First episode: "The Devil's Donkey"
10 years old Vincenzo Pani arrives in Sardegna with his parents. They are moving there because his father Marco got a job as teacher in the junior high school of a little village on the mountains. Grown up in Rome, the kid only knows the island through the tales of his old grandfather who taught him the language as well. During a stormy encounter with a band of local brats, Vincenzo bets that he will arrive at school on top of a beautiful white horse. One night an old woman who's babysitting him for a while, tells Vincenzo the legend of the devil's donkey: the devil promised that he will grant any wish to the person who will bring back his stolen donkey. That night mysterious presences visit Vincenzo's room and attract him outdoor. Two midgets, Brulla and Bellu, offer their help to the kid, suggesting him to catch the magic donkey and bring it to the devil, in exchange for a white horse. In the blink of an eye they are on top of a high mountain, from where the midgets give him directions to complete his journey to the Barren Lands, explaining him the trials hell have to face in order to accomplish his mission.
Second Episode: "Sa Regula"
Every morning at dawn, Conca Niedda, Efisio's black and white little goat, wakes up the kids parents and harasses the neighbors bleating with hunger. Maestro Trudu, Efisio's father, doesn't want to confess the truth to his child despite of his wife's pry: Conca Niedda is going to be their Christmas Dinner. Time passes by and one night Conca Niedda escapes from the basement and destroys the neighbor's flowers. Maestro Trudu convinces his 8 years old son that the time has come to bring Conca Niedda back to the mountains where she belongs. He will be able to visit her whenever he wants. But in the sheep-fold of tziu Carrulu there's no freedom for the little goat, that will end up soon in Mastro Trudu's freezer. Life goes on in the Trudus' house, until one day Efisio finds a frozen goat. He locks himself in his room and refuses to go to school. Maestro Trudu, who doesn't want to confess the truth, promises Efisio that he will show him his goat alive and free in the flock. Maestro Trudu persuades tziu Carrulu to dye a little goats hair to make it look like Conca Niedda and reassure the kid. But Efisio who's not deceived by the camouflage, takes his revenge on the cynical and untruthful adults world, in a very personal way.
