister runs the family business and a 'food detective' who fights against food additives and we later learn is involved with the owner's daughter. The dairy's owner goes to see the dead boy's father; ostensibly to offer her condolences but clearly she thinks it would be good PR for the company.
In the UK this was rebadged as 'Inspector Borowski' and shown as episode one. As such it served well to introduce the character; Axel Milberg does a fine job in the role; a bit of a loner but an effective detective. The rest of the cast are solid too. The story is interesting it made a change to have a murder mystery that doesn't really contain a murder; the adding of the extra tartrazine should only have caused mild illness and damaged the product's reputation making it a case of manslaughter. There are a good number of viable suspects to keep the viewer guessing and a tense finale when it looks as if the father will have his revenge. Anybody in the UK put off this by all the guidance warnings needn't worry; apart from some swearing there isn't anything that is likely to offend any fans of murder mysteries. Overall an enjoyable story that fans of the genre should enjoy.
