Plenty of action and laughs
Rob13319 January 2024
I wasn't sure what to expect going into The Brothers Sun but it has everything you want in a good action comedy. Plenty of action, laughs, drama, etc. Outside of Michelle Yeoh, it's made up of a cast of mostly unknowns that are not familiar in America. That should change after this series. Most of them should move on to bigger things here after their job in this. This is just a beautifully acted and written show. I was hooked from the first episode to the last. I was so hooked that I ended up binging all eight episodes as fast as possible. This show knows exactly what it wants to be and doesn't stray and add needless filler just to get to 8 episodes. It's addicting from start to finish. I would not be surprised in the least if this show ends up winning some awards. It's that good.

Just a really fun show
Supermanfan-139 January 2024
The Brothers Sun was better than I thought it would be. The story is about an eldest son of a Taiwanese triad who returns home to Los Angeles after his father is shot. He returns to protect his mother and brother, who has no idea that the family is in the gangster business. It really is a fun watch with a talented cast who all do a great job pulling you into their world. It seems that Michelle Yeoh can do absolutely no wrong. Everything she's in these days is pure gold. This is her first role since winning an Oscar for best actress in Everything Everywhere All at Once and I think she's even better in this. I would like to see another season of this.

FINALLY Netflix Got It Right!!!
anoran1088 January 2024
After a series of mediocre shows, Netflix nailed it with this one. I was one of the few that enjoyed Cowboy Bebop and was disappointed that Netflix caved into fan boy pressure and dumped it. Cowboy Bebop was flawed but it was a high energy, fun sci-fi romp. I've only watched 2 episodes but I'm a big fan. Don't even get me started when they dumped Sense8. Michelle Yeoh elevates everything just by being in it and so far, so good. The supporting cast is solid, the fight scenes are fun and the goofiness factor is spot on. It's a great show to get lost in and not overthink. I hope they renew for a second season. If Netflix produces more original series like this, I'm in it for the long haul!

Great show
Plazeebo7 January 2024
I hate when they mix comedy with action. It is very rarely done great. But this is actually not that bad on occasion, when it's not done by the comedy-plants. Like when the action guy cleans up the action woman's appartment, or when Michelle Yeoh does a "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me" scene.

I found it brave of Netflix in this age of diversity to only have Asian actors. I would have thought Hollywood would insist on a diverse cast.

The story is pleasantly simple. When I watch a streaming show, I want to be entertained. When I want to use my brain, I read a book.

Easy to understand story, great action and fight choreography. Occasionally great humor - better than most comedy shows these days anyway.

What's not to like. This is, for now, the best show on Netflix this year.

Wasted potential, inconsistency and poorly written
LetThemEatHay12 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
As an Asian I was really excited to see this all Asian cast and really wanted to like this series. The pilot episode started out well building tension but then it just goes downhill from there. None of the characters have the motivation it should have, they're all over the place, the arcs feels disjointed, and I really wish they didn't make the protagonist Bruce so dumb because he ended up being really unlikeable.

This series had so much potential. Hong Kong and Taiwan have done similar series/movies so the blueprint is there so I don't understand how they mess up this bad.

Plots doesn't make sense too. Are we supposed to root for the DA and Charles getting together or are we supposed to root against them? Why does the mom hate the dad? Why did the dad not financially support his wife and son all these years in America but when he got hurt they were immediately on his mind and send his oldest son. He clearly cares about them, knows where they are so why the inconsistency?

And the reason they had to leave Taiwan, the whole rolodex plot is so absurd. If the wife is that ambitious she wouldn't raise such a useless son, she wouldn't be the one who cares enough to want to take him away. The triad leaders barely had any security, the house was unguarded, no security systems, nothing is making sense. It feels like I'm watching a series created by children.

I did enjoy the violence and the humor. Charles & his mom did most of the heavy lifting, the supporting cast really could improve. Off the top of my head I can think of 10 Asian actors who can more convincingly play the various triad bosses.

So much potential wasted.

