Tribeca Film Festival organizers on Wednesday announced 46 of the 89 feature films screening at the New York-set festival starting next month, including selections in the World Narrative and Documentary Competition film sections, as well as out-of-competition Viewpoints screenings.
"Big Men," a documentary about American corporations pursuing oil reserves in Africa, will serve as the opening night film for the World Documentary portion; "Bluebird," a small-town drama featuring "Girls" star Adam Driver, will kick-off the World Narrative slate. "Flex Is Kings," a documentary about Brooklyn street performers, is the Viewpoints opener. All three films premiere on April 18. One of the highlights of my year has definitely been Sundance London, the first time Robert Redford’s film festival ever took its name outside of the Us, and brought it to our shores here in the UK.
For a weekend in April, we got the chance to see just over a dozen feature films that had debuted in January at Sundance in the Us, including the likes of Ry Russo-Young’s Nobody Walks, Josh Radnor’s Liberal Arts, and one of my personal favourite films of the year, Colin Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed.
In the intervening months, we’ve been awaiting confirmation on the festival’s fate for next year, and now Sundance have officially announced that Sundance London will not only be returning to the capital in 2013, but in 2014 as well.

29th April saw the last day of the Sundance London Film and Music festival, which took place at the O2 Arena.
Sundance London was a highly-anticipated event. As the first Sundance festival to be hosted outside of its home in Utah, it was exciting to discover an event that was so successful in the Us was going to have its own UK counterpart.
For a first-time festival, it was a huge gamble – the last time a film-based event took place at the O2 (Empire Big Screen in August 2011), there were some issues with crowd control and general disinterest amongst film fans and O2 visitors. There were misgivings on how British filmgoers would take to the festival, seeing as independent cinema is at risk due to lack of Government funding and support. But my personal general impression of the festival is positive.
The film programme was diverse and generated a lot of interest.

Veteran Hollywood star hails the Prince of Wales as 'incredible' at opening night in London
He received a ringing endorsement from Robert Redford that would swell the heads of most film-makers, but showcasing his new documentary last night the Prince of Wales merely hoped audiences "would stay awake for most of it".
The film, Harmony: A New Way of Looking At Our World, was being given its premiere at the opening night of Sundance London, the first non-us outing for Redford's successful film and music festival.
The prince said he was "enormously touched and honoured", not just because Redford had earlier hailed him as "incredible" and invited him to screen Harmony, but because he had brought Sundance to the UK capital. "I think we owe him a huge debt of gratitude for that," he said.
Harmony, narrated by and starring the prince, tells how he has worked with environmental campaigners,...

In London to launch UK version of the event, actor/director accuses prime minister of having 'narrow view' of the industry
Robert Redford, the godfather of Us independent film-making, was never likely to agree with David Cameron's assessment that the British film industry should concentrate on commercially viable films. Redford, in London to promote the first UK version of his cutting-edge Sundance film festival, practically growls out what he thinks of the Pm's ideas. "That may be why he's in trouble. That's a very narrow view. I don't want to say it speaks of the man, but that doesn't speak to the broad category of film-makers and artists."
A well-preserved 75-year-old, Redford is still very much the frontman for the festival that takes place in Park City, Utah, every January, as well as leading its parent organisation, the Sundance Institute, which organises film-makers' "laboratories" across the world. His presence is...

The 1990s were Doctor Who's very own Decadus Horriblus (thanks to the Basil Brush Book of Latin for this). Up until 1990, Doctor Who had carved itself a niche in the BBC schedules, usually to worldwide applause, high ratings and positive critical feedback.
And then it all went horribly wrong.
By the mid-1980s, Doctor Who was starting to get out of its depth as a result of a misunderstood Doctor, over-complicated plots and a dash of violence. Cue an extended holiday; but on its return, its reputation was still in tatters. Despite a bold attempt to re-invent itself as a confident, clever show of mystery, the BBC bosses weren't impressed. And so the axe fell, leaving the faithful mob of Doctor Who fans to wait and wonder.
But don't forget – TV programming had radically changed in the 1990s in a number of ways. For one thing, there was an...
