The 2023 Tony Awards just honored a fresh group of incredible talents. Trophies were handed out at the United Palace Theater in NYC on June 11. This year's big winners include "Killing Eve" star Jodie Comer for her role in "Prima Facie," the play "Leopoldstadt," and the musical "Kimberly Akimbo."
"Shucked" star Alex Newell and "Some Like It Hot" star J. Harrison Ghee also made history as they became the award show's first openly nonbinary acting winners. The Tony Awards do not have gender-neutral acting categories. Newell, an alum of "The Glee Project," took home the award for featured actor in a musical. Ghee also won in their category, best actor in a musical.
The annual theater award ceremony was hosted by Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, who is emceeing without a script amid the 2023 writers strike.

Here’s to some real-life New Directions! In one of the earliest awards handed out in the 76th Tony Awards telecast on CBS and Paramount+, history was made as Alex Newell became the first-ever openly non-binary actor to win a Tony award, in the Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical category, for their showstopping role as cornpone character Lulu in the musical comedy “Shucked.”
Then, in the show’s final hour, that record was upheld by nonbinary actor J. Harrison Ghee, who won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical in the Marc Shaiman/Scott Wittman tuner “Some Like it Hot”, based on Billy Wilder’s classic 1950s comedy. Ghee, late of musicals such as “Kinky Boots” and “Mrs. Doubtfire”, was a favorite for their bold reimagining of the Jerry/Daphne role made famous by Jack Lemmon in the original film.

For Alex Newell, making history is tiring work. Less than 12 hours after the Shucked actor walked the white carpet at the 2023 Met Gala became the first nonbinary actor to be nominated for a Tony in the Best Featured Actor in a Musical category. There were tears and press and still no sleep as the actor headed immediately back to her dressing room at New York’s Nederlander Theatre to prepare for Tuesday night’s show.

Ryan Murphy made headlines back in 2018 when the prolific producer of TV hits ranging from "Glee" to "American Horror Story" signed a massive content deal with Netflix, estimated at a record-breaking $300 million. Since then, Murphy and his collaborators have delivered a head-spinning array of projects for viewers of the streaming service, in addition to various shows for network television and the FX basic cable brand.
Known for audacious and outrageous plot twists, compelling characters, and assembling a repertory company comprised of some of Hollywood's finest actors, Murphy has managed to leave his imprint on everything he touches. Realistically speaking, Murphy has increasingly spread himself thin as he continues to pump out more and more television content within multiple genres. Though everything remains thoroughly on brand, not all of those projects achieve the same level of quality. Occasional stumbles are inevitable. With that in mind, read on for a roundup of...

It wasn’t all fun and games on Ryan Murphy’s “The Glee Project”, apparently.
To mark the 10th anniversary of the final episode of the reality show, that aired from 2011 to 2012, contestants have spoken out about their time on the series.
Insider interviewed multiple stars of the show, which was dedicated to finding “Glee”‘s next big star, with season 2 contestant Abraham Lim admitting: “There were so many great elements of the show, but it was also really anxiety-inducing and there was a lot of trauma. Trauma bonds were made.”
Executive producer Shauna Minoprio insisted it was all about who Murphy wanted to write a “Glee” character for.
“What’s interesting about the show is, this was about somebody’s creative vision,” Minoprio told the publication. “It wasn’t about who’s the best singer or dancer. It was about who Ryan Murphy was the most excited to write a character for.

There was a time when “Glee” dominated pop culture, and as a result, a reality competition spinoff was briefly in the spotlight as well. But, according to some of the contestants on “The Glee Project,” that spinoff series actually fostered “a lot of trauma.”
In a new oral history with Insider, former winners and runners-up of “The Glee Project” — including Damian McGinty, Samuel Larsen and Lindsay Pearce — admitted that the reality show was pretty emotionally damaging at times, saying that the producers “manipulated” the young contestants into storylines they wanted to see on screen.
“It was abuse, whether they thought it was or wasn’t,” Pearce, who had a brief arc as Harmony “the Gerber baby” on the show, said. “They made a successful reality television show, but the cost was high for some of us.”
Pearce recalled two specific moments on the show, in which she was involved directly.

