Kevin Costner’s falling-out with Taylor Sheridan and leaving Yellowstone might prove to be one of the biggest turning points of his entire career. An iconic Western actor, Costner put everything on making his own movies instead of finishing Sheridan’s saga, and since that decision, fans have been wondering whether it was worth the price he paid himself and made everyone else pay as well.
Kevin Costner Risked It All for Horizon

In the past years, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone was his biggest project, having him play the lead role of John Dutton, the show’s ultimate patriarch. But being the lead star in someone else’s series didn’t seem good enough for him.

The series is known for its relatability while simultaneously creating a deeply captivating story. Unfortunately, since the star left the cast, many have wondered about the future of both the show and Costner.

Kevin Costner was a rising young actor featuring in minor roles in the early 80s. The future superstar was on the verge of stardom by the mid-80s and was cast in two films that would become his breakout hits. First, he was cast in Roger Donaldson’s action thriller No Way Out. What to expect from Cannes 2024? The global selection offers critics plenty to write about — after all, this is the festival d’auteurs. But this year’s edition may be light on the red carpet glitz that lures celebrities to the Côte d’Azur for eye-popping photo memes and offshore yacht revels. Remember Madonna’s 1991 pointy Gaultier bustier? Elizabeth Taylor holding her white dog as “Cliffhanger” star Sylvester Stallone climbed the steps to meet her at the top? Such viral moments are what Cannes director Thierry Fremaux dreams of.
High-octane stars expected to hit the Palais photo gauntlet include two-time Oscar-winner Emma Stone, who stars in all three stories in competition title “Kinds of Kindness” (Searchlight), Yorgos Lanthimos’ edgy follow-up to $100-million grosser “Poor Things.” Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth will add some sizzle for out-of-competition prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.), George Miller’s rollercoaster return after 2015’s Oscar-winning “Mad Max: Fury Road.

For those keeping score, and we know Neon is, it’s four Palme d’Or victories for Neon, who bought “Anatomy of a Fall” out of last year’s Cannes Film Festival. The boutique shingle didn’t stop there, and also acquired “Robot Dreams” and “Perfect Days” as well. Netflix plunked down $11 million for “May December,” and the festival produced sales for other buzzy titles like “Jeanne du Barry” and “The Taste of Things.” All that, and with the specter of the writers strike hanging over it.
So what will sell big this year? Many of the titles in competition as part of this year’s Official Selection are up for grabs, even as Neon, A24, Mubi, and Searchlight are all arriving with at least one contender in the main race. We’ll be tracking everything that gets bought below throughout the festival and beyond.

Amidst all the drama surrounding Kevin Costner and Yellowstone, one name that’s often thrown around is Costner’s passion project, Horizon. Fans are not happy about this two-part Western Saga, especially after how the Yellowstone finale is currently playing out, but it’s too soon to judge this project harshly. Costner has proven himself capable of handling a Western project as a director and actor with his 1990 Oscar-winning film Dances With Wolves.

Interestingly, the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves actor was so confident in his project that he was unwilling to change a thing about it despite three directors rejecting it. It paid off heavily as the film became the fourth highest-grossing film of 1990 along with its seven Oscar wins.

Yellowstone star Kevin Costner has said he would consider working with the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, again despite reports of conflict. The Emmy-winning actor recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his latest film, Horizon: An American Saga, where he shared an update on his relationship with Sheridan. “No, we haven’t [talked],” Costner said, referencing his involvement in Yellowstone‘s final episodes. Costner, who played the lead role of John Dutton on the hit neo-Western drama, previously left the series amid a rumored falling out with Sheridan over salary and scheduling. The two-time Oscar winner’s four-part film series, Horizon: An American Saga, was said to be a major sticking point. Back in March, it was reported that Costner wanted back in for the final season, even if only in a cameo role. However, Puck‘s Matthew Belloni claimed “no discussions” had taken place about the actor’s return, as...

