"The Sing-Off" will return for its Season 4 on NBC with a new judge: singer-songwriter Jewel will join the three-person judging panel. The singing competition will return to its original format for the upcoming season, airing as a holiday special later in 2013.
Jewel takes the place of Season 3 judge Sarah Bareilles (who in turn replaced Nicole Scherzinger) and will sit alongside returning artists Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman. Host Nick Lachey is also returning to the program.
"There are very few musical artists as accomplished and talented as Jewel," said NBC president for alternative and late-night programming Paul Telegdy. "Her addition to 'The Sing-Off' judges panel, along with our stellar team of Shawn Stockman and Ben Folds, raises the showmanship of the series up another notch. The musical credentials of Nick Lachey are extraordinary, and his continued contributions to the show as host remain a huge asset."

NBC decided in March to bring back its a cappella contest show The Sing-Off, and now the network has announced that Jewel will be replacing judge Sara Bareillis. She'll join returning judges Ben Folds and Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman, and host Nick Lachey will also be back. Musically, Jewel is qualified to judge a televised singing show. But she hosted and judged Bravo's total dud Platinum Hit in 2011, and she was borderline catatonic and not at all insightful. Kick it up a notch, Jewel! The best part of The Sing-Off is its judging panel.

Another "American Idol" offspring is on the way, as former judge Kara DioGuardi confirmed to People magazine on Wednesday that she'll finally have a little one of her own.
DioGuardi and husband Mike McCuddy will have a baby via gestational surrogate, meaning the child's genetics will be made up of both DioGuardi's egg and McCuddy's sperm. The couple has struggled with fertility issues since their marriage in 2009. They endured multiple failed in vitro fertilization attempts and have since explored alternative ways to have a child.
Their efforts will pay off in the weeks to come, when their son Greyson James Carroll McCuddy is born.
"We made a personal decision to try with a surrogate," DioGuardi told People. "I asked someone we knew, a friend. And on the first try, it worked.”
DioGuardi called her surrogate a "gem," saying she has given her and McCuddy "this incredible gift."

Whether or not you’re happy with the outcome of this week’s American Idol Top 7 results show, I think we can all agree on one thing: The sight of Phillip Phillips with Colton Dixon’s head in his lap, gingerly stroking his rival’s magnificent coiff as they delivered the line “Why so serious?” in a group rendition of Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” was the stuff of Idol legend.
Actually, maybe we can agree on two things? Because, to paraphrase Randy Jackson, blah blah blah, blah blah blah, blah blah blah, America got it wrong with the Bottom 3 this week,...

Reality TV judging: It’s important. I can only commit to a TV talent show if I believe there are tough, fair-minded judges keeping the circus under control. Since we’re headlong into enticing seasons of The Voice and American Idol, the time is right to reflect upon the best judges in reality TV history – the ones who boast authority, smarts, sass, and fearsomeness. Oh, and some evil too!

Plenty of former American Idol contestants have made their way to the Broadway stage after their time on the reality competition: Clay Aiken appeared in Spamalot, Constantine Maroulis earned a Tony nod and originated the role of Drew in Rock of Ages, and Frenchie Davis hit the big note of “Seasons of Love” in Rent, but now, for the first time, there’s a former AI judge currently performing on the Great White Way. No, no, it’s not Simon Cowell in The Phantom of the Opera. If only.

Kara tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively that sometimes she just needs a break from music, but she also offers up advice for Simon and other reality show judges!
Kara DioGuardi judged American Idol alongside Simon Cowell for seasons eight and nine, but when they parted ways, it didn’t mean the end of their relationship. Kara, who’s now the head judge of Bravo’s Platinum Hit, still makes time to support Simon on his new show, The X Factor. She tells HollywoodLife.com exclusively that she will be tuning in to watch the season premiere of The X Factor on Sept. 21, but doesn’t plan to watch the show “religiously” given her own hectic career.
“Oh yeah I mean sure [I will be watching],” Kara admits at the Reeve Foundation’s Night For A Cure event in NYC on Sept. 7. “[But] the thing with these shows is I live this every day. I work with Warner Brothers.

