Keanu Reeves was already a beloved actor before he became a meme. The Sad Keanu meme took on a life of its own. A photo of Reeves on location in New York, eating a sandwich on a bench, went viral, and he’s still answering for it today. But, at least in his latest interview, Reeves had made peace with Sad Keanu.

Reeves was a guest on the Smartless podcast on March 27 after John Wick: Chapter 4 opened at no. 1. He actually brought up Sad Keanu himself.
‘Sad Keanu’ was Reeves’ first meme
Reeves has been famous since the ‘80s so he was used to paparazzi following him around. As he told Stephen Colbert in 2021, via W Magazine, he was just hungry. Henry’s Crime was his movie that filmed in New York in 2010, and Reeves said he was already in post when he had lunch outside.

Blending science, romance and spirituality all into a movie we called "an intelligent and ambitious adult drama," you might think the soundtrack to "I Origins" would be perhaps somber or restrained. You would be mistaken. Will Bates and Phil Mossman, who have previously collaborated on "Lola Versus," "Generation Um...," "The Normals" and "Another Earth," take composing duties here and deliver something a bit unexpected for "I Origins." So turn up your speakers and read on... "No Time Like The Present" is a surprisingly propulsive and compelling track, that moves steadily in its brisk running time, never losing momentum, but also creating an undercurrent of undeniable atmosphere. And that seems to strike the right tone for "I Origins" which follows a molecular biologist, who makes a discovery that could change everything we know about society and humanity. It's another nice piece of work from a...

Remember Keanu Reeves? He used to be a popular actor who made his name in basically every film genre. From the Bill and Ted movies to Speed to The Matrix, the man was certainly a bankable film star. Unfortunately, in the last decade or so, he has experienced something of a decline in the quality of his roles. The worst came in 2008 with the dismal The Day the Earth Stood Still remake. Mr. Reeves had made a career relying on his wooden persona but this was just the worst. Similar criticism can be said for Generation Um..., an independent cinematic mess and his latest debacle now out in a limited theatrical release and on Video on demand (VOD).

I've always been a fan of Keanu Reeves. From his days as Ted "Theodore" Logan in Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure to Jack Travern in Speed to Neo in The Matrix and as the titular Constantine, he's always dabbled in the big studio pool without ever fully diving in, allowing himself the freedom to play in a lot of other ponds. Such is the case with his latest indie pic, Generation Um..., which finds the actor back in "whoa" mode,...

Plot: Three people talk to each other, wander around New York City and attempt to understand something about themselves during the course of a couple of days. Review: This is less a review than a warning. Generation Um..., is an intolerable, droning, shapeless mess of a movie. In fact, it’s so poorly conceived that calling it a movie is almost inaccurate. It’s like a documentary about people you’d never in a million years care to learn about, edited with zero...

Grab your Beanie Babies and throw on a scrunchie, everything about this week seemed obsessively stuck in a bygone era. Steven Seagal made the news, Alex Winter and Keeanu Reeves (yes, Bill & Ted) both resurfaced, and we discovered that fans want to resurrect a past TV show (in movie form) so badly that they'll pay millions for it. Literally. Ah, the good old days...
» Yep, it turns out the best way to make a movie these days is to hold an old fashioned fundraiser. When Rob Thomas, creator of cult classic "Veronica Mars," told fans they'd get a movie version of their beloved TV show if they could raise $2 million in a month, fans dug deep into their pockets. They hit their mark before the day ended and as of yesterday, the total has reached over $3 million. Now the wheels are spinning in every Hollywood bigwig's brain.

"Is that a camera?"
Keanu Reeves' last big studio release was 2008's The Day the Earth Stood Still, with the actor preferring to keep to his roots and act in smaller, indie movies in the interim. Of course, there's also the upcoming samurai movie 47 Ronin which was originally supposed to come out last year but has been delayed not once, but twice. Fear not, however, Reeves' fans, as the actor has another indie drama arriving with Generation Um..., whose first trailer has arrived online.
As Reeves himself explains in his introduction to the trailer, Generation Um... follows the lives of three New York City friends (Reeves, Silent Hill: Revelation's Adelaide Clemens and Devil's Bojana Novakovic) during a 24-hour period and, apparently, things get intense after Reeves steals a camera and starts recording their conversations.