A French collective representing the interests of French film festival workers has called for a general strike of “all employees of the Cannes Film Festival and of its sidebars.”
The Sous les écrans la dèche (Broke Behind the Screens) collective made the call in a public statement Monday.
The group has long been sounding the alarm about the precarious nature of film festival work, which typically involves short-term freelance contracts. But unlike other so-called intermediate workers in the entertainment industry, many festival workers are not covered by France’s unemployment insurance program, meaning they do not qualify for unemployment benefits in between jobs or projects.
The Sous les écrans noted that the latest set of benefit reforms, set to go through July 1, will further tighten the rules for employees.

With the release of The Fall Guy this weekend, the summer movie season is finally upon us. While it’s a thinner summer than usual due to the dual writer and actors strike bringing movies to a standstill for much of 2023, there should still be a lot of stuff worth checking out, even if the summer seems short of anything that can aspire to Barbenheimer levels of success. Yesterday, we teased some of our most anticipated horror movies, so now we’re tackling the rest of the blockbusters in our 2024 summer movie preview!
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (May 10)
In my opinion, there’s never been a bad Planet of the Apes movie. Going all the way back to the classic 1968 original and its four sequels, through Tim Burton’s remake and the Caesar trilogy from Fox, all of the movies have at least been interesting. With Disney now owning 20th Century Studios,...

It might feel like we just rang in the new year last week, but believe it or not, summer is already here -- at the movies, anyway.
With the release of the Ryan Gosling-Emily Blunt action-romcom The Fall Guy, Hollywood's most lucrative season has officially arrived.
But the calendar is light on sure bets this year, and that's mostly because of recent box office trends that have left studio execs in a very uncertain position.
As you probably recall, Barbie and Oppenheimer were the summer box office success stories of 2023.
In retrospect, it seems like a foregone conclusion that two films that so dominated the zeitgeist would also win big commercially.
After all, prior to last year, you had to go all the way back to 2010 for a year in which the highest-grossing movie was neither a sequel nor a superhero flick.

It’s not over ’til it’s over. And Kevin Costner insists that he’s not necessarily done with creator Taylor Sheridan or Yellowstone.
The fifth season of Yellowstone has been set to be the show’s last, with alleged scheduling conflicts that have star Kevin Costner leaving the show. Right now, Yellowstone is planning to air its final episodes in November before launching a new, Costner-free spinoff series, 2024, in December.
But Costner, who plays patriarch John Dutton on the show, claims those final episodes haven’t come together just yet.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his latest film, Horizon: An American Saga, Costner said that he still hasn’t connected with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan on making those final episodes.
“No, we haven’t [talked],” Costner said. However, he added that he’s open to working with Sheridan in the future, whether it’s Yellowstone-related or something new.

Kevin Costner is ready to return to the director’s chair with the epic Western Horizon. Split into two parts, the saga is reportedly set before and after the events of the American Civil War. After over twenty years, the film sees the Oscar-award-winning filmmaker returning as a director. His last film as a director was Open Range.
Costner’s epic saga has been years in the making and has been the subject of controversy due to the actor’s departure from Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone to work on the film. However, one element of the two-part movie might work against the film’s success. According to a new report, the film’s first chapter has a runtime of three hours.

Say hello to sequel season.
That might as well be the nickname for this summer’s slate of potential blockbusters. Over the next four months, Hollywood is rolling out what it hopes will be a winning mix of follow-ups, reboots and spinoffs from tested franchises like “Despicable Me” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as it looks to reinvigorate the shaky movie theater business.
Last summer flipped the script: New properties, such as “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” ruled, while entries in aging series, like “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “Mission Impossible 7,” missed the mark. This time out, the tried-and-true may yet prevail. Original offerings like Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt’s action-comedy “The Fall Guy” and Kevin Costner’s Western “Horizon: An American Saga” will attempt to lure audiences. Kevin Costner’s passion project will be a two-part summer release this year. The actor has returned to the director’s seat for the first time in over twenty years for Horizon: An American Saga, which is set to be told in two chapters. Costner began work on this story in 1988 and he has more movies planned. The main character that he invented for this film in 1988 was so important to him that he even named his son, Hayes, after him. He hopes the movies can be a big franchise and that years from now, people can binge-watch hours of Horizon in theaters.
Costner, who is not known to be a franchise actor, is planning to do what most Hollywood tentpole movies aim for — go for that summer movie release date. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 will be riding into theaters this June, and in a recent report from Deadline...

