Hong Kong- and Paris-based All Rights Entertainment has added “The Thing Behind the Door” to its pre-Cannes and Cannes Market slate of films. The picture is a female-led French horror which is currently shooting and is to be delivered by the fourth quarter of this year.
All Rights pitches the film as a “Lovecraftian creature feature.” The story follows a young widow struggling to make ends meet as World War I rages on. Crippled by grief, feeling unable to keep going without her husband, she resorts to black magic, and is guided by an ancient manuscript. She enjoys success in reviving the dead man, but at a terrible cost.
“Thing” is the feature debut of Fabrice Blin. He is teamed up with experienced producer Fabrice Lambot, whose Phase 4 Productions is behind Monia Chokri’s new film “Babysitter.”

Let’s talk about anthologies. No fun discussion of horror should be without it; it’s always a challenge to successfully pull off a short story, as you’ll see when we dig into another batch of Severin Blu-rays, this time thematically tied together by a love of the format. These discs are for all the shorties out there.
Family Portraits: A Trilogy of America (2003):
I thought we’d start with the dark before we get to the light. The film is actually three separate shorts shot at different points in his career, put together and released as a feature with the subtitle “A Trilogy of America”. For four outcast teens, summer detention means being assigned to clean their high school after a horrific incident. But they are not alone; a macabre gang wearing guises of The Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse – Famine, Pestilence, War and Death – has locked them inside and is hunting them through the school’s ravaged hallways. As the four students battle to survive, each must confront the supernatural echoes of past traumas they have struggled to forget – and may be condemned to relive.

Blood Bags is the kind of film you’d expect to have seen in the mid to late 80s, emanating out of Italy – you see this film is the closest to an Italian horror I’ve seen in some time. Unfortunately it suffers some of the same foibles those films did: in so much as it often doesn’t make sense and is most definitely a case of style over substance. But when that’s the kind of genre fare you’re homaging, is that a bad thing?
Yes, in his first feature (having directed a number of shorts prior), Emiliano Ranzani pays respect to the like of Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci with a film that echoes the work of those directors,...

Ever since its premiere earlier this month in Toronto, Richard Stanley’s Color Out of Space has been eliciting an array of reactions, and to this writer, it is undoubtedly one of the wildest films I’ve seen in 2019, which is why this writer was so excited to speak with Stanley on the heels of the film’s Us premiere at the 2019 Fantastic Fest.
Based on the short story by H. P. Lovecraft, Stanley discussed how his involvement in Color Out of Space came about because of another Lovecraftian project he worked on years ago. “Like everything in life, how this came about was random and strange. It came out of me and making a Lovecraft [adaptation] in short film about four or five years ago, a film called The Mother of Toads, which became the first part of an anthology movie called The Theatre Bizarre. It turned out that the...

Last year, Rlje Films acquired Panos Cosmatos' hallucinatory horror film Mandy (starring Nicolas Cage) for Us distribution, and now they've acquired the Us rights to another Cage-starring, mind-bending movie: Richard Stanley's Color Out of Space, the anticipated adaptation of H.P. Tagline: "Blood is Thicker than Water." Blood Bags is a horror film from Italy. Filmed in at least two languages, this title was recently completed this past Summer, in Italy. Blood Bags stars British actress Makenna Guyler as Tracy, along with: Emanuele Turetta and Marta Tananyan. The film was directed by Emiliano Ranzani, from a script co-written by Davide Mela. Recently, a new trailer and poster were released for Blood Bags; both promotional items can be found here. The trailer is a good one. From sound to shots, everything moves fast in this first clip for Blood Bags. As well, the first trailer shows Tony (Riccardo Leto) and Alex (Turetta) robbing an old mansion. One woman is captured, while another tries to escape. Later, two more curious travellers take a look inside: Tracy (Guyler) and Petra (Tananyan). What they find in the halls and basement cannot be unseen! Grey Ladder is the production house behind.