“The Love Boat” soon will be making another run, promising something for everyone — but this time as a reality dating series.
CBS and its sister Australian broadcaster Network 10 have both ordered local versions of “The Real Love Boat,” set to air in the U.S. and Australia later this year. The show is exactly what it sounds like: A reality dating competition show, but patterned after the hit 1970s hour-long comedy “The Love Boat.”
And just as Princess Cruises served as the backdrop to the scripted series, the cruise line’s ships will also serve as a setting for the new unscripted shows.
“The Love Boat” was produced by Aaron Spelling, whose company was later purchased by Viacom — eventually leading to the “Love Boat” IP being owned by CBS Studios. CBS and Network 10 are now Paramount Global brands.

Alex Newell is having a moment. It's been a decade since audiences were first introduced to the powerhouse performer as he competed on the first season of Oxygen's The Glee Project, seeking out a coveted guest-star arc on the Fox hit Glee. Since then, Alex has carved out an impressive career that's taken him into the recording studio, with an EP and a handful of stand-alone singles to his name, onto Broadway, with a role in the 2017 revival of Once on This Island, and back to TV, where he's currently co-starring on NBC's charming musical...

That’s exactly what the titular character in “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” did when she realized she could see and hear the innermost emotions of those around her coming to life through song and dance in the NBC musical comedy. And in many ways, that’s what the show itself did in its casting.

Levy had an extensive background in comedy, from Showtime’s “Shameless” to ABC’s “Suburgatory,” but had yet to truly stretch her musical muscles prior to this show. Anyone watching the Tony Awards from the official media room got a clear sign that history was apt to be made: For the first time in recent memory, the small stage where winners would be taken for brief Q&As had a wheelchair ramp.
That logistical addition to the room inside the 3 West Club across the street from Radio City Music Hall preceded Ali Stroker’s win for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her turn in Oklahoma. The victory by the Oklahoma star, who has been paralyzed since a car accident when she was 2 years old, was the first Tony to go to an actor in a wheelchair.
Stroker, 21, arrived and left the room to loud applause. The 31-year-old, who has also starred in TV’s The Glee Project and Ten Days in the Valley, recalled the reactions she has gotten from her performance and its impact.

Stroker, 21, arrived and left the room to loud applause. The 31-year-old, who has also starred in TV’s The Glee Project and Ten Days in the Valley, recalled the reactions she has gotten from her performance and its impact.

At Sunday's Tony Awards, Ali Stroker will stand out not only as the first-ever Tony-nominated performer who uses a wheelchair — she's up for best featured actress in a musical for her role as Ado Annie in the revival of Oklahoma — but also the first alum of Oxygen's two-season reality competition The Glee Project to be nominated for her stage work.
The series featured young, fresh-faced triple-threats competing for a recurring role on Glee — several of whom became series regulars on the Fox musical comedy.

Blake Jenner first rose to fame in 2012 when he won “The Glee Project” and therefore earned a role on “Glee” proper. In the years since, though, he graduated from teen heartthrob status to meatier, edgier roles in films such as “American Animals” and now the Netflix limited series “What/If,” in which he stars opposite Jane Levy and Renee Zellweger.
How conscious an effort have you had to make to avoid being pigeon-holed or seen only for high school projects?
“The Glee Project” was my absolute first in to the industry. I had done a few little things here and there but that was my first outing to a vast audience of performing every week and people getting to know you and your talent. If it weren’t for that I don’t think I would have had any of the opportunities I’ve been so lucky to encounter over the past few years.

What/If has found its male lead!
Glee grad, Blake Jenner has joined the cast of the series and will star alongside Renée Zellweger and Jane Levy.
The series focuses on the ripple effect of what happens when good people start doing things that are not good.
Jenner is attached to star as Sean.
The series comes from Revenge creator Mike Kelley, and it will take the form of an anthology series.
According to Deadline, the first season will center on two struggling newlyweds "who accept a powerful woman’s (Zellweger) ethically perilous proposition to secure a badly needed financial windfall."
Related: Tyler Hoechlin Joins Netflix Drama
What's more, all the actors have one-year deals, meaning it's likely that instead of playing new characters each season, it will be fresh cast.
Jenner shot to fame thanks to his appearance on The Glee Project, a reality series companion to the Fox comedy series.

