It’s that time of year again, when Europe and pop music collide in a riotous (and sometimes downright bonkers) display of color, rhythm and fun. This year, the Eurovision Song Contest is being held in Malmo, Sweden, after Swedish singer Loreen won the 2023 competition.
Ahead of the grand final on Saturday evening, the contest’s executive supervisor Martin Österdahl sat down with Variety to talk about how the show has been inspired by the Oscars, is one of the few platforms left that offers “overnight success” and hopes to be a “beacon of light” during times of geopolitical instability.
With this year being the fiftieth anniversary of Abba performing “Waterloo” at Eurovision – a moment that paved the way for the band to conquer the world – and the competition taking place in the band’s hometown of Sweden, there is a lot of anticipation building for some kind of Abba reunion.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the great franchise experiment of modern times. It is an expanding universe telling different stories in a large movie continuity, converging in crossover events like the comic books that inspire them, with dozens of characters across dozens of movies.
Before the MCU became the creatively bankrupt and commercially unviable husk it is today, it dominated the pop culture conversation. Today, it is easy to forget that a decade ago it was unthinkable for a movie about a talking raccoon and a giant tree to be a huge commercial hit, but somehow we got a whole trilogy starring them.
That success climaxed in "Avengers: Infinity War," an unprecedented cinematic crossover that brought dozens of heroes together in a single movie, and then (briefly) killed half of them. Though these deaths were meant to be arbitrary, a throw of the cosmic dice, there was a bit of...

The adoption of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in the U.K. is driven by teenagers and children, according to a new study from media regulator Ofcom.
“Gen Z driving early adoption,” it says in the summary of the latest version of its annual Ofcom Online Nation 2023 report, published just after midnight London time on Tuesday. Generation Z is defined as people “born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s.”
Especially the younger members of that group have been embracing AI. “Four in five (79 percent) online teenagers aged 13-17 now use Generative AI tools and services, with a significant minority of younger children aged 7-12 also adopting the technology (40 percent),” according to Ofcom. “Adult internet users aged 16 and above are, on average, comparatively more reluctant users of Generative AI (31 percent).”
Meanwhile, 69 percent of respondents said they have never used the technology. Of those, 24 percent “have no idea what it is,...

Snapchat is ringing in spooky season with help from a few big-name creators. The social app has launched a series called Phantom House, which features Snap stars Sofie Dossi, Tony Talks, and Ezee.
Within the Snapchat app, Phantom House will be distributed across multiple formats. According to Marketing Dive, Phantom House viewers will be able to experience the series on the Chat, Camera, Stories, and Spotlight tabs. As Sofie, Tony, and Ezee use Snap tools to solve puzzles and escape the titular haunted house, ordinary users will gain access to their own themed effects. Who’s doing it better — Kristen Welker or Jake Tapper?
The two journalists, one the new moderator of NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” the other the anchor of the weekday “The Lead” and a co-anchor of “State of the Union” at CNN, aren’t typically pitted against one another. But there they were on a recent Thursday afternoon around 4:30 p.m., duking it out for the future of their medium.
Welker was holding forth on “Meet the Press Now,” a show earmarked for streaming users on the broadband outlet NBC News Now. Tapper was anchoring his regular Thursday broadcast of “The Lead,” a program that is now also streamed to subscribers of Max, the main broadband hub of Warner Bros. Discovery. Both were grilling Republican congressmen about the recent ouster of former U.S. Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, and, while not necessarily realizing it, hoping to appeal...

Two streamers teamed on to put on an event that will benefit an at-risk environment. QTCinderella and Maya Higa served as the emcees for the Gala For Good, a charity auction that raised approximately $250,000 for rainforest conservation.
The Gala For Good went live on October 2. The guest list included several creators, who donned rainforest-inspired garb for the event. Each invitee also showed up with a specific auction item. Higa painted a lush scene, Qt stayed true to form with a cake-shaped decoration, Jarvis Johnson delivered a pair of boxing gloves, and Alinity auctioned off a used pair of booty shorts. Twitch also chipped in by donating a Golden Kappa emote.
The event’s viewers spent the next day bidding on the available items via chat messages. By the time all the sales were finalized, the Gala For Good had raised “around $250,000.” That sum was split evenly among five organizations: The Rainforest Foundation,...