It’s something of an understatement to say that the work of poet and short story writer Edgar Allan Poe has had a lasting effect on the horror genre. Especially when it comes to horror cinema in particular. It’s not so long ago that we had the likes of P.O.E.: Poetry of Eerie and it’s sequel Project of Evil, David DeCoteaus’s The Pit and the Pendulum, and the animated anthology Extraordinary Tales; and now comes Tales of Poe – which adapts Poe’s short stories The Tell Tale Heart, Cask of Amontillado and Dreams.

Anthologies have made something of a comeback in recent years, at least in the horror genre, with films likes of V/H/S and its sequels, the low-budget Theatre of the Deranged and P.O.E.franchises, or films like The Theatre Bizarre and Trick r Treat, which both played at Frightfest events in the past, finding fans acros the globe. From director Dustin Wayde Mills (Skinless, Easter Casket, Applecart) comes Her Name Was Torment II: Agony, the sequel to last years runaway underground horror hit.
After a successful crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo – of which I was one of the backers – which blew through it’s goal to raise 178% of its intended target, Mills has completed filming of his new Crumpleshack Films feature, with an intended Summer 2015 release date.
Once again starring a wealth of Mills’ regular cohorts: Dave Parker, Haley Madison, Erin R. Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

One of the oddest tales this writer has ever reported on involves 1996’s box-office bomb The Island of Dr. Moreau, the third big-screen adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel about a scientist who tries to turn animals into people. The movie was a passion project of director Richard Stanley who had made a splash with his debut movie, the sci-fi action film Hardware, and who assembled a remarkable cast for his Moreau, which included Val Kilmer, Marlon Brando, David Thewlis, Fairuza Balk, and Ron Perlman. After just a few days of principal photography, he was fired from the film and ultimately...

The Penny Dreadful Picture Show isnt perfect by any stretch. Its got its problems and a couple are easily detectable. However if ever there was an inspired indie anthology its this one. In terms of pure entertainment value its right up there with recent successes All Hallows Eve Little Deaths VHS and The Theatre Bizarre. Im glad I got the chance to check it out and Ill say this sometimes its good to have friends in high places. A few weeks ago I hadnt heard peep one about a screener for The Penny Dreadful Picture Show being released (by the way the DVD has supposedly been released though I havent been able to track it down).

After movies like V/H/S and The ABCs of Death, I’m all for horror anthologies abiding by a particular theme. There’s something inherently fun about such a cornucopia of treats, as different directors populate one single film with so many distinctive styles and traits – as long as the segments set the stage for such fun. I’ll always give a horror anthology a try, from Chillerama to The Theatre Bizarre, which is why I’m happy to say we’ve got an exciting anthology coming our way with Fear Paris.
Newly announced, Fear Paris will join the likes of Joe Dante (Gremlins), Xavier Gens (Hitman/Frontier(s)), and Timo Vuorensola (Iron Sky), as they explore the horrific underworld of France’s iconic capital city. Here’s the full press release, accompanied by a tonal teaser below:

Dept. of Monsterology: ”Officially, it’s the Department of Cryptozoology, Mythological Studies, Parapsychology and Fortean Phenomena. But to the rest of the students and staff at the Dunsany College, baffled by the cloak of secrecy that surrounds the Department and its affairs, it has another, more dismissive, name: The Department of Monsterology. Their brief: to investigate the dark and unexplored corners of our world – the places we’ve forgotten, lost or believe to be mythical. And to study those things that may still be lurking there.

The anthology horror film is back in the wake of the success of chapter-style horror films like The Theatre Bizarre (2011) and its announced follow-up, V/H/S (2012), the soon-to-be-released sequel V/H/S 2 (2013) and The ABC’s of Death (2012).
While this movement generates a good deal of conversation about the fondly remembered Amicus productions of the 1960’s and 1970’s like Dr. Terror’s House Of Horrors (Freddie Francis, 1965), Torture Garden (Freddie Francis, 1967), The House That Dripped Blood (Peter Duffell, 1971) and Asylum (Roy Ward Baker, 1972) among others, the comparison is not exactly accurate across the board.
While the segments of V/H/S are unified by shared visual style and a wraparound story, The Theatre Bizarre and The ABC’s of Death come off as collections of essentially unrelated horror short films loosely bound by a flimsy wraparound segment in the case of The Theatre Bizarre or a basic concept as...

