Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched Season 1, Episode 9 of Disney Plus’ “WandaVision.”
In the series finale of “WandaVision” — or, at least, “The Series Finale,” as the ninth episode of Marvel Studios’ first TV show was titled — we watched Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) finally come into her own as the Scarlet Witch, and come to terms with her grief over the death of Vision (Paul Bettany).
Well…kinda.
For one, as Vision and Wanda said as the Hex collapsed around them, they have said goodbye to each other before, so it stands to reason they will say hello again. For another, the “conditional” Vision (that Wanda created within the Hex) helped the “true,” ghostly Vision (that S.W.O.R.D. resurrected as a sentient weapon) to reclaim his memories. So Vision isn’t exactly dead after all.
“The Series Finale” certainly did bring the story...

Who needs good taste when you have plenty of enthusiasm? Fantastic new documentary Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films charts the rise and fall of two movie-obsessed Israeli cousins - Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus - after buying a financially troubled American film studio in 1979.
The duo subsequently churned out some of the most iconic movies of the 1980s... but not necessarily on the strength of their artistic merit. Buy 'em cheap and pile them high was the initial ethos that led to titles like Hospital Massacre, Enter the Ninja and a plethora of increasingly exploitational Death Wish films. Yet occasional gems and cult classics like Runaway Train and Lifeforce emerged too, plus there's the title of a breakdancing movie sequel that entered popular culture - Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo.
So many fascinating revelations emerge in the documentary surrounding the genesis, production and release of the films...

Teresa Wright: Later years (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon.") Teresa Wright and Robert Anderson were divorced in 1978. They would remain friends in the ensuing years.[1] Wright spent most of the last decade of her life in Connecticut, making only sporadic public appearances. In 1998, she could be seen with her grandson, film producer Jonah Smith, at New York's Yankee Stadium, where she threw the ceremonial first pitch.[2] Wright also became involved in the Greater New York chapter of the Als Association. (The Pride of the Yankees subject, Lou Gehrig, died of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 1941.) The week she turned 82 in October 2000, Wright attended the 20th anniversary celebration of Somewhere in Time, where she posed for pictures with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. In March 2003, she was a guest at the 75th Academy Awards, in the segment showcasing Oscar-winning actors of the past. Two years later,...

Writer’s Note: This is the second part of our 25th Anniversary retrospective for Nightbreed which celebrated its monumental birthday yesterday. You can check out part one Here.
Nightbreed may not have necessarily been a huge commercial and financial success upon its release in February 1990, but it was a hugely important film for many reasons. At a time when horror was mostly focused on sequels and slasher-centric types of stories, Clive Barker dared to not only make a film about monsters, but make a film about monsters who were also heroes, which was a remarkable feat in itself.
Something else Nightbreed is fondly remembered for by fans of Barker’s horror fantasy is the wonderfully visceral and intricate special effects work on the film by the aforementioned Bob Keen. Both Hugh Ross (“Narcisse”) and Simon Bamford (“Ohnaka”) recalled their two pivotal scenes that involved some of Keen’s effects magic-...

A review of the "Shameless" season premiere coming up just as soon as I run to the store for baby supplies... Last season was by far the darkest "Shameless" stretch to date, but it didn't start out that way. Remember, at this time a year ago, Fiona had her job at the cup company, and the Gallaghers had made it over the poverty line. In general, the warm weather months at the start of each season tend to be a time for wacky hijinks before the snow and the consequences pile up later in each season. So the fact that things are going relatively well for all the Gallaghers isn't automatically a sign that the show is stepping back from the drama and the tragedy that made last season so great; this is just summer in Chicago, when the living is (relatively) easy, and the diner bosses are in abundance.

Comic-Con International has released the schedule for Sunday July 27th. This is the last day of Comic-Con, and they will be closing it out with some big TV panels like Supernatural, Sons of Anarchy and The Strain. There's also a panel for the Batkid documentary that was made. I rarely stay for the whole convention on Sunday, but I think I actually might try to stick around this year and enjoy myself. You can go through the full schedule here, but you'll find some of the highlights listed below.
Supernatural Special Video Presentation and Q&A - Series stars Jared Padalecki (Friday the 13th [2009]), Jensen Ackles (My Bloody Valentine 3D), Misha Collins (Ringer), and Mark A. Sheppard (Battlestar Galactica), along with executive producer Jeremy Carver (U.S. version of Being Human), return to Hall H to answer questions from the audience about what's in store...