Like other social media comapnies, Snap is cheering on its Hispanic and Latin communities during the ninth month of the year. To celebrate Latin Heritage Month, the social app has launched a Spotlight Challenge that will spread $10,000 among creators who shout out their favorite Hispanic-owned businesses.
The #HispanicOwnedBusiness Spotlight Challenge is hosted by Natalie Alzate, who is the face of the Natalie’s Outlet brand and the host of the podcast #Viral. Creators are encouraged to follow Natalie’s lead by tagging cherished local businesses and posting about them via Spotlight, Snapchat’s vertical video format.
This isn’t the first time Snap has issued a short-form Challenge as part of a heritage celebration. Black-owned businesses got their moment in the Spotlight during Black History Month. Snap has also tied its Spotlight Challenges into broader cultural moments like the holiday season and Halloween. Along the way, the app has fostered...

The 2000 film Ginger Snaps (watch it Here) is my all-time favorite werewolf movie. That was followed by a sequel – Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed – and a very unexpected prequel – Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning – and while I’m not as enamored with them as I am with the original movie, I do get some enjoyment out of watching them. The oddball prequel especially. If you’re a fan of Ginger Snaps trilogy as well and happen to have a Region B (or region free) Blu-ray player, you’ll be glad to hear that Second Sight Films is packaging all three movies together in a limited edition UK box set that’s going to be released on October 30th. Just in time for Halloween, which happens to be the setting of the first movie.
Copies of the Ginger Snaps trilogy Blu-ray box set can be pre-ordered directly from Second Sight Films.

San Francisco, July 6 (Ians) Gfycat, the Snap-owned Gif-hosting platform, has announced that it will be shutting down the service on September 1.
“The Gfycat service is being discontinued. Please save or delete your Gfycat content by visiting https://www.gfycat.com and logging in to your account. After September 1, 2023, all Gfycat content and data will be deleted from gfycat.com,” the company wrote on its website.
Users only have two months to save content before the company discontinues the service forever.
However, it’s unclear whether Snap intends to integrate Gfycat content into Snapchat or delete years’ worth of GIFs, reports TechCrunch.
“Snapchatters are still able to search for and use GIFs in their conversations with friends,” a Snapchat spokesperson was quoted as saying.
Gfycat was recently chastised after its Tls security certificate expired in May, rendering the platform inaccessible to most users for five days, the report said.

Since 2019, the company behind Snapchat has hosted a Snap Partner Summit to share its latest news and upcoming products. The 2023 edition of the Summit included a handful of exciting announcements. Snap Head of Talent Development Brooke Berry revealed that Snapchat creators with at least 50,000 followers and 25 million monthly views will now be eligible for the app’s Stories monetization program.
Last year, Snap began sharing revenue on midroll ads that appear in its Stories. After piloting that program alongside a select group of creators, the app is now expanding Stories monetization. Creators “may be eligible” to profit from their Stories so long as they meet the above criteria and share at least 10 of the disappearing posts each month. More details about those criteria are available through Snap’s Creator Hub.

Republican state Senator Steve Drazkowski claimed he has “yet to meet a person in Minnesota that is hungry” in a speech opposing a bill that would provide free breakfast and lunches to students in the state.
“Hunger is a relative term… I had a cereal bar for breakfast, I guess I’m hungry now,” Drazkowski said. “I didn’t see a definition of hunger in the bill… most reasonable people suggest hunger means you don’t have enough to eat in order to provide for metabolism and growth.”

When Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel opened his company’s earnings call with prepared remarks Feb. 28, a casual listener hearing him tout the UFC and WME might have missed the most interesting part: Emanuel wasn’t speaking at all.
Well, he sort of was. The words were his, and the voice was his, but rather than Emanuel speaking into a microphone (opening remarks on earnings calls are often pretaped), the comments were the product of a generative artificial intelligence firm called Speechify.
So why did Ari Emanuel (er, “AI Emanuel”?) use his company’s fourth-quarter earnings call to bring machine learning to its financial report? “We’re in business with them, we think they’re a really good company,” Emanuel said of Speechify (and yes, Endeavor disclosed in its earnings press release that the comments would be computer-generated), but he also noted that “we thought with all the conversation around AI...