The MTV Video Music Awards have announced more performers who will appear at the 35th annual event on Monday night, August 20, but you won’t have to wait until the show starts to see them. Backstreet Boys, Bazzi and Bryce Vine will all be performing during the pre-show live from the red carpet outside of Radio City Music Hall. The pre-show starts at 8:00pm, one hour before the main event at 9:00pm, and it will be hosted by actor Terrence J., TV personality Nessa, and “Jersey Shore” stars Paul Delvecchio and Vinny Guadagnino.
This is the 20th anniversary of the Backstreet Boys’ first Vma victory. The boy band claimed Best Group Video for “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” in 1998. Abraham Lim (The Glee Project) is set for a recurring role in a recasting on ABC’s new legal drama The Fix, from Marcia Clark, Mandeville TV and ABC Studios.
Co-written by Clark, The Fix centers on Maya Travis (Robin Tunney), an L.A. district attorney who suffers a devastating defeat when prosecuting an A-list actor for double murder. With her high-profile career derailed, she flees for a quieter life in Washington. Eight years later when this same celebrity is under suspicion for another murder, Maya is lured back to the Da’s office for another chance at justice.
Lim will play Ares, a smart, slick, high-end media consultant who is brought in by Ezra (Scott Cohen) to consult on the upcoming trial. He replaces Alysia Reiner, who was initially cast as the character Eres. The role went in another direction creatively and was recast, I hear.

Chicago – One of the coolest-cat young actors is Blake Jenner. The versatile performer began his career on TV’s “Glee,” portraying Ryder Lynn. Since that time, three short years ago, he has broken out in a big way, landing in the ensemble cast of “Everybody Wants Some!!” and “The Edge of Seventeen.” His latest is a combination documentary/narrative film, the unusual and absorbing “American Animals.”
“American Animals” tells the absolute true story of four college-age pals who decide it would be awesome to rob a nearby university of their rare book collection, including a John James Audubon first edition that is virtually priceless. Director Bart Layton began his career in documentaries, so he uniquely has the real perpetuators – 10 years after the event – telling their story doc-style, while cutting to the actors playing out the events. Join host and Awards Editor Jack Smart for a front row seat to the industry’s biggest awards races! Nobody can stop a show quite like Alex Newell, star of this season’s Broadway revival “Once on This Island.” The Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens musical, directed in a dazzlingly innovative production by Michael Arden, is the perfect showcase for what Newell does best: bring the house down with his powerhouse vocals. That voice is what started it all for Newell, who as a high schooler submitted a video audition for reality competition “The Glee Project,” a show dedicated to finding the next big star of Ryan Murphy’s Fox hit “Glee.” Newell ended up with both a recurring role as Wade “Unique” Adams, one of network television’s first trans female characters, and a recording contract.

About halfway through the Broadway revival of Once on This Island, the god Asaka takes center stage during “Mama Will Provide,” a bombastic number about aiding the story’s heroine, Ti Moune (Hailey Kilgore), a peasant girl who falls for a wealthy boy from the other side of their Antilles island nation, on her journey to find love. Played by Alex Newell, the actor and singer famous for playing the transgender student Unique on Glee, the flamboyant and vibrant god sashays her way around the sand-covered stage, filling the Circle in the Square Theatre with song.
It’s a show-stopping moment that brings audiences to their feet. Suddenly, the energy of the show is lifted by Newell’s rousing Broadway debut, a standout performance among acting and Broadway veterans (Lea Salonga, Greenleaf’s Merle Dandridge and Quentin Earl Darrington) who play the island’s other three gods.

We discussed earlier how the trailer's cloying feel seems disappointing. Now we have a poster to ogle. I'll be: It does not get better. Now, now: I have not seen this film. I don't know how successfully it will defy our expectations and present an accurate picture of the uprising. But I did have to check multiple sources to make sure this poster wasn't a fraud. Look at it. Look at those ragtag, smiling kids. Is this a poster for a critical Lgbt moment or Six Flags? It's time to rename this movie. Here are the best ten options. 1. Step Up 4... We know it’s hard to believe, but the last episode of Glee ~*eVeR*~ airs tonight. The New Directions have given us an incredible six years of singing, dancing, and awkward teen sexual tension, but it’s time for them to leave the show choir room for good. Admittedly, the most recent seasons of Glee haven’t been that great (this season especially, with its self-referencing jokes and out-of-control fat-shaming). However, we can’t let Ryan Murphy’s inability to craft a third act stop us from honoring Glee. When it was good, it was really fucking good. And, more importantly, it changed culture forever.
From putting gay teens on primetime to introducing us to living Ken doll/actual sex god Darren Criss, Glee wasn’t afraid to go where television had never been before. It broke racial, sexual, and gender boundaries — not to mention it brought the musical back in a big way.