Here we are, at the top of the mountain. We’ve had plenty from every war imaginable, some supportive of war efforts, some not. But the more interesting war films really focus on the people; the internal struggles those men and women have about what they are doing. Whether made in America, Germany, the United Kingdom, or anywhere else, war is not just a battle between good and evil. It’s a life and death struggle between opposing sides that may not be that different. The movies at the top of this list may be subtle or straightforward, but each of them is a clear snapshot that lets audiences see what it means to fight, so they don’t have to.

A quarter-century ago, Kevin Costner hit a double-play, following up "Bull Durham" with "Field of Dreams" and becoming king of the sports movie. Twenty-five years later, as "Field of Dreams" marks its 25th anniversary (it was released on April 21, 1989), Costner is back with "Draft Day." The movie's about football, not baseball, and Costner's character plays in the executive suite, not on the field, but his mere presence still offers a reminder of great sports movies past.
And after all, isn't nostalgia a key element of sports movies? "Field of Dreams" makes this explicit -- we long for the sports heroes of our childhood, for a supposed long-gone golden age of our preferred sport, as a way of connecting with our past and bridging the generational divide that separates us as adults from our parents. Sports movies offer more than just the drama of winners and losers, or the journey from dream to achievement,...

Once upon a time, it may very well have been possible to see all of the great television that aired in North America in a calendar year. For most of us, that time is over. From the ever-growing list of networks supplying quality programming to the advent of digital content providers smuggling in new and previously-unavailable series from around the world, 2013 marked the year TV became a truly unwieldy beast – in the best way possible. Beyond the distribution aspect, great television became a more diverse concept than ever before, in ways reflected in our staff’s collective list. Our Top 25 finds room for series of all shapes and sizes, from popular network mainstays to canceled-but-beloved cable darlings and everything in between. The beauty of it all? It’ll likely be even more painful to whittle it down to just 25 next year.

The nominations are out for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards! I'm not surprised by what was nominated. I will say however, having just seen Saving Mr. Banks, I'm a little disappointed it didn't get more nominations. It was just such a phenomenal film. I'm happy that that Emma Thompson got nominated for Best Actress, but the movie deserved a Best Picture nomination, and if I had to swap out one of the movies it would be Captain Phillips, which Tom Hanks was also nominated for. Then, as much as I enjoyed the film Rush, I'm not sure it is Best Picture material either. It will be interesting to see who wins, but I'd put my money on Gravity or 12 Years a Slave. As for the TV aspect of the awards, Showtime's Homeland got completely snubbed!
Check out the full list of nominations below! Who do you want to see win?

Adèle Exarchopoulos (‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’) and Cate Blanchett (‘Blue Jasmine’): Best Actress tie two years in a row at Los Angeles Film Critics Awards (photo: Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos in ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’) (See previous post: "James Franco Tattoos, Gold Teeth: Lafca Winners." Another non-Hollywood Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s selection was Best Actress co-winner Adèle Exarchopoulos, cited for her performance as a young woman who falls in love with blue-haired Léa Seydoux in Abdellatif Kechiche’s controversial Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner Blue Is the Warmest Color. The lesbian romantic drama also took home the Lafca’s Best Foreign Language Film Award. There's always one day during the Sdcc when you just shake your head, laugh, and say, "This schedule is ridiculous." Saturday, July 20th, is shaping up to be that day this year.
Horror fans will have a lot of choices to make as the "Bates Motel" panel battles the one-two punch of Godzilla and Seventh Son. Later in the day you'll be faced with choosing to learn more about "True Blood," Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, or "Being Human." Right now 20th Century Fox's presentation that runs at the same time remains "To Be Announced," but once details are revealed, we'll provide an update.
Other panels vying for your attention throughout the day are "The Originals," "Grimm," I, Frankenstein teamed with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (that combination should make for some interesting audience reactions), a look at gameplay from Dead Rising 3 on the Xbox One, more games, comics,...