Sitting on a shelf for a long, long time (it shot about two years ago, with the first images arriving in 2011), the Keanu Reeves starring indie "Generation Um..." is finally making its way to theaters this spring. And this first trailer is here, and if you've ever wanted to see a movie where Reeves steals a video camera to like, shoot his own life woah, then this is for you. Written and directed by Mark Mann, the film follows the aimless John, who spends some time with two lovely ladies, Violet (Bojana Novakovic) and Mia (Adelaide Clemens) as they figure out their lives or whatever. The whole thing gives off the faint stink of Slacker Wisdom without really feeling earned at all. And we'll let YouTube user mrrap4food sum it up best: "...this is what neos life woulda been if he had of took that other pill." Word. "Generation Um......

It's been almost four years since Keanu Reeves last appeared in a movie (trivia answer: the indie "Henry's Crime"), but if you've been wondering what Reeves has been up to, wonder no more. Because based on the new Apple Trailers debut for "Generation Um...," it appears he's been time traveling back to the 90's.
And not the good '90s of "The Matrix." The bad '90s of "Johnny Mnemonic."
Here's the scoop: Reeves plays an aging guy — hard to believe, but the dude is turning 49 this year! — who has never matured past his mid-20s heyday. As a result, he still hangs out with much younger women (Bojana Novakovic and Adelaide Clemens) and basically does nothing with his life except steal a gigantic video camera some retro hipster must have inherited from his grandpa. Then he uses the camera to film the trio slumming around the city being as louche and annoying as possible.

Having Keanu Reeves introduce a trailer isn't an everyday occurrence, but Generation Um… is an indie flick that might only have Keanu Reeves going for it. The film looks gritty and/or completely disjointed, like Rent without the singing, maybe. Keanu operates a camera and quizzes his younger lady companions about their sex lives. He gets a cupcake-eating close-up. He drives a shabby brown automobile. That's about all we can tell. (THR has a little color to add, saying Generation Um... "follows a single night in the lives of three party-hopping friends in New York City as they document their sexual escapades and test the boundaries of their relationship.") Mark Mann's feature debut will hit VOD on April 26 and has a limited theatrical release beginning May 3.

Employing a hybrid of smart and quippy comedic observations, a perceptive outlook on the complications of 20/30-something relationships in New York and genuine moments of heartache, the romantic comedy “Lola Versus” can’t seem to synthesize these elements into a fully satisfying experience by the end of its brief 89-minute running time.
Part of the problem is a clipped and rushed tempo and the fact that while auspicious, well-shot and carefully written, “Lola Versus” is also surprisingly conventional, and fails on its promise of negotiating comedic romantic despair and legitimate amorous despair in any meaningful way that we haven't already seen onscreen.
Written by Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones and directed by Wein (the creative pair who made a somewhat similar exploration of young love in “Breaking Upwards”), in “Lola Versus” Greta Gerwig plays the titular Lola, a 29-year-old woman dumped by her longtime boyfriend Luke (“The Killing” star Joel Kinnaman...

[1] Patrick Wilson could be reuniting with his Insidious director James Wan for The Conjuring, as he and Vera Farmiga enter final talks to star in the new supernatural thriller. Written by Chad and Carey Hayes, the script centers around a married couple (Wilson and Farmiga) investigating spirits in a Rhode Island farmhouse, in what turns out to be the most terrifying case of their demonology careers. The plot is inspired by the true-life tale of the Perron family in the 1970s, as chronicled by daughter Andrea Perron in her memoir House of Darkness House of Light: The True Story. Wilson currently stars on the big screen in Jason Reitman's Young Adult, and on the small screen in CBS' A Gifted Man. He'll next appear in Ridley Scott's Prometheus, due out this summer. Keanu Reeves tends to switch it up between blockbuster extravaganzas and lower-key indie fare (with mixed results on both ends). In between many of Keanu Reeves' other, more high profile projects such as 47 Ronin, he seems to want to kick back with a slow pacing Indie drama. Variety reports that he has signed up for Generation Um, along with Bojana Novakovic (Edge Of Darkness, Drag Me To Hell) and Adelaide Clemens, who had a small role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The film, which will begin shooting next Wednesday, follows the three characters over the course of a day as they bar crawl, engage in sex and drugs and go about their day-to-day lives in a haze of general indecision (hence the title).
Mark L. Mann has written the script and Jared Goldman and Voltage Pictures chief Nicolas Chartier are set to produce. In other news, Reeves' latest film Henry's Crime is to premiere next week at the Toronto Film Festival.