Bruce is the realest
hazard1117 January 2024
I went into this show for Michelle Yeoh. I stayed for the Sun family. I had read some reviews in between so I was prepared to dislike Bruce but surprisingly I could understand him. He's basically the odd man out and he's barely surviving but one thing to note here is the central theme of "Protecting your family". He is real with how he reacts because who wouldn't? Honestly I would've been more annoying especially if my family is just determined to shelter me so what else can you do but focus on your life? He's dopey but makes it up with his determination to protect his family. As Michelle said about her son. He's not weak he's just a good person.

We get one pov from Charles the older brother, the experienced one vs the sheltered younger brother and they both clash. I like that dynamic of like big guy with the small guy trope. Where in the big guy isn't only a badass but also a big softie and the small guy isn't there to be protected but can kick ass too. Add to that family bonding. I loved the development between them made me wish to also have an older brother. I honestly feel so bad for Charles. His character is by far my favorite and hopefully if this gets renewed we get to see more development of his "real" personality.

The show is a mix of action comedy. It doesn't really take itself that seriously. I do wish the action has little bit more... bite? It also got slow early on but picks up again come episode 5. Overall a good binge, nothing too heavy. Just some light family action drama.

Bruce is annoying.
Nightmarelogic16 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The Brothers Sun is one of those shows on Netflix that I would like more choices then "like" "very like" and "don't like" because I kinda liked it. Or more to the point I really wanted to murder Bruce who I thought was written TOO MUCH like a moralistic coward. Not much changed for him through what looks like season 1 of a continued story. There was no real growth for him. While there was plenty of growth for Charles. Which made his character far more interesting.

Honestly this story is fine but Bruce is a real problem throughout but Charles almost makes up for it. He has multiple fun storylines. His relationship with the lady prosecutor is interesting. Plus his love of cooking adds depth to his character.

Great TV!
wildgreencat9 January 2024
This show borrows from the themes any fan of 90s Jackie Chan movies or even Chinese movies from Hong Kong- a little funny, tongue in cheek, violent emotional romance. Well written and choreographed, I enjoyed all the references and carefully signposted references to living life- Asian. From demanding parents, to cut throat women who use both brain and brawn to get what they want, to sons trying to find their way through societal expectations and stereotypes... All delivered in humourous witty dialogues. Very entertaining and ofcourse it requires some suspension of belief in it's story line and thank God that's the case. Who needs reality in a world such as ours!

6 only because of the endless plot holes
ukgreek11 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This show should be a 7 or 8, I agree. But omg, it's plot hole after plot hole, bad or inconsistent character development, and I'm sorry, Sam Song Li, but your Bruce is just plain annoying 80% of the time.

Most of the acting is great, the fight scenes are believably professional, and the general storyline is pretty good. High production value, for sure. Humor is nicely, if unobtrusively, interwoven. I'd like to see a little more of that, because every single one of the actors is capable of good comedy.

It just demands too much suspension of disbelief. Allowing an unknown, unvetted person into a safe house is only one of at least a dozen of those types of failures. They all could've been avoided and the show would be that much better. Hoping for a far better S2.

Get rid of Bruce
umuterdonmezzz17 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This show could have been great if it wasn't for him. Its really fun overall just needs minor tweaks on bruce's character. He is trying to save them from themselves? Come on now those people kill 10 people on a daily basis, they are evil for God's sake, there is no redemption. Please leave that stupid idea behind you guys. Him accepting his family and trying to be gangsta but suck at it would've been a lot funnier than him being a little rat. Other than him the characters are great and they have enough depth to build upon. Action is really nice and over the top sometimes which feels like a homage to asian cinema.

Great series throughout
burntoutboy4 January 2024
I started watching this mainly because Michelle Yeoh was in it. I've only watched 2 episodes so far and she's not been in it much however it has been a blast!

Great fighting sequences, good acting and surprisingly funny. The 2nd episode caught me off guard with it's funny and unique fighting sequences.

The chemistry between the 2 main actors is promising and hopefully gets to grow throughout the series.

The story is ok so far, a little hard to follow but I'm sure it will be explained better the more episodes I watch.

Will update my review once I've finished the series but from what I've seen so far, this is a surprise hit for me.

