I was a bit curious about this 60-minute movie, which came out during the holidays in 2010. It's a television production as almost all the other Grimm movies are as well and you should not mistake it for the Leni Riefenstahl movie. The story is entirely different. I mostly watched it as I was not familiar with the fairytale, but now I can see why hardly anybody associates the Brothers Grimm right away with "The Blue Light". The story just is not particularly interesting.

The director is Carsten Fiebeler and he has worked on quite a few movies already, most of the directed at young (adult) audiences. The writer duo Kömmerling/Brinx have worked together on several fairytale adaptations before already. Christian Tramitz and Veronica Ferres are the most known cast members here. I don't see much talent in Ferres, but the makeup artists did a solid job. She was unrecognizable at times playing a wicked witch. Tramitz, I actually like, but somehow he was underwhelming here as well and I never really saw much in his character. Maybe the most interesting thing is that it is not the witch who is the real antagonist here, but it is the King, the princess' father who plans to force her into an unhappy marriage and execute her true love. Of course, neither is happening as fairy tales have happy endings and so does this one. I was a but surprised though, how they quickly got the king to the witch in the end and none of the King's army would keep them from doing so.

Anyway, all in all, I cannot recommend this film. I tend to think, it's not really bad execution from the cast and crew here, but the material just is not truly interesting enough. Admittedly, cast and crew never wowed me either. Not recommended.
