This film premiered in February 1955 at the Leichhardt Stadium in Sydney with an estimated five thousand waterside workers attending the opening.
Scenes of the depression of the 1930s were reconstructed with amateur actors.
The film's title was inspired by the name of a Waterside Workers' Federation of Australia pamphlet entitled 'The Hungry Mile'.