Update: this is a great series with great twists, action, acting and comedy throughout (all be it stereotypical, it works most of the time) Here's hoping for a season 2!

Not a 6 or an 8
TheWordYo18 January 2024
6.5 There's so many positives from this show. Michelle is class as always. Action scenes are dope, seen someone kicking off about them, they really missed out on some quality 80s movies.

Score is pretty slick too and there is some funny bits.

Now the really silly things are the brother Bruce, like for real NO ONE behaves that way.

Not sure if it was due to the strike why the story is so up and down. If Bruce didn't suck so much and some of the story being so predictable a much higher rating would be justified, I'd love to see more in the future but really dial back the lamé characters cause in this world they just ruin what could be epic.

Great start - miserable from episode to episode
ddcdqdf15 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I really fell in love with this series in the beginning. It reminded me sometimes on the series called beef because it was hilarious and has the same dark humor. The series had good action scenes in the beginning and I was so excited to binge it on few days. BUT - how the turntables. Every episode is getting weaker and weaker, especially when the series starts to end. (Last 3 Episodes)

The acting is flat and unauthentic. Please don't pretend you're worried or try to cry when you never learned that in your acting school, bro. That looks cringe and the viewers don't buy it.

And what are you writers doing? The characters starting the same dialogues over and over and the action fighting choreography is absolute cheap. You see that these actor (the pro ass assassins) never held a knife in a hand and it looks so cringe.

I mean the last 3 episodes are reminding more of a cheap family soap. And the little brother is bugging me so much, that I hoped that he died in the series that this pain of cringeness have an end.

I would rated this series normally a solid 7-8 because it has his moments but like I said, the last 3 episodes was full of dumbness decisions, unbelievable and unrealistic storyline it's not getting more than a 3.

And please explain that for me: Police know you killed so many people and still let you go? Please WHAT? Especially with declining the ridiculous and unrealistic deal (what obviously was such a joke, like huh?) I don't get it. I'm so mad.

Loved it!
isminimccaig5 January 2024
It is what you expect and more! Surprisingly funny. Really good acting really good writing. Just enough fighting with realistic choreography. Some shows you know in the first 5 minutes it is going to be good this is one of those shows. Good production they spent money on this and it shows. Characters are not at all one sided and relatable. Subtitles are hard being dyslexic but there isn't too many. Michelle Yeoh is amazing in everything that she does. I love her in this show as a mother. She is delicate and strong at the same time. Watching the dynamic between mother and adult children is very interesting.

A strong start, but a loses the thread
charlierichardsn13 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed the first few episodes of this series. The premise is fun, the performances are good, and the action is all really well choreographed. Charles in particular (sorry not checking the castlist) is fantastic in the fights, and really strong dramatically.

It felt, around the midpoint, that all the major plot devices were tee'd up. Bruce's good heart would be weighed against his ambition. Charles would have to face the reality of what he has done, without his father's influence. And with the Boxer's, there was a really nice setup for a 'violence begets violence' message. They mentioned that the Triad used to fight oppression then became the oppressor, so there was an interesting comparison between them. In this shows context, a plot dealing with violent revolutionaries becoming oppressive institutions is particularly compelling.

This all seemed to be a big missed opportunity, and Grace's character really didn't get the ending she deserved. For her to be the leader of the Boxers was confusing as hell, given her age, but she could definitely have been a parallel to Charles; being coerced into violence from a young age by circumstance and community. Both of them locked in a fight against each other, while being very similar. Essentially both stuck fighting for their father.

It seems wild that this wasn't the case, I mean the way she described the Boxers as a anonymised diasporic group that sets up community hubs across the world etc. Sounded SO SIMILAR to the triad. I was really expecting the reveal to be that they were funded by one of the gangs from the start. And this was all part of the endless cycle of violence, perpetuated by the greed of people like ba ba sun.

Maybe I just totally misread the plot, but it seemed like the story was honing in on a message about the price of ambition and greed. The pain that created the Boxers. Alexis double crossing Charles for her career, shattering the most meaningful relationship either of them had. TK (who I'm baffled survived) taking constant risks for money.

And through all that would be Bruce, shaped by the decision his mother made to abandon all that. A choice made to provide at least one of her sons a loving home. Faced with the temptation of money and power, like he was tempted into selling drugs, he would need to make the same choice his mother did. To ultimately place more value in a peaceful life than in the glamorous, but cruel life of the triad.

But this isn't what happens. The boxers remain an anomalous group with no backing, or self awareness. Bruce is never offered his moral choice, instead using violence against violence by shooting his father, and enjoying the excesses of a lifestyle bought with blood.

Most bizzarely of all, their mother didn't want peace for her son, but actually just wanted all the power herself but couldn't get it because of sexism. So she leaves to become the next slaver queen of east Asia. And poor Charles goes from being an enforcer for one insane parent, to being an enforcer for the other insane parent.

I really enjoyed the first part of this series. I'm just really confused about where the story ended up going, and really dissatisfied with the resolutions all the characters ended up getting.

Genuinely a lot to like about it though, the action was for the most part fantastic. I'm just hung up on the story because it really fell flat.

Shakespearean Like Show
lakings9711 January 2024
The Brothers Sun is a Netflix series created by Barron Wu and Brad Falchuk who also was the person behind Glee and American Horror Story. This is a Shakespearean.style show filled with action fighting sequences much like Jackie Chan along with John Wick killing spree throughout the show. The script follows Charles Sun, a Taipei.gangster's son, who must travel to Los Angeles to protect his brother and his mother after his father is ruthlessly shot and left in a coma. Loved the comedic style of writing and the culinary journey in the San Gabriel area. The wonderful cast is lead by Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chief, Sam Song Li, and Johnny Kou. Overall great first season, wonderful funny script and it was great to see my old school grounds of Woodbury University. Definitely add this to your list.

A Disappointing Series with a Weak Link - Bruce
tvboxng7 January 2024
The Brothers Sun is a new series that has recently hit our screens, and while it has its moments, it ultimately falls short of expectations. The main issue lies in one of the main characters, Bruce, who single-handedly ruins the series with his lacklustre performance and weak character development and unrealistically annoying twists.

In the series, Bruce is a character who makes annoying decisions that don't seem realistic towards the end of the series. This not only makes it difficult to connect with him as a character but also takes away from the overall enjoyment of the show.

One of the main problems with Bruce is that his character arc is not well-developed. He is a one-dimensional character who lacks any real depth or complexity. This makes it hard to understand his motivations and makes his actions seem contrived and unrealistic.

Another issue with Bruce is that he makes decisions that don't seem to make sense. For example, towards the end of the series, he makes a decision that puts his family in danger, and it feels like it was done for the sake of the plot rather than being a natural progression of his character. This makes it hard to take the series seriously and takes away from the overall enjoyment of the show.

The series also suffers from poor pacing and a lack of direction. It seems like the writers are unsure of where they want to take the story, and as a result, the series feels disjointed and confusing. This is particularly evident in the way that Bruce's character is handled. He is given very little to do but whine and whine and play dumb the entire series, and his actions often feel forced and contrived.

In conclusion, The Brothers Sun is a cool idea for a series that is let down by a weak link - Bruce. His one-dimensional character and lack of development plus an unrealistic annoying behaviour make it hard to connect with him or to care about his journey and quite literally leave a bad taste in the mouth. The series also suffers from poor pacing and a lack of direction, which only adds to the frustration of watching it. If you're looking for a new series to watch just to pass time then go for it but by episode 7 I gave up as it became unbearable.

Close to perfect
bjornrhein10 January 2024
Finally a good serie on Netflix, almost giving up that one, and what a show - I dont want this to end , I could see this like every day in 100 years, usually I dont like action comedy, but here it works toghetter in harmony , I really enjoyed the dry humor in this serie, it was smart and not to much and all the time like similar movies often are

Its not perfect , And the negative reviews are not wrong when they complain on the fighting scenes , its just on schoolplay level sometimes , it strange they did not made that better, but probably money issue , also they should cut out the love story and less this Bruce character who is the weak link, and last episode was just flat , so this could have been much sharper

But its forgiven, I had a great time and could easy start to watch it all over again now ,, great serie, loved it.

The Brothers Sun - 6/10 - Could Have Been So Much Better
williegannon27 January 2024
The Brothers Sun could have been so much more. It starts out with a lot of promise. The first four episodes are very good. A nice mix of action and some comedy. The problems start once family dynamics enter the mix.

Then the show just can't decide on what it wants to be and the last four episodes are an uneven mix of action, badly placed comedy and either over acted or misplaced drama. The main characters sway between the lines given but even they can't save some scenes.

Hardly the most original of stories, and the premise was really good until it wasn't. Probably enough here for a Season 2, but it will need to improve significantly to get a Season 3.

Good action story with one extremely stupid character.
maneetmusic13 January 2024
A very well made series when it comes to action sequences and a good plot. The Taiwanese gangster family drama with honour and obligations that spills over to America, adds freshness to the Netflix range.

Michelle Yeoh adds class to a decent cast. In fact, she soars above the rest as a Triad member in hiding, an over protective Mom, a lady that's yards ahead of everyone with her wits.

But in Bruce Sun, they probably made the stupidest, most idiotic, most exasperating character in the history of Netflix series.

They were probably trying to go for a Jackie Chan style bumbling, funny but good hearted character. But they ended up making a cowardly, unreliable, disloyal, extremely stupid character.

You never feel sorry for him, never connect with him or even empathise with him. I wonder why Sam Song Li didn't ask the script writers to do better.

Since Bruce is so central to the story, the presence of this character 'almost' single handedly spoils an otherwise brilliant plot and a well constructed storyline.

'Almost' being the operative word. But the story, Michelle Yeoh, Justin Chein, the action sequences, the Taiwanese American flavour; rescue the series.

Mixed experience
JellyThyName8 January 2024
Too much forced comedy with Bruce's character- he is the weakest part of the show and is central to it. Bruce is just a fool- the best part was him getting a minor beatdown. The action sequences are decent. The writing is mixed, it's missing something and Bruce is probably the one who drags the show down. Charles and Yeoh are the stars of this show, if there was less comedy this show would have probably faired better allowing higher stakes and more intense moments. The foundations are there, but it's missing something- if it was more serious it would have probably been a better show, seems like there were shades of everything everywhere all at once which does not belong in a show about triads.

The Brothers Sun
valdezisabelle-4666914 January 2024
The show is fast, paced and funny (and a little gruesome ) and has a lot of action The fight scenes are fun & well choreographed but Bruce!! Bruce is so annoying. I cannot stand him and his character is ruining the show. He's so inept and he never ever ever ever gets better. He's pathetic. Alexis is a pretty annoying unlikable character as well . Michelle Yeoh & Justin Chien are fantastic ! Worth watching for them. The other actors are all good and the show is cast well .I like the setting in LA & Taiwan too All in all , the show is worth watching If the Bruce character wasn't so unbelievably annoying I could rate the show higher.

Interesting family dynamics
tarikuyum10 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The concept and scenario of the series is intriguing, secret lifes of half of the family and the normal life of the other half colliding in an interesting way. But the sillyness of Bruce is overwhelming sometimes. It sometimes feels like he is being this silly intentionally and it ruins the flow of the series.

Other characters are quite interesting even though some of those are lack of character building.

Locations and cinematography looks cool.

But again Bruce is unnecessarily stupid for a kid that is said to be clever. Michelle Yeohs mother portrait is actually quite interesting and cool to watch.

Pure fun with a killer soundtrack
luccaroma11 January 2024
The show was the perfect balance of some really heartbreaking moments coupled with hilarious moments, fantastics twists, and great tense drama. To me, it really has it all.

Michelle Yeoh needs no introduction. She is simply unmatched.

Justin Chien as Charles. Wow, what a guy. Super acting and my God is he handsome!

Whilst I found Bruce annoying he was well acted by Sam Li. Highdee Kuan, Alice Hewkin, and Madison Hu were notably amazing.

The soundtrack by Nick Lee and Nathan Matthew David is fantastic and exactly my taste. So much so, that when I went to Spotify to find the show's playlist, lots of the songs I had already in my own playlists - fantastic!