Jes Hudak's ride to the Top 2 of Platinum Hit was rocky, to say the least. Underrated by her peers (and flat-out antagonized by Nick), she exhibited the effects of her stress at one point in what looked like a meltdown at judging. Despite it all, she bounced back to become the show's first runner-up. Below, Hudak tells us why being an underdog was to her advantage, why she shared something as personal as her past assault on national television and how, regardless of what you may think, she's a "diehard optimist"...

Even in increasingly tolerant times, rare is a portrayal of a gay man on TV as well-rounded as Scotty Granger's was on Platinum Hit. The show's second runner-up openly presented exactly who he was inside (per the demands of a songwriting competition) without ever seeming like he was reducing himself to a stereotype or defining his entire existence by his sexuality. In fact, Scotty's sensitive, thorough portrayal may be the show's greatest contribution to pop culture (that is, until some of its talented contestants make good on their potential).
We talked to Scotty about the show's handling of his sexuality, why he uses the word "lifestyle" to describe it, how the show helped with his craft and why he was one of the only cast members to bond with Platinum Hit antagonist Nick...

Introduced as a normal, good girl falling for a fellow contestant, Jes Hudak rose to the Top Four as a seriously competitive songwriter on Bravo's newest competition show Platinum Hit. Quirky and sincere, she describes her experience on Platinum Hit as helping her hone her craft. Until he was eliminated on last week's Platinum Hit (Fridays, 8/7c, Bravo), Johnny Marnell seemed like the show's front-runner. Jackie Tohn is the latest eliminated contestant from Bravo's new reality songwriting competition show "Platinum Hit." The whiskey-voiced songstress took time out of the joyous activity of taking her parents to the iPhone store to speak with Zap2it about her experience on the show and what she's got planned moving forward.
"'Platinum Hit' was really cool. "Half of me as a musician has always been the writing, playing my own instrument. When I got on 'Platinum Hit,' it was so exciting because I could actually show what I am and what I can do."

Our tween selves think it’s kind of tragic that Jewel’s new baby has completely missed the years when his mom was a hugely famous singer-songwriter. Then again, he also missed the release of “Intuition,” so maybe it’s a blessing in disguise. People reports that the singer and handsome cowboy husband Ty Murray welcomed their son last night in Texas. The baby’s name is Kase Townes Murray, and considering his mom published a book of poetry and once lived in her car, we think he got away scot-free.
“Ty and I are so pleased to welcome our new baby boy into the world,” the host of Platinum Hit said. “We are overcome with happiness – it really is as great as everyone told us it would be – better even!” A pregnant Jewel was in a car accident back in March but received only minor injuries. Once again, the contestant sent packing on this week's Platinum Hit (Mondays, 10/9c, Bravo) was the one who had contributed the least. At least that's what we were led to believe: according to Melissa Rapp, it was simply her time to go, and she couldn't hang on because she didn't bring the strategy that reality TV calls for.
Below, she shares her naive involvement in the genre, and her surprise at the machinations that were taking place all around her (alleging that Nick's attitude is a pose and that Jes and Johnny's relationship is a fraud). While the narrative that goes "hindsight is 20/20" is common, especially for those chewed up and spit out by reality TV, Rapp articulates her experience particularly well, especially for someone who left a show about writing so early...

We ask 'Platinum Hit' judge about the less-than-stellar credits in her catalog.
By Jim Cantiello
Kara DioGuardi
Photo: MTV News
In her decade-plus career, Kara DioGuardi has helped write some of the biggest hits for artists like Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Cobra Starship, Carrie Underwood, the Pussycat Dolls and countless others. But when you're an in-demand pop songwriter and you're churning out tracks at a breakneck pace, they can't all be winners. Hell, even John Lennon and Paul McCartney published a few turkeys.
Lucky for fans, DioGuardi's sense of humor is just as strong as her sense of melody. When stopping by MTV News to promote her Bravo reality competition "Platinum Hit," the former "American Idol" judge was more than happy to dish about some of the crazier credits on her otherwise-sparkling résumé.
"No Boundaries"
Sample Lyric: "You can go higher, you can go deeper/ There are no boundaries above or beneath ya.

