A woman is stuffing feathers into a mattress. Another woman comes over to quarrel, and soon they are kicking, shoving and throwing feathers at each other.
When I think of Lumiere films, comedy does not jump into my mind. This is despite the fact that one of the two best remembered films from their first show is THE SPRINKLER SPRINKLED. Usually I think of the actualities, scenes of the vanished 19th Century, magnificent compositions and excellent early understanding of how to present movement in a manner that is understandable. All that is here; indeed, the obscuring nature of the clouds of feather may be an early example of involving the audience in the creative project, by forcing them to imagine things not clearly seen.
