All for one and … two for all?
In a bold move, French film studio Pathé bet nearly $80 million on an all-star, double-barreled adaptation of “The Three Musketeers,” gambling that interest would be high enough that director Martin Bourboulon could split Alexandre Dumas’ swashbuckling epic over two films, spaced half a year apart, and audiences would show up for both halves. The gamble paid off, as the first part — “The Three Musketeers – Part One: D’Artagnan,” released last April — was a huge hit, and appetites remain strong for the sequel, which opens in France on Dec. 13.
In the States, however, where “Kill Bill,” “The Avengers” and “Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning” have paved the way for two-part blockbusters, that strategy seems less certain. A series of disappointing screen versions has tarnished the legend. It would be easy to eventize a double bill, marketed to fanboys and action-movie enthusiasts, in which all four...

Acclaimed director Wang Bing, this year’s guest of honor at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, will be using his IDFA platform to highlight nonfiction cinema of his native China.
The festival, which runs from Nov. 8-19, announced the 10 films Bing has selected to be screened at IDFA – one of the perquisites of being named guest of honor. Among the documentaries he’s choosing to highlight are Old Men (1999), directed by Lina Yang; Wheat Harvest (2008), directed by Tong Xu, and IDFA Bertha Fund-supported Last Train Home (2009) by Lixin Fan, “documenting the millions of migrant factory workers that travel home for Spring Festival each year.” (Scroll to see Bing’s full top 10 list).
Director Wang Bing attends the Cannes Film Festival May 19, 2023.
The documentaries chosen by Bing “and their politics are subtle in their film language,” IDFA noted in a release, “representing a wave of filmmaking rarely shown internationally.

It is pretty difficult to make an original series about the 1960s because everything that happened in that decade has been chronicled about a million times in TV, film, music and literature and if the producers of this show set out to be original they failed. However, though it featured cliched characters and familiar concepts White Heat was a nicely put together piece of drama that was worth watching.
Upstairs Downstairs actress Claire Foy is something of an alchemist given her amazing ability to turn otherwise drab affairs into top notch dramas. (e.g. The Night Watch). White Heat would have been halfway decent even without Foy so with her in it the show was actually better than average. Lee Ingleby was also very impressive as the salt-of-the-Earth Northern...

Great LezBritain is a fortnightly stroll through the very best of British lesbo-centric entertainment and culture. Plus there will be some jolly good interviews with the top ladies who are waving the flag for gay UK.
The recent adaptation of The Night Watch on BBC2 is the fourth of Sarah Waters five books to have made the transition from page to screen, while her fifth book, The Little Stranger, will be made into a feature film sometime soon.
Waters is now undoubtedly a literary powerhouse. Her books have been lifted from the gay section of bookshops into the laps of straight women who might possibly be called Felicity and work in an office accounts department. Her previous adaptations, most notably Tipping The Velvet and Fingersmith were mightily successful, earning high ratings and high DVD sales. So in short, Waters seems a sure thing. So, with all that said, why the...

BBC2′s The Night Watch was based on the novel of the same name by author Sarah Waters. The show like the book covered three time periods: 1941, 1944 and 1947. That is a lot to squeeze into one 90 minute long drama especially when you consider the fact that the story has four main characters each of whom have their own love troubles and problems to navigate.
Stylistically the show was a success. It seemed authentic, the soundtrack was pleasant but not invasive and the director managed to create a fairly intimate mood without resorting to lots of unflattering close ups. Three of the four main characters were gay which would not in of itself make a good drama were it set in modern times but during World War II,...

From The Night Watch and The Shadowline to the The Crimson Petal and the White – has BBC2's newly boosted drama budget been well spent?
A 90-minute adaptation of Sarah Waters's brilliant novel The Night Watch hits BBC2 screens tonight – the latest drama from a channel that 18 months ago received a budget boost of £10m each year for the next three years.
That cash, earmarked specifically for drama, prompted a "collective sigh of relief" from a drama production industry keen to make more of the brainy stuff, according to BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson. But what difference has it made for the viewer at home? Time to give Stephenson and his team a half-term report, and look at what's coming up.
The Night Watch, tonight's single drama, shows the channel on fine form. A skilful, faithful rendition of the book, which tells various stories of lesbian love during the Blitz,...

Anna Maxwell Martin is about to become the face of Sunday night TV. She tells Emine Saner what makes a meaty role
As a drama student, Anna Maxwell Martin used to go for walks along the Thames. "I would see the National theatre," she recalls, "and think, 'I'm going to be there one day.'" Two years later, in 2003, she was – playing Lyra in His Dark Materials, and bagging an Olivier nomination in the process.
Such single-mindedness seems at odds with the slight person sitting before me in a London bar, finishing her stories with great squeals. Like the one about her mother inviting all her friends round after Maxwell Martin won her first Bafta in 2006, for playing orphan Esther Summerson in the BBC's star-studded Bleak House; the guests were invited, she says, "just to look at it!" Other times, she's thoughtful, delivering considered answers with a faint Yorkshire accent.