The following broke this morning over at the Facebook page for Beyond Fest, an event going down in Los Angeles this fall...
Beyond Fest is proud to announce its closing gala, From the Ruins of Midian: a Night with Clive Barker and Mark Miller featuring Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut.
Released in 1990 to an awaiting legion of fans, Clive Barker's Nightbreed was wrought with studio interference before it ever reached the screen. Originally written as a fantastical love story occupied by monsters, Nightbreed was hacked and packaged as slasher fare by the time it opened in theaters. The result was a film that disappointed audiences, but most importantly negated the epic grandeur of its creator.

#30: Cloud Atlas
Directed by Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski
Written by Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski
Cloud Atlas is essentially a patchwork of narratives thematically linked with minor coincidences and recurring symbolism. With six stories spanning several centuries, Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. As a parable of how we are all connected, each protagonist in Cloud Atlas wrestles with some form of oppression, based on either gender, age, race, sexual orientation, genetics and so on. In 1850, a young American lawyer sailing on a ship through the South Pacific is slowly being poisoned by a doctor who wants the treasure of gold he is hiding. In the 1930s, an inspiring composer follows his dreams while recounting his journey via love letters to his gay lover. A journalistic potboiler set...

The folks at Empire have the new poster for Park Chan-Wook's upcoming U.S. debut Stoker, starring Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode, and Dermot Mulroney. Beyond that, they have a sweet promo video to go along with the poster. Sounds crazy, right? No, it's totally cool, I assure you. Showing a nice batch of new clips from the film, the promo shows the making of the poster as artist's create the various pieces of it, while underscored with a...

One of these things is not like the others: Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Clint Eastwood and Mitt Romney all took the stage yesterday for the final night of the Republican National Convention in Tampa. It was billed as Romney’s prime-time introduction to America. Unfortunately for the Republicans, the buzziest moment wasn’t Romney’s big speech (or the genuinely moving video of his relationship with wife Ann). It was “surprise guest” Clint Eastwood, whose rambling, seemingly improvised remarks was easily the most memorable moment of the night. Speaking to an empty chair where an “invisible Obama” was sitting, Eastwood riffed on attorneys,...

It's hard to pull off a good supernatural thriller these days. Every possible angle has already been exploited hundreds of times. All you can hope for as a writer or director of this type of film is that your story is compelling and endearing enough to keep the audience's attention for 90 minutes to two hours. Filmmakers have to hope that the one or two "twist" or "surprise" endings they decide to utilize out of the five dozen already used will fit convincingly with the rest of the tale.
All that being said, Beyond has an uphill battle to fight from the very beginning. Add to the struggle the extremely unoriginal title of the film and you have something most consumers and renters will walk by without even giving a second glance. Although it isn't anything new, the movie does hold its own and delivers a little intrigue and entertainment.

When a movie’s packaging boldly advertises “From the Producer of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance and The Director of The Thirteenth Floor,” a movie from 1999 that most people won’t even recognize, it should seem pretty clear that you’re embarking on a movie that will be down the middle of the road at best. Beyond is exactly that, despite a stellar cast that includes Academy Award-Winner Jon Voight, the endearing Dermot Mulroney, and Teri Polo in the only role she’s immediately recognizable in outside of the Meet the Parents trilogy.
John Koski (Voight) is a detective in Anchorage, Alaska who happens to specialize in missing children; a convenient fact when his boss, the Chief of Police’s (Mulroney) niece up and disappears. What begins as a routine investigation is quickly railroaded by the Chief’s overzealous wife (Polo), who enlists the help of a tabloid psychic (Julian Morris...

Jolene will sneak up on you. What starts as a strange film, with hammy performances that seem to verge on parody, becomes a provocative and devastating viewing experience. With a career making turn for Jessica Chastain and a stunning supporting cast, the film is a modern epic, chronicling ten years in the early adult life of an orphan. To say the film delivers is an understatement and to say it’s anything less than a staggering achievement would be a bald-faced lie.
Based on the story by E.L. Doctorow, Dan Ireland’s picture follows Jolene (Chastain) through incredibly distinct chapters in her maturation. When the end credits roll, one feels they’ve seen a series of mini-movies, wholly separate from one another, instead of one continuous story. While this structure could ruin most projects, Jolene rises to the occasion with the strength of its central character and the clear precision of the storytelling.
