When they searched the patient's purse, a big deal was made that it was a violation of the Fourth amendment.

The issue is: the Fourth amendment does not apply to private property. Security officers in hospitals and stores often search bags.

The TSA routinely searches bags without a search warrant.

Retail store loss prevention people can insist on searching your purse or bag if they suspect something. It's not a violation of the Fourth amendment.

The fourth amendment protects you from search and seizure by the government.

Also the patient with the first time diverticulitis that ended up with a colostomy. And my family I know many people who have had 14 -16 bouts of diverticulitis: not one of them has needed a colostomy bag. They've even had surgery to have parts of their intestines removed.