Severin Films is throwing a house party! The company revealed cover art and details for two upcoming DVD/Blu-ray bundles that should have fans of cult '70s horror and the UK's notorious “Video Nasties” pretty stoked: The controversial House on Straw Hill and occult whodunit The House of Seven Corpses. House on Straw Hill (originally titled Exposé) made the headlines following its release by landing on the UK's notorious “Video Nasties” list, joining dozens of other films banned by British censors for their extreme content. While it does have some gory moments, it's been heavily cut mostly due to explicit sex scenes between stars Udo Kier (a horror icon who's starred in Mark of the Devil and Andy Warhol's Dracula and recently Severin's own horror anthology The Theatre Bizarre), Linda Hayden (Blood on Satan's Claw) and '70s UK sex bomb Fiona Richmond. Severin recently obtained the only known...

Antibodies (2005, Germany)
Directed by Christian Alvart
Runtime 127 minutes
German with English subtitles
Written and directed by Christian Alvart (Pandorum {2009}), Antibodies (Antikorper) is a disturbing psychological crime thriller about serial pedophile/child killer Gabriel Engel (Andre Hennicke), who has finally been caught by Federal Agent Seiler (Heinz Hoenig). Seiler is now charged with interrogating Engel, who refuses to talk.
In the small farming village of Herzbach, farmer and part-time police officer Michael Martens (Wotan Wilke Mohring) is wrestling with the unsolved brutal murder of twelve-year-old Lucy. Martens and the rest of the town think Engel was responsible, but there is plenty of tension and doubt to go around. When Engel is captured, Martens goes to the city in the hopes of finding out if he killed Lucy or not. Seiler grants the interview and is surprised to discover that Engel will only talk to Martens.

The anthology horror film – a fun way to jam-pack as many ideas as possible into one feature film, bringing in a number of directors to inject their own cinematic styles in a grand spectacle of varietal bliss – or so that’s the idea. Although not as popular in today’s horror scene, these types of films do exist, but without proper execution they’ve mostly flown under the radar and been written off by most critics. Films like Chillerama, The Theatre Bizarre, George A. Romero Presents Deadtime Stories, and V/H/S tried their hardest to make the unique sub-genre relevant again, but only V/H/S has seen success over the last year, already spawning the sequel S-vhs. V/H/S was special though, challenging directors to film on alternate recording methods from iPhone cameras to VHS recorders, ultimately giving the whole package an even more unique edge. An anthology is fun,...

We just got word of a new horror anthology coming to you courtesy of Blood in the Snow Festival Director (and Planet Fury writer) Kelly Michael Stewart. It's called Tales From Hell and it sounds pretty cool in a retro sorta way.
Tales From Hell is told in the tradition of those awesome anthology flicks produced by Britain's Amicus Productions back in the '70s, a style that's been revived in more recent horror anthologies like V/H/S and The Theatre Bizarre.
Through his new Silver Shadows Production company, Stewart and his team have assembled four original horror tales into a feature film hosted by and starring Robert Nolan (Sick, Familiar) as a different character in all four segments.
Each story is directed by an up-and-coming Canadian horror filmmaker: Ryan M. Andrews (Sick), Navin Ramaswaran (Nara), Gabriel Carrer (In the House of Flies) and Chad Archibald (Neverlost). Also, Michael Jari Davidson...