San Francisco, March 2 (Ians) Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has announced that Snapchat+ subscribers will soon be able to freeze their Streaks.
“We’ll also be adding a new way for Snapchat+ subscribers to freeze their Streaks, putting things on pause when they know they’re going off the grid,” the company said in a blogpost on Wednesday.

“We’ll also be adding a new way for Snapchat+ subscribers to freeze their Streaks, putting things on pause when they know they’re going off the grid,” the company said in a blogpost on Wednesday.
“Since 2016, Snapchatters have celebrated the friendships they nurture daily with Snap Streaks with pals near and far,” the company said.
However, sometimes users just need a day to take a pause.
The company said that users can take a break with a new feature the platform is testing to “let you reignite the spark and restore one Streak for free with just one tap.”

San Francisco, March 2 (Ians) Microsoft-owned OpenAI has announced that it is now allowing third-party developers to integrate ChatGPT and Whisper into their apps and services with an application programming interface (Api).
With the introduction of ChatGPT and Whisper models to the Api, developers now have access to cutting-edge language and speech-to-text features, the company said in a blogpost.
“ChatGPT Api users can expect continuous model improvements and the option to choose dedicated capacity for deeper control over the models,” it added.
OpenAI also mentioned a few companies which are using the new APIs including Snap’s My AI feature, which was announced earlier this week.
For the ChatGPT Api, OpenAI is offering 1,000 tokens for $0.002 and said that is “10x cheaper than our existing Gpt-3.5 models.”
“Developers who use the gpt-3.5-turbo model will always get our recommended stable model, while still having the flexibility to opt for a specific model version,...

San Francisco, Feb 2 (Ians) Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has hinted at future Ar glasses powered by generative AI technology during its fourth-quarter earnings call on Tuesday.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel agreed that there were numerous opportunities to use generative AI to improve Snap’s camera in the near future, however, he stated that, in the future, AI will be critical to the growth of augmented reality, including Ar glasses, reports TechCrunch.
Moreover, Spiegel mentioned that the company was thinking about how to integrate AI tools into its existing Lens Studio technology for Ar developers.
“We saw a lot of success integrating Snap Ml tools into Lens Studio, and it’s really enabled creators to build some incredible things. We now have 3,00,000 creators who built more than 3 million lenses in Lens Studio,” Spiegel was quoted as saying.
“So, the democratisation of these tools, I think, will also be very powerful,...

YouTube is continuing its decade-long Super Bowl tradition. The platform has relaunched its AdBlitz platform, where it has collected commercials that will run on Fox’s Big Game broadcast on Sunday, February 12.
As of this post, eight ads from Super Bowl Lvii are available on AdBlitz. That number is sure to increase as we move closer to the game. Some of the ads already have millions of views, thanks to a combination of paid and organic traffic. Snapchat‘s Super Bowl spot, titled “Wait’ll You See This,” has already surpassed 3.4 million views on YouTube. Its title references Snap’s filters, which are featured in the ad.
AdBlitz is the central hub for an initiative that brings massive viewership to YouTube each February. Back in 2017, the video site reported that a collection of 20 popular Super Bowl ads had driven 440 million hours of watch time across the platform.

Snap Inc. recently announced a round of layoffs. The parent company of Snapchat is cutting back on products and programming, but it has a plan to continue supporting its user base.
With the discontinuation of Snap-funded Originals, creators who land on Snapchat’s primary hubs — such as its Discover page — will become the undisputed stars of the app. That’s good news for Eitan Bernath, a talented young chef with a strong social media following. Bernath exemplifies the modern Snapchat creator: He is spreading his content across multiple formats, from Discover shows to Stories to Spotlight, and those efforts are (literally) paying off.
Bernath’s success on Snapchat has allowed him to take his online video career to the next level. He currently runs a five-person business for which Snap is his “main source of revenue.”
So how’d he pull that off?
Bernath has been in the public...