Changes are afoot for By Virtue Fall, the movie written by Sheldon Turner which will also mark his directorial debut. The film is about "a man who is framed by his mentor and winds up in prison. Once released, he’s fixated on getting revenge on his former partner, who has flourished in his new life and tried to cleanse himself of the past." Not long ago, Colin Farrell and Eric Bana were said to be circling the major roles, but money seemed like a sticking point. Evidently some things weren't resolved, as Farrell is no longer in the running, and he could be replaced by Jeremy Renner. Plus, we've got more story details thanks to a script review. First up, Deadline's report about Keanu Reeves and Generation Um offhandedly mentions that Colin Farrell 'fell out' of By Virtue Fall, and that talks have been going on with Jeremy ...

Keanu Reeves has landed an acting gig in an upcoming indie drama titled "Generation Um...," which kicks off filming this week, according to Variety. Mark L. Mann wrote the script and will direct the flick.
The film follows Reeves as he and his buddies waste time messing with sex, drugs and a lack of ideas what to do in the future. The story follows them as they embark on a journey of self-discovery.
Reeves' recent flicks include "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee," and he's got "Henry's Crime" and "Passengers" coming soon. He's got "Cowboy Bepop" in development.

Nicolas Chartier, the producer of The Hurt Locker who made waves last Oscar season when he was barred from the ceremony after sending a few emails urging people to vote for The Hurt Locker, is producing a new indie drama starring Keanu Reeves. The title is the not terribly convincing Generation Um. Mark L. Mann directs Reeves alongside Bojana Novakovic (Devil) and Adelaide Clemens, and Variety says the story follows "a day in the life of Reeves' character and his two cohorts as they live life on the fringe, immersed in sex, drugs and indecision. As they navigate their daily routine of bars and crowds, they embark on a path of self-discovery." The basics aren't much more compelling than the title, but I could probably watch an hour of Bojana Novakovic and Adelaide Clemens engaged in a life of 'sex, drugs and indecision.' The film will be part of...

Voltage Pictures chief Nicolas Chartier, trying to create some noise to follow The Hurt Locker, has announced a September 9 start date for Generation Um. The film, which stars Keanu Reeves, Bojana Novakovic and Adelaide Clemens, has been announced on the eve of the Toronto International Film Festival, where Chartier will undoubtedly try to tempt the distribution crowd. Written and directed by Mark L. Mann, the film tracks a day in the life of John (Reeves) and two beautiful companions as they immerse themselves in sex, drugs and indecision. Chartier also has the Rachel Weisz-starrer The Whistleblower at the festival. One of Chartier's other projects, the Sheldon Turner-directed drama By Virtue Fall, might be in for a change of the original intended cast of Colin Farrell and Eric Bana. Farrell fell out, and talks have been ongoing with Chartier's Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner. Renner's commitment to starring alongside...

So is this why Sad Keanu is sad? Keanu Reeves, who's been spotted on more than one occasion this summer moping around New York City, has will star in the indie drama Generation Um... about a group of aimless New Yorkers "immersed in sex, drugs and indecision." (Kinda sounds like my life but with a lot more sex and drugs.) Reeves will begin production on the film today along with actors Bojana Novakovic (Mel Gibson's daughter in Edge Of Darkness) and Adelaide Clemens (X-men...

Here's a look at some interesting and/or otherwise noteworthy projects that were recently added to IMDbPro's database of development titles:
Generation Um -- Keanu Reeves is set to star in this indie feature set in New York's lower east side. Written and directed by Finishing Heaven's Mark Mann, the film is expected to begin filming soon (maybe in your apartment?).
The Girl on the Landing -- Gosford Park scribe Julian Fellowes is serving up another romantic thriller with producer Robert Jones. The film based on Paul Torday's novel centers on young couple whose mundane life is shaken up by the husband's strange hallucinations.
Man Made Man -- David Duchovny and Téa Leoni's have optioned Pagan Kennedy's book that involves, "two sex changes, one love affair, and a twentieth-century medical revolution." The pair don't plan to star in the project, but will produce through their company And Then Productions along with Patina Pictures.
Hellraiser: Revelations -- While the remake of the '80s Clive Barker classic has stalled, Dimension is fast-tracking a straight-to-DVD installment to help keep its fans on pins and needles (and apparently help the studio retain the rights to the franchise). TV's La Femme Nikita star Peta Wilson toplines the project from director Victor Garcia.