Being a part of a television show as celebrated as Yellowstone is equivalent to winning the lottery for any actor. In light of this, the Yellowstone cast has mostly kept quiet following Kevin Costner’s unexpected departure during the second half of Season 5.
How do the remaining cast members feel about Costner’s exit from Paramount’s show? Did the cast feel abandoned by The Untouchables star because he left some storylines unfinished for his Yellowstone character (John Dutton)? Well, Costner’s former co-stars from the series are reportedly unhappy about his departure and the fallout from it, according to a report from Life & Style.

The universe of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone has kept the fans engrossed in the arc of John Dutton and his clan for virtually a century. From 1923 to 2024, the legacy and time-honored traditions of the Dutton clan have fascinated the audience for years and now, the time has finally come to bid goodbye to the original series that started it all — from Taylor Sheridan’s rise to popularity to Kevin Costner’s return to fame.
Yellowstone [Credit: Paramount Network]Now, despite the war of creative differences that has split up the original duo, fans are reluctantly hopeful that the Oscar-winning actor will return for a handful of more episodes to give his arc a proper closure. Although the chances of that are slim, stranger things have happened recently in the world of entertainment business.

It's been a full year since Paramount announced that Kevin Costner was leaving Yellowstone. With the second half of Season 5 being the final one, the news was incredibly disappointing for fans of one of the most important Westerns of the 21st century.
Moreover, the mere fact of Costner's departure has caused an incredible amount of controversy and speculation around the already cult series: is Taylor Sheridan or Costner himself to blame, how does the former intend to deal with John Dutton without his actor, how much will all this affect the quality of the finale?
All in all, even now, in 2024, it's causing quite a few controversies, as the ongoing drama behind the scenes is still shrouded in mystery. Reports at the end of March suggested that Costner would return to Yellowstone after all, but that was followed by other reports saying that we could still see new scenes with...

Taylor Sheridan may not have much to show for his decades of acting career but slaving away at the Hollywood mill did teach him a lesson or two. He then used these lessons to bring Hollywood down to its knees. Churning out award-worthy original content, prequels, and spin-offs at an ungodly pace, Sheridan makes sure the studios perk up as soon as they hear his pen scratching the surface of a paper.
Taylor Sheridan [Photo: Crystal Wise/Fort Worth Magazine]However, Sheridan’s start at the frontlines of television and streaming was not inherently without its flaws. After suffering through an ordeal while securing a platform for Yellowstone, the director encountered and overcame massive obstacles in closing the series arc. His future spin-offs have been easier to pull off, but Sheridan once came incredibly close to losing his deal with Harrison Ford.

Kevin Costner’s tenure as John Dutton in Yellowstone came to an abrupt end last year due to creative differences with series creator Taylor Sheridan. After a successful four-and-a-half season run, the show is now at a standstill with Costner’s departure causing a huge problem for its continuity. Filming for the second half of the fifth season has not begun yet.

Ian Bohen is hoping to get fans excited about the forthcoming series finale of Yellowstone.

“Everything will land in a way that is perfectly set,” he continued. “A lot of shows just kind of finish… and they don’t satisfy you. This will be completed in a way that it will make sense.”
Though little has been released about part two of the fifth and final season — after part one premiered last year — The Independent recently reported that production for the rest of the season is set to begin in May, as the scripts are already written.

Luke Grimes isn’t mad at his Yellowstone costar Kevin Costner for exiting the hit show.
Grimes plays the youngest son of Costner’s character, John Dutton III, and addressed Costner’s departure in a recent interview with The Independent.
“Whatever happened there is unfortunate if it’s changed anything about how the show was going to unfold,” Grimes said. He added that he knew Costner had become “busy” with his “passion projects,” like his upcoming film, Horizon: An American Saga.
“At a certain point, you gotta do what you gotta do, man,” Grimes said. “You gotta do what you love.”
Paramount announced last June that it would be ending Yellowstone after five seasons. The decision came just a few months after Deadline reported that the network was trying to end the hit Western because Costner wanted to spend less time filming.
Costner hasn’t completely closed the door on a return.