Horror anthologies always sound like a great idea during ideological conception, but unfortunately either end up being super hits or miserable misses. On the positive end you have a variety of well thought out short stories in films like Trick ‘R Treat and Creepshow, while others like The Theatre Bizarre and Deadtime Stories jam-pack one or two truly entertaining entries in between a load of garbage that bogs the overall film down. Chillerama is a great example of such wasted potential, delivering three killer short horror films by some of my favorite current directors, but disheartens with a short so unfathomably unwatchable, you have no choice but to give the entire film a failing grade just on principle.
Then along came V/H/S, a unique little horror collaboration piece that brought together budding genre directors like Ti West, Joe Swanberg, and Adam Wingard – only to challenge them with a fun restraint.

Like most horror fans, I'm not always pro remake. There are some films that simply should not be remade. However, I am supportive of remaking a film if the creative team behind the reboot can bring something new to the table or improve upon what the original film did, in some way. Case in point, Tobe Hooper improved on the source material in his 2004 remake of The Toolbox Murders. Hooper's remake was a more cohesive film than the original and was more effective at keeping its viewer engaged throughout the film. The original was poorly paced with the entire middle of the film being exhaustively sluggish. As for bringing something new to the table, James Gunn and Zak Snyder didn't outdo the original Dawn of the Dead with their 2004 reimagining, but that's not what the duo was trying for. Instead, they provided a highly enjoyable companion piece with their reboot...

There are also four seasons of The Twilight Zone available, which we always recommend to horror fans that don’t own the entire series already. Cheers, my dark and demented kiddies… Looks like we’ve survived another apocalyptic year in no small thanks to a fresh batch of impressively morbid goodies, many of which would have collectively stained your silver screens black and red if theaters could even find the testicular fortitude to show them!
Although most film critics don’t have the balls required to plumb these newfound depths of depravity, those with enough courage will emerge on the other side (albeit after many hot and soapy baths), triumphantly hearkening 2012 as a banner year for the horror genre. While other media publications swamp you with pretentious, so-called “best of 2012″ lists destined to put you into a permanent slumber, your loyal media daemon and macabre sin eater has collected the delectably worst offenders spawned by the film industry’s – very alive and kicking – bastard children.

Brad Miska, who runs bloody-disgusting.com, sees his fair share of horror successes and failures. It’s pretty safe to say that he knows what works and what doesn’t within the genre. So when he came up with the idea to combine the over-used but still viable found footage concept with an anthology film – which is enjoying a mini-renaissance of its own in horror, with films like The Theatre Bizarre and The ABCs of Death – and offer it up to a group of young, promising genre filmmakers that he’s been championing on his site, you can bet that people took notice of it. And when the resulting film, V/H/S, played at last year’s Sundance Festival, it floored everyone and was promptly acquired by Magnolia Pictures’ genre arm, Magnet Releasing, for a small theatrical run followed by a heavily-promoted VOD and home video release. The question that needs answering,...

The “omnibus” horror film – a feature length collection of cinematic horror stories – is one of the most beloved and respected horror movie genres for many reasons; but most importantly, horror is often very effective in concentrated doses (just check out our excellent short film collection for some great examples), especially with a storyline that's designed to set up one good shock or twist, saving the writer the effort of milking more scares out of a single tale. The field is overflowing with some landmark films, including the timeless 1945 classic Dead of Night (still creepy and funny after all these years); Roger Corman's Poe collection Tales of Terror; a ton of cool flicks like From Beyond the Grave from UK studio Amicus; EC Comics-inspired films like the original Tales from the Crypt (actually another Amicus film) and George Romero's Creepshow; made-for-tv faves like Trilogy of Terror; and stylish international...

Although he's best known for his gory, groundbreaking special effects works on a variety of films, Tom Savini has also made a name for himself in the acting community. We credit his screen career to that menacing stare and intense facial hair. He's also had experience behind the camera as director on 1990's Night of the Living Dead and most recently in a segment for last year's The Theatre Bizarre. Now, Fangoria is reporting that Savini will direct a remake of the 1972 zombie flick, Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things. Fangoria has just announced that they have teamed up with Anchor Bay Films for a remake of Children Shouldn’t Play With Dead Things, with Tom Savini directing:
