Polish production house Platige Image has received a great deal of praise in these pages over the years, praise borne out this year by the Oscar nomination for Damian Nenow's stunning aerial dogfight short Paths Of Hate. Observers of the international animation world have long been waiting for Platige to make the step into features - their upcoming Hardkor 44 will be dominantly live action with a high degree of CGI augmentation - and it looks as though Nenow will be the first of the Platige stable to create an animated feature.Titled Another Day Of Life, Nenow's feature debut will be co-directed with Raúl de la Fuente and clearly Nenow plans to stay within the military themes he set for himself with Paths Of...

Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the Annie Awards nominations, but the International Animated Film Society decided to give its highest honor -- the Best Animated Feature award -- to Gore Verbinski's "Rango." Both films are from DreamWorks Animation and they still have to duke it out at the upcoming Oscars in the Best Animated Feature Film category.
Besides the Best Animated trophy, "Rango" also collected awards for Best Editing and Writing. But Nelson, the first woman to direct a feature film animation from a major Hollywood production company, won the Directing in a Feature Production award! Yay! The German Short Film. Nick Ryan‘s The German (2008) short film stars Toby Kebbell, Christian Brassington, Glenn Mullins, Gary Murphy, and David Ryan. The German‘s plot synopsis: “November 1940, during the greatest conflict man has ever known, an epic duel unfolds between two ace pilots, each willing to take the match to it’s ultimate conclusion. Unknown to the pilots is a fate neither has considered.”
This short film immediately reminded me of the Paths of Hate (2010) short film. Since The German came out before that short film, perhaps it inspired it. Paths of Hate is far better though in my opinion, but The German has a better ending.
The German is a testament to the level of work being done in the short film format these days.
Watch The German short film below and leave your thoughts on it in the comments section. For more short films, visit our Short Film Page.

I'm a huge fan of animation, animated films are getting better and better. Not only is the look and animation getting ridiculously awesome, but I find that many of these animated films actually have incredibly good stories. Not all of them are good though, for example, Cars 2 and Rio sucked. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the awards this year. Out of the movies on the list that I've seen and liked we have Puss in Boots, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2. I guess it's no surprises that Kung Fu Panda 2 is leading the nominations with 9. Check out the list and let us know what your favorite animated movies of the year are!

Taking all of the information I compiled for the long list of 45 films I have listed the ten in contention for the Oscar with videos and additional information directly below The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee viewed all the eligible entries for the preliminary round of voting in screenings held in New York and Los Angeles. Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will now select three to five nominees from among the ten titles on the shortlist. Last year I previewed all 33 of the Oscar qualifying animated shorts that were up for consideration for the Academy Awards and this year I have 12 additional shorts to consider and I have found either the full short, a clip, a trailer or an image from all but two of the contending shorts and put them together in this one article. These shorts have all been screened for members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who will soon vote on the ultimate short list that will be in contention for an Oscar nomination. Last year ten films made the list. Take a look over the next eight pages and see which ones stand out to you. There are a few instances where you may have to click a link to watch a clip and, in one instance, to watch the entire film.

Paths of Hate Short Film. Damian Nenow‘s Paths of Hate (2010) short film’s plot synopsis: “A grey clouded sky is the setting for an ultimate combat. Two planes cut through the winter air, fly in breathtaking high-speed, reckless maneuvers above the snow- covered mountains and icy lakes. Two pilots, driven by blind fury, chase each other and thereby write cryptic messages of madness into the firmament. The eyes of the terrible rivals reflect unquestioning hate. They are ready to cross all limits of aggression. On their way into the abyss they transform into inhuman and distorted creatures, that finally become part of the history of hate.
The dimension of fighting is irrelevant, as well as the ideology behind it. It does not matter whether two people are involved or millions. What remains are only scars – bloody traces, paths of hate.”
This is an incredibly well-done animated short film. Extremely impressive.

One of the films generating a bit of buzz in animation circles that then exploded after screening at Siggraph 2011 is Damian Nenow's Paths of Hate. Produced at Poland's Platige Image, home to a number of world class animators including The Cathedral and The Kinematograph (trailer) director Tomek Baginski, the 10 minute short combines a comic book style aesthetic with a fantastic dogfight that rivals anything else I've seen over the last few years (including The Red Baron's breathtaking sequences).