Kevin Costner is planning to shoot Horizon: An American Saga Part 3 and Part 4
Earlier this week, news landed that the UK will definitely be getting Kevin Costner’s upcoming Horizon: An American Saga on the big screen. Costner has co-written, starring and directs the first two films in a planned four movie saga, and both will be in cinemas this summer.
Still, Horizon: An American Saga has cost a reported $100m a film, and Kevin Costner’s plans to shoot the third and fourth chapter looked to have been a little bit delayed. There were reports that he was rattling tins just to tie up the financing, after putting substantial funds into the project himself.
The thinking was that he’d thus wait until the release of Horizon: An American Saga – Part 1 and Horizon: An American Saga – Part 2 before trying to get Part 3 and Part 4 moving. Not so, though. Having...

Finally: we’ve had confirmation that Horizon: An American Saga, from Kevin Costner, will be heading to UK cinemas this summer.
Long time readers of this site may be aware of my personal levels of excitement surrounded Kevin Costner’s return to directing for the first time since 2003’s Open Range. He’s going for it too with Horizon: An American Saga, a planned collection of four films, of which two have been shot and are being readied for release.
We’ve known for some time that the films – the first of which debuts at the Cannes Film Festival – will be heading to cinemas in the US courtesy of Warner Bros (via New Line). The non-us rights situation had been less clear, but we finally have an answer: Warner Bros is also distributing here in the UK.
What’s more, it’s going to be putting the first two films out into cinemas.

As the saying goes, ‘every great man is inspired by another great man to reach their full potential’. Well, this sentiment could not ring truer than in the case of Gene Hackman & Kevin Costner.
For the most part, viewers recognized Costner from the hit drama series Yellowstone, but he was popular throughout the 1990s for other roles as well. Beginning his career as an extra in low-budget productions, he progressed to more mainstream roles in acclaimed flicks, including Dances with Wolves and No Way Out.

Starring Sebastian Maniscalco and Omar J. Dorsey, the comedy series follows bookie Danny (Maniscalco) as he and his partner, former NFL star Ray (Dorsey), romp around Los Angeles trying to keep their illegal sports-betting operation in play.
Season 2 presumably will show [Spoiler Alert] whether Danny can win back the affections of his wife Sandra (Andrea Anders), after his Super Bowl win seems to have torn them apart, as well as Ray dealing with the fallout of his mother’s wedding, which saw the groom seemingly die at the altar.
Dickey will play Sandra’s (Anders) mother.
Bookie also stars Vanessa Ferlito as Danny’s side-hustling sister Lorraine, Jorge Garcia as reluctantly reformed drug dealer-turned-soccer expert Hector and Maxim Swinton as Sandra’s 10-year-old son.

Who would have thought that Chris Hemsworth and Kevin Costner would be vying for the same roles?
The “Thor” alum, 40, and “Yellowstone” star, 69, both were looking to lead an “abstract and interesting” indie romance drama. The unnamed feature will be directed by Costner, who ended up just casting himself in the role.
“There was a movie, a script that I’d read and loved and was like, ‘I want to get that,’ and then someone said, ‘Kevin Costner has that [role],'” Hemsworth told Entertainment Tonight. “I’d love [to have] him as a director. I was like, ‘Goddamnit!’ [I spent] an hour the other day trying to convince him, and he was like, ‘I’m doing it, kid.’ Didn’t work. I didn’t get the part.”
Hemsworth shared that the role is for a “horse wrangler” in the “small story about a man and a woman.” While Hemsworth did not disclose the title of the project,...

Kevin Costner seems to have another movie as director lined up, outside of Horizon: An American Saga – more here.
Later this year, Kevin Costner’s return to the director’s chair arrives on the big screen, with the release of Horizon: An American Saga. In fact, two separate Horizon: An American Saga movies will be in US cinemas this summer, with Costner co-writing, starring and directing both. He then has plans to make two more films in the series.
By the sounds of things though, he has a smaller project lined up that he’s also looking to direct. The metaphorical cat has been let out of the also-metaphorical bag by Chris Hemsworth (pictured here in Netflix’s Extraction), who’s been chatting about a role that he didn’t get.
In conversation with Entertainment Tonight, he revealed that he’d been chasing a role after falling in love with a script.