Kara DioGuardi took a lot of lumps from American Idol fans during her two-year stint as “the fourth judge.” Hell, anyone who keeps up with my Idol coverage knows I’ve employed far too many Kara DioSaster puns.
Things are different in KaraLand now, though. Last week, Kara stopped by MTV News and I had about a zillion things to ask her. But I also wanted to give her the chance to critique me. I’ve made mortgage payments thanks to her Idol gaffes,...

Scotty Granger
While only three episodes of Bravo’s songwriting competition Platinum Hit have aired, it’s probably safe to say that out contestant Scotty Granger has established himself as the show’s frontrunner. After all, he’s won two of the hook writing challenges and two of the final songwriting challenges, managing to win the approval of the show’s judges Jewel and the very hard to please Kara DioGuardi.
Granger describes his style of songwriting as a cross between R&B and pop, and cites Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Elton John as influences. And which singer would Granger most like to hear croon one of his songs? Celine Dion.
AfterElton.com recently caught up with Granger to discuss the ups and downs of being on a competitive reality show, which Platinum Hit host is Glinda the Good Witch (and which definitely isn’t!), as well as his...

Kara DioGuardi has been confirmed to join the cast of the Broadway revival of Chicago later this year. The Platinum Hit star will take on the role of murderess Roxie Hart for a limited eight-week engagement beginning in September, reports Playbill. DioGuardi's run at New York's Ambassador Theatre will last until October 30. The former American Idol judge released her memoir A Helluva Good Time (more)...

Kara DioGuardi credits "American Idol" with helping her come out of her shell, but there's nowhere she'd rather be than with her new reality series, "Platinum Hit." The Bravo show has DioGuardi, along with Jewel, mentoring songwriters through an "Idol"-like competition
So there's that. But DioGuardi also recently announced that she'll be taking over the role of Roxie Hart in the Broadway production of "Chicago" come September.
"This is so exciting," DioGuardi tells Zap2it. "For anyone who grew up in New York, it's always a dream to be on Broadway."
And she plans to seek advice from some of her previous collaboration partners, like Ashlee Simpson -- who herself played Hart twice, most recently on Broadway in 2009.
The former "Idol" judge (she sat behind the judges' table on seasons 8 and 9) credits the Fox competition show with helping her get over stage fright.

Did you think Kara DioGuardi was one funny honey on American Idol? Well, you’re in luck: The former judge and current Platinum Hit host will paint the town on the Great White Way in Chicago, a rep for the songwriter confirms. Starting on Sept. 5 for eight weeks, DioGuardi will play Roxie Hart, the merry murderess who enjoys a brush with fame after her arrest for her lover’s murder. (It’s the role played by Renée Zellweger in Rob Marshall’s big-screen version.)
Now, we’ve had a run-in with DioGuardi’s pipes a few times before — remember her...

Kara DioGuardi strolled into MTV News yesterday in a pair of black plastic flip flops. A weird choice of shoes? At first, I thought so. But after listening to her candidly (and hilariously) talk about her experiences and seeing how laid back and open she was, the shoes seemed a perfect fit.
I first got to know Kara when she judged American Idol in its eighth and ninth seasons. As a hardcore Idol fan, I must say, having a seemingly random woman walk on and upset the balance of Randy, Simon and Paula really pissed me off. But Kara won me over pretty quickly and I became an admirer.
Always looking hot, Kara proved to be a provider of some pretty good feedback (or at least better than her female counterpart Paula, who always seemed to be, um, a little out of it). But I still had...

Kara DioGuardi has confessed that she gets to show more of her true personality on her new Bravo reality series Platinum Hit. The former American Idol judge was announced as head judge of the talent competition earlier this year. The show assesses contestants on their songwriting rather than singing abilities. DioGuardi expressed her excitement for the new project to MTV News, saying that she feels more in her element than she ever did on Idol. She joked: "I'm way more myself. After nine hours of filming, you start to forget that you're on a TV show, and then the New York part of me really (more)...

Kara DioGuardi is well aware of what you think about her, thank you very much.
The former "American Idol" judge — who was already a major name in the songwriting community before she sat next to Simon, Randy, Paula and Ellen — can't go a day without viewers approaching her to speak their mind. "People actually apologize to me," the good-natured DioGuardi told MTV News on Wednesday morning (June 15). "They'll go, 'I didn't even know you were in the music business. We thought you were some random girl they pulled off of Hollywood Boulevard that looked like Paula Abdul.' "

This week’s episode of Platinum Hit was more grating than a raspberry seed in the tooth. For starters, I’m irked by the fact that the show’s contestants always work in teams, allowing (possibly) weaker songwriters to hide behind their (probably) more talented counterparts. (I mean, can anyone remember anything Amber has done thus far? Also: That chick’s name is Amber, yes?)
Secondly, after repeated listens, I cannot fathom what the judges liked about Team Jes’ “Home for Me,” which sounded like something that got buried under a Lilith Fair side stage back in 1998 (and should’ve been left unexhumed).

After writing about the road on this week's Platinum Hit (Sundays, 10/9c, Bravo), Nashville-based songwriter Karen Waldrup was told to hit it. She was blasted for her lyrics, although ironically the couplet that received the most flak — "I was put here for a reason / And I want the world to see it" — could be the battle cry for reality stars everywhere. Not that Waldrup would know. As she gears up for a tour of the South this summer and an industry showcase at Nashville's 12th & Porter, she tells us that before she was cast, she never watched a reality show. Also discussed: her hunger, her team and her letting go of the idea that her songs are her children...

So far, watching Bravo's songwriting competition Platinum Hit hasn't been easy on the ears — and judge Kara DioGuardi knows it.
Sure, viewers sit through season after season of God-awful warbling on DioGuardi's old show American Idol, but on Platinum Hit, contestants are not only shaky singers, they're all performing their own half-baked, unproven material. In the first episode, one hopeful, Sonyae, screamed her hook for an original song about Los Angeles — refrain: "Love It Or Hate It! Love It Or Hate It! Love It Or Hate It I Love Laaaaa!" -- and it was pretty much a train wreck until DioGuardi named it the challenge winner!

Here’s hoping American Idol judges Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez were tuning in for the sophomore outing of Platinum Hit, Bravo’s new reality competition for the songwriting set. Judges Kara DioGuardi, Jewel, Trevor Jerideau, and special guest Donna Summer provided the kind of succinct, specific feedback that was all too infrequent during Idol‘s recently concluded 10th season.
Monday night’s episode found the 11 remaining contestants writing hooks for a pre-recorded dance track; the winning three composers then chose teams from the remaining songwriters and hit the studio to create full tracks that were road-tested for a crowd of L.

Last night one of you lovely readers out there caught a proofreading mistake I'd made in the column and pointed it out. Now, it's not unusual that I make slight spelling or grammar mistakes so I want all of you to know that please, feel free to let me know if you catch one. You can mention it in the comments or email me because I'm terrible at proofreading things I've written and am happy to fix them if they're really irking you. Most of the time. I've found that some of my spelling mistakes end up making things more amusing for all of us so some of them I just leave alone even if I know they're there. So, with that said, here's your Monday night TV:
8:00pm: "The Bachelorette" on ABC
"Basketball Wives" on VH1
"Last Man Standing" on Lifetime. Original Telefilm.
"Mastercheif" on Fox. Second season premiere.

Platinum Hit, Bravo's newest reality show, debuted this week. This time producers are looking for the next great songwriter. They've chosen 12 upcoming composers, who will take the viewer on the journey to explore the creative process. The winner will get $100,000 in cash, a publishing deal with Sony and Bmi Songwriters The Writing Camp and a record deal with RCA/Jive. The rest will be sent home one by one. Based on the premiere we are making our predictions for the order of their elimination.
In the first hook challenge the contestants had 30 minutes to come up with a full chorus about the city of Los Angeles. Four of them were selected by judges Jewel and Kara Dioguardi as the best of the group. These four then got to select their teams from the remaining contestants, who would turn their hook into a fleshed out song.

The producers and judges of Platinum Hit clearly do not care about widows and orphans. How else to explain the craven ouster of Nevin James, a self-described “leader of men” and “great artist,” who had grand plans to spend the inaugural season of Bravo’s new competitive songwriting series at the intersection of Late Husband Lane and Motherless Child Blvd.?
In all seriousness, though, judges Kara DioGuardi and Jewel (along with guest panelists Jermaine Dupri and Jive’s Trevor Jerideau) probably made the right move in booting the contestant whose sole contribution to his team’s composition — the line “they want you to lose,...

Back before Bravo became the "go to" network for botoxed housewives, the channel was best known for being the home of quality competitive reality programming (well, at least a lot of the time). That, of course, included Project Runway, one of the premiere reality series on U. S. television, as well as Top Chef, the show that finally managed to unseat The Amazing Race as the reigning Emmy reality show champion.
While Bravo still seems intent on putting a Housewives franchise in every state in America, the network hasn't given up on the competitive reality genre, having just this week launched Platinum Hit, a competitive songwriting show featuring Jewel and Kara DioGuardi as judges.
So is Platinum Hit Bravo's next Work of Art, the surprisingly engaging show about artists that was a surprise hit last summer? Or is it more the awful Project Runway rip-off The Fashion Show? (For the purposes of this article,...

Jewel has explained why she decided to join brand new reality TV show Platinum Hit.
The Grammy Award nominated American singer-songwriter told The New York Post that she loves working with Bravo, because she loves how they approach different topics to other TV networks.
“I love Bravo’s shows – they take a topic you don’t know anything about or think you might not care about and make it so engrossing,” said Jewel.
Platinum Drive premièred in America last night and featured 12 singer-songwriters competing through innovative songwriting challenges that will test their creativity, patience and drive. Every episode will feature a different genre from a dance track to a love ballad, that require the contestants to write and perform lyrics from a multiple of genres, for a cash prize of $100,000, a publishing deal with songwriting collective The Writing Camp, and a recording deal with RCA/Jive label.

Bravo's "Platinum Hit" may seem like an odd concept to most people. How can the creative process of songwriting be subjected to the format of "Top Chef"? Host and successful singer/songwriter Jewel says it happens more than you may think.
"Every single one of those challenges is realistic," Jewel tells Zap2it. "That was a really big part of the show for me. I wanted to be involved with the authenticity of it. And also because I wanted to make sure these kids were prepared, even if they didn't make it to the finale, for what's going to be expected of them."
"You need to be able to come up with good quick," she adds. "You can't sit around like a baby and go, 'My muse isn't hitting me.' If you're an artist that has some kind of luxurious life, and you can afford to wait for your muse to hit you,...

Los Angeles, CA, United States (Ahn Entertainment) - Bravo was the first to put the spotlight on "Project Runway" and has made us tune in for every cut on "Top Chef." Now, the network really sings as it puts together 12 up-and-coming songwriters looking to score the next "Platinum Hit."
Super-illustrious songwriter Kara DioGuardi, best known for her two-season stint as judge on "American Idol" and less known as the lyricist behind major hits by Carrie Underwood, Christina Aguilera and Carrie Underwood, is getting back in the judge's seat, this time sans Simon and Randy.
DioGuardi, who also released her first book "A Helluva High Note: Surviving Life, Love, and American Idol," aims to give a voice to the songwriters who work tirelessly to write what's on the radio, often with little to no credit.
